Hellion, The Legend of Jeff, is a building-based, hack and slash survival game, where we follow (shocker time) Jeff as he attempts to massacre his way to wealth. Aid Jeff as he cleans up his tiny piece of hell from errant humans and self righteous Angels. Using the souls he reaps, a variety of buildings are made available to help him speed up his clean up so he might actually make it to watching his favorite soap opera tonight.

fountain.gif

You can use souls to pave your way through lava, build turrets that reap soul for you even during potty breaks, pits that enlarge your storage of souls, spawners that poop out humans ripe for reaping and lures that confound these humans so much, they wouldn't see Jeff's scythe coming if it was covered in Christmas lights. Combine these buildings together, and well, it might just get as funny as Hell.

turrets.gif

Also, remember to not die. Those Angels might be pompous, but they pack quite a punch. Thankfully for Jeff, he's got the best insurance in hell, so he gets another life point for every 15 souls he gathers.

angels Fight.gif

So strap on your horns, sharpen your scythes and get down to business. We look forward to seeing how you use the buildings, so if you've thought of a particularly clever death trap that Jeff himself might cringe upon, post a gif of it at work accompanied by #JEFFGIF on our Twitter.

Atmospheric game! Interesting, unconventional setting and very fitting music! Game play is a bit on the easy side.
Remarks: It takes some time to gather the necessary resources to build the expensive towers. Also when I got the arrow turret the number of souls was often fractional (which could be a bit confusing).

@panayotis Thank you for playing :)
yes it does take a bit of time. Once you get a couple of towers and attractors the souls starts comming in much faster.
Also the turrets take a fraction of a soul every time they shoot.
Thanks for the feedback :)

Good game. Felt smooth and enjoyable. Only issue was it took a while to reap the necessary souls to start building things.

Great way to approach the theme. Loved the graphics, controlls were tight and it felt like things happened the way I expected them to happen. One thing that confused me is the way "healing" or "regeneration" works. Do I get life back with captured souls? 1 life per soul? Or 1 life per X souls? Or is it just regenerating. Knowing how this works would've been great. Still, I loved the little game. Just spent a good 30+ minutes playing and I can see myself playing more. Congrats!

Love the isaac's vibe from this game! mainly graphics and mood... the attack felt weird... maybe just because u had to spam it and the feedback was not satisfying... things like: sound when u hit/slash an enemy in half, particles of blood on floor, decal, screen-shake, knockback etc. same in other direction my only information when i lose hp is on UI. The idea of souls as money is cool but i would love to see upgrades to our character instead of towers, overall fun and simple : )

The turrets needs to be placed carefully for maximum effectivness. Ideally next to an attractor and gatherer.
Basically a gatherer spawns more humans, and they all move towards the attractor. Then place a bunch of turrets.

We plan on furthor developing the game and all of your feedback is much appreciated in creating a better experience! :)

Excellent game. Very fun and smooth controls. I absolutely loved the sound effects. I think the map could be a little smaller so that you can focus on building a base. Also, the seemingly random spawn points of angels was somewhat confusing as I did not know where to position and found myself running around a lot. Again, though, awesome game.

@karanveer @crazyhomeboys @hkspadez @kushimoto @paulsams thanks for your comments guys! Particle affects were next on the list of additions given more time, they'll definitely find themselves in there post jam! Thanks for the feedback.

The idea was to implement larger, more varied enemies where your towers and buildings would come in handy, so I guess that would make the game drift further into TD, but we'll keep the options open for post jam.

Map size might have decreased had we had more time to play test the game, we agreed! As for random spawn points, I suppose we didn't want player to fortify spawn points and not have to worry about angels anymore, but we'll keep it in mind!

Once again, thank you for the feedback and we're glad to liked it <3!

I liked the fast paced gameplay, controls feel tight.

I like the graphics, it reminded me of super meat boy, the effects on the soul wells were pretty great too, good work.
The music fits perfectly and it's also pretty catchy ^^

The idea is great though I felt like no matter what i do I kept losing about the same souls as I was getting, the "tax" on everything combined to being too high to reach satisfying revenues from automating stuff.
I'd really like the option to deconstruct stuff and maybe even floors to better plan traps etc, that could have been cool.

Overall it was fun to play, it feels pretty good. great job!
🎤 Mad Brokli
10. Oct 2019 · 13:09 UTC
@cyberstarlight thanks for your detailed feedback. We're very glad you enjoyed the game and even happier to have such in depth analysis on our in game economy. If you have a moment, could you tell us which buildings you have used? This is so we can gauge which combinations aren't really working well with regards to the revenue vs tax.

Deconstruction of both buildings and floors will definitely be included in any future release, as it's very clear that something like that make the experience better.

