Beelieve In Yourself by TheInkSkeleton

[raw]
made by TheInkSkeleton for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Will you be able to keep the last bee alive, in order to keep mankind alive?

SS2.png

In this short game, made for LD46, you are the last bee on Earth. Even though, you can't do much else, just do what a bee would normally do.

------Controls------

Up arrow to move forward, A-D(Left-Right arrow) to rotate.

SS1.png

-I'm not sure but I think there's a small chance that the arrow won't point to the flower, but instead will point opposite to the flower. In that case, fly opposite of where the arrow points. (If you're playing normal mode, and your score is 3, even if you think it's a bug, it probably isn't 😉 )

-I'm planning to update this game, at least to add a "Night Mode", and surely to fix bugs.

-It's my first time making music so please don't be too harsh.

I hope you enjoy it!

KNOWN ISSUES

-Text is cut off the screen.

-Movement is not really good (Speed, etc)

-Colliders are messed up.

Found flowey and took it to the hive. Loved the music!

The controls felt really weird. It takes an eternity to build up speed. Maybe you should set to velocity to a fixed amount instead of slowly increasing it over time.

The idea is good and it's kinda fun but the graphics are a bit too blurry which makes it hard to know what things are sometimes and the controls are a bit slow and feel laggy. I think with more clear graphics (doesn't need to be super high quality just less blurry) and faster/more responsive controls it would improve the game a lot.

Wow! Thank you all for your comments!
@lucidus Thank you so much! It was my first time making music, and I was scared it was terrible.
@jorbits I'm aware of that, but thank you for saying it. I'll try and see what I can do to fix it on the update.
@pandepic Thanks! I know about the graphics, they kinda worked with the placeholder art, but as I wasn't sure how to fix the curves, etc; I decided to make the walls and sidewalks only one sprite, and that's why it looks like that. As I said, i'll see what I can do with the controls.

Unfortunately in the browser version a lot of the text is cut off. I was able to rotate the bee left and right however forward did not work. It's a shame was looking forward to seeing more. More effort could have been placed in music composition or perhaps some kind of ambient forest/grass/bird sounds and the flute on top. But good effot for your first time and it sounds very cute and sunny! It does look cute, but the graphics are a bit blury. :) Keep it up.

Took a while to get comfortable with the controls, but once I did I started to enjoy it more. The music was very pleasant to listen to, shame the graphics weren't very good to match. One big thing I would add is better indication of when you're taking damage and what is causing you to take damage, as well as perhaps a slight improvement to change your momentum when you turn around to make it feel less floaty and give the player a little more control. Nice innovative idea though, and well done for getting something made in a weekend!

I first notice that the opening story is cut off of the screen. This is a simple GUI fix and techinically is allowed after submission, so I suggest fixing the canvas scaling. Also, it seemed the arrow keys worked but WASD only allowed rotating (@maja-saalamon give that a shot).

Music is good and relaxing. Graphics are good, but sometimes it's hard to find out what things are supposed to be.

Cute but challenging game. I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/Kfcxq_4FEeU

Music was quite nice. Bee was a bit hard to control. It stops pretty quickly instead of having some speed, acceleration and friction. Also the arrow directs you to the flower but not back to the hive you should go after collecting the flower. Required some time to get to know the effects of hitting different obstactles.

@marot Thanks for the feedback! I know that it doesn't point back to the hive. I tried to do it, and I spent like 3 hours trying, but at the end, I decided that if it worked directing just to the flowers, I'd trust your sense of orientation. I'm not so familiar with unity yet, sorry! (btw thanks about the feedback on the music!)

Esta bien la idea de la abeja, pero si me saco un poco cuando las manos no están con todo el pixel art, y seria genial si fuera mas rápida la abeja, esta entretenido cuando tomas la flor, buen trabajo.

I loved drifting with this so cute bee. The game is too easy, you just have to stop holding arrows to stop the bee... Music are really cool but graphics are not very coherent, it's weird to have just roads and people along who are clapping their hands... Anyways your game is good, well done (°u° 3 )> (<- this is a bee... I guess)

Nice game. I love how hard the controls are to master. The drifting is a really cool feature. Sometimes different images went behind each other. Overall, good entry. Nice job!

If this is how a bee sees the world I do not want to be a bee. As others mentioned the controls feel a bit weird and using W did not work for me. But I like the general Idea of the game.
However if you do use physics based movement try to make it either fully physics based or not at all. The complete stop you get when you release the key somehow made the game feel very slow, because accelerating also took long time.
I think that if you tweak the controls a bit this could be a really fun game though. The music is super nice too.

Well done!

I really liked the music - it created this relaxing, picnic atmosphere. I wish there was a bit more of it!

Bee movements felt strange to me. First, it felt very strange that you can turn with A D, but you cannot go straight with W. Why? Also, happened to me a lot that I was pressing up arrow, which should be making me go straight but was just making me spin around. Not sure why.

Addition of some slapping sound effect when the bee gets damaged by the hand would go a long way in providing player with feedback.

Overall, it is a good jam job and you should be indeed proud of finishing! Just slap some polish on top :)

@fabula-rasa Thanks for the feedback! Apparently I forgot to add the W key to move forward, but it's already fixed in the Post Jam version. I believe you were spinning around because you collided with something. The slapping effect is a really good idea! I had something like that planned, but it didn't quite work out, but doing it like that should be nice and easy. Thanks! (and btw thanks for the feedback on the music! That was the atmosphere I was going for 😊)

The Controlls feel a bit weird...
It's weird that the bee just stops when you stop pressing W.
A little bit of velocity would feel much better.

It was a bit too slow for my taste.
And sometimes it felt like the collision box is a bit to far away from the bee sprite

I quite like the music. Especially impressive as it is your first music. I thought the level was a bit too large. I would have enjoyed a smaller level more with a higher density of obstacles.
(A few technical notes: After holding forward for a while the bee doesn't turn anymore. The anchor of the bee is set a little to its right, making turning feel a bit weird.)
