Escape from Space by marrs

[raw]
made by marrs for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

This is a game about escaping a bunch or rotating loops as they try to destroy your ship. You get some shields per level, and your goal is to get the hell out into the safe zone. Hit SPACE to start. Use cursor left and right to rotate, up to accelerate, down to brake and even go into a slow reverse. Try to make it to the end and achieve that perfect score!

Really fun game. only problem i have with it is rings spawning inside of your collider as soon as you are about to escape.

I enjoyed this a lot! Some music would go along way tho.

Very fun game! Reminds me of Super Hexagon, but the circle version!
Very adapted to the theme, simple and well polished. I was surprised by the quality of particles rendering in the background!
The last levels contained cool gimmicks, the overall design is very good.
Hope you had fun making it too!

I definitely enjoyed making it, @curryrice and it does resemble that game a bit but I certainly did not intend to copy it. @hengen I guess my only excuse is I ran out of time in my first jam, and had to skip the sounds. I fully intend to take on all suggestions made here and do a "post LD upgrade" where I polish all the things I had to skip and add a ton more levels. In other words, keep the feedback coming!

This was fun to play! The length is good and the gameplay is pretty fun. Although it can be slightly annoying when rings spawn right in front of you.

Very challenging game! After retrying a few time until level 3 I though I got the hang of the controls and then the overlapping circles spawned, that was a bit more challenging!

Made it to lvl 8 and enjoyed the game! Gameplay is engaging and I like this abstract obstacles art style. Feels like it would be cool to have some immunity time after touching an obstacle, sometimes you just die too quickly after being stuck in one.

Thanks all for the feedback. @blue05 I agree I should either make sure when the rings spawn that you can't immediately collide with them. I'm considering spawning them from further out so they spawn from the "safe zone" and you will never have to fly out that far to make the level.

@rost this was my first jam, and my first ever game with the Godot engine, so I learned a lot. More levels and different ideas for how the rings are combined are on my radar and I will definitely do an update as mentioned before.

@kamuniaft I experimented a bit with moving the spacecraft more towards safety but had not found a good algorithm yet. I do agree with you that something needs to be done there so I'll give that some more thought.

Fun mechanic, the controls felt tight and satisfying. Of course, goes without saying that it would be cooler with some sound.

I think the zooming in based on speed is a cool idea, but it's a bit too fast so made me feel a bit dizzy.
I think there should be better feedback that bumping into barriers causes your shields to drop, some kind of animation or sound. I only realised it hurt me after I died the first time.

Still, its a fun arcadey mechanic, so I replayed quite a few times :) personal best is 3000.

There is a bug where you can get stuck on a barrier and die.

nice entry!

A really good take on the theme and a really fun game. At first I thought it might get boring when the first few levels only showed a difference of "here's more rings to go through" but you managed to take a simple mechanic and make it very interesting a bit later with all the layering and such.

My only real complaint is that it was possible to get basically get stuck when you run into a loop (which was mentioned before), but other than that, loved it.

The aesthetic is good, and the illusion of being stuck is well made, my only grip are the movements that could be a bit more dynamic, nice game overall

Some later levels are easier than previous, but still it was fun :)
Only complain I have is that sometimes rings are spawned just in front of ship, but others mentioned it before.
It will be nice to have soeme sound effect and music. I think sounds generated in Bfxr will fit to your game. I think such sounds may add a lot of "juiciness" to game with relatively small time spendings.
For your first jam game, realy nice job! :)

It was pretty fun to play, although there are some bugs, like others said. The graphics and the circle mechanics are great, and sound would have made the game a lot better (but I understand you may not have enough time). So overall, it's a very nice game!

Thanks @japes, @aflatthrasher, @tomycase, @vodzik and @theinkskeleton for your feedback. I basically agree with all of it. I sacrificed some things, like sound, to ensure the game played as good as I could make it in the available time. So I still have a few things to do after this round of evaluations ends. :)

cool idea, and well implemented. i do have to say that while the zoomimg in/out based in speed was cool i would have like that i could control it myself as i felt zoomed in i had more control

Interesting idea to give the player such control, @aterlamia I had not thought of that but that could add an interesting twist to the gameplay.
