Fruit Merchant by ditam

[raw]
made by ditam for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Buy and sell fruits amongst a small cluster of towns. Beware of spoilage - some handouts of bruised fruits might help you get started, but it can also destroy your profit margins if you carry around sensitive produce for too long or too far.

Interesting idea. I would implement some fluctuation of prices or random events to make it more dynamic. If not, it becomes tedious after a bit of playing.

Good looking graphics setting the mood, to an easy to grasp game mechanic. They UI Widgets works really well, are responsive and intuitive to use, which really makes interaction feel good. Adding some cost to travelling or similar would make planning your trips a little bit more of a puzzle, and having the names of the cities displayed (at least after having visited them) would help not having to take notes.

@dafral Thanks! Actually, there are random events fluctuating the prices (every time you travel medium to long distances), but balancing the frequency of them is tricky -- too seldom and it's boring, too often and it makes it impossible to plan your purchases.

Originally I wanted the prices to be even more dynamic than this (based on supply and demand), but there were only so many hours :)

Thanks for the praise @jlindell! There is a minor hidden cost to travelling: fruits spoil, and expensive fruits typically spoil at higher rates. The map has 3 "zones", denoted by the appearance of towns, which determines the distance travelled. As such, for example, it's almost impossible to transport grapes from Edgemoor to Ostmont without the cargo spoiling.

this game fits the theme the best so far, i like the music very much it makes a nice atmosphere, cool idea for the gameplay too bad that there is no real goal except of making a lot of money, was a cool moment when i found out grapes rotten faster then apples

Thanks @sillyman987, I'm glad to hear your love for it didn't change since yesterday :-p (Although I am a bit concerned by the shrinking number of !!!!s after it. Let's see how you feel a few days down the line!)

Good concept. Incorporated the theme well. The information that you give the player was an interesting choice, not too hard but with a small learning curve. I liked the shifting prices in the market.

Nice game, I like trading. Map is beautiful, but fruits are too hard for my eyes :)