Once again, thanks for all the detailed feedback, and we hope you'll be back to review our Post Jam releases in the future :)
CyberStarLight

@mad-brokli
I felt that the crossbows miss too often, so the 0.25 cost would minimize a lot of their revenue, combine that with the 0.2 cost for a human spawner, you lose 0.45 even in the best case scenario, if the crossbow misses once (which happens often) that's 0.7 loss, then angels come in and they try to hit those instead, and miss..

I tried a spawner alone, too slow for any benefit, tried it with a crossbow near it but the crossbow still shooting at other stuff reduced that revenue, it exists but very slow.

I tried making a human attracting mushroom, surrounding it with three spawners and two crossbows, and it was still pretty slow.

I think the crossbows need to hit more often, spawners spawn more often, and taxes to be reduced a bit.
well I hope that helps, but that's just my impression so take it with a grain of salt.
🎤 Mad Brokli
10. Oct 2019 · 13:46 UTC
@cyberstarlight That's invaluable information! We're very grateful for your time! We'll definitely be putting in place some balancing factor for the turrets (either higher hit rate or cheaper ammo), as well your recommendation of faster spawn rates for the spawner.

Thanks once again!

We agree we do have to work on re-balancing the economy, or adding more content to make reaching such targets more engaging.

@greendinogames the first building (bits and pieces) is meant to make the lava walkable, so you have to make sure that the square is on a lava tile to be able to be placed :).

This game looks great, game plays nice also nice. I like the idea, but feel the prices are to steep. The game got very to repetitive. Maybe remove the activation cost of buildings, so they pay for them self quicker, also since the turret often seems to use more souls then they generate.

The balance scale is quite touch with turrets taking more souls than they bring in. I was better off starting over and harvesting everything myself...then I died because I can't attack upwards.

I would immediately play it again if it would be rebalanced and the random generation would work better. Imho dont let the enemies spawn indefinetly on land where you arent or kill them after sometime, so that they spawn somewhere else again. And wait a little bit until you spawn Angels. Currently you can get overrun if you are one a nice and big island, but have a real slow and boring run if you spawn on little islands. Spawning on small island s and connecting them is super fun, so i would balance it towards being rewarding to have small connected islands.
Overall that was fun and i played multiple runs just because... :)

Nice and fun initially, but gets a bit tedious late game. First and foremost: The graphics and atmosphere are awesome. But combat is kinda boring. Maybe add some weapon cooldown or increase the number of enemies which attack your structures. I'd also add some kind of level progression to spice up the game. I love the concept of turrets and idiot dispensers, but then your realize, that the whole game is only about an optimization strategy and it gets boring a bit from then on.

Nonetheless: Interesting concept with a lot of soul. But combat and progression could be improved.

I like it! The majority of the game was done quite well. Maybe the controls could be better, in the first run my mind switched to wasd moving and building with curseror - then an angel visited me ... The resource gathering is one of the clearly innovative points, there might be chance for some tweaks there e.g. a walllike construction like bits (changing the terrain is cool too), and towers can somehow become resource sinks. Overall a good entry, with it's strongest points in mood and innovation, it's weakpoint is the theme (you start with something, yes you don't start with some souls ...) but I would blame the theme not your work. Well done :dvd:

Still, need gameplay polishing, prices are a little too high.

But for sure more polishing was nearly impossible to perform in the scope of a game jam.

Would like to see the development of your idea. :3

I placed 4 idols, 1 cookie, and 2 turrets. Spent some time on this and. It was my tiny piece of farming paradise. But then I was distracted by something and was killed by one enemy. -_-

Hey @tankypally thanks for playing the game! :) Thanks for your feedback! Are you using the web version or the mac build?

Nice game! Really enjoyed how simple the basic mechanics were and how many different strategies you can still apply. The sound effects are also super nice and the artstyle very much reminds me of Isaac (as other people already mentioned :D )

One issue I have is that my character tends to outrun the camera and that that leads me into enemies quite often. Other than that, solid entry!

Great game! Took a while to build up the resources, but when I finally got to a point when I could build something the game go pretty exciting! The build up the resources did take a while, so maybe balance that out a bit and maybe lerp the camera to the player a little quicker. Great game nonetheless! Graphics and audio were great, reminded me of BlackThornProd and the screams made me giggle.

I love the graphics and the sound, very atmospheric. Also great game over screen). The sole point to be improved is the economics that seems a bit too easy for the moment. Nevertheless a very fun game.

Great entry. Had fun. Took me a bit to figure out what I was supposed to do. Quite polished also which was nice. All in all great job!

Fun game, ran well on Web too. Fun take on some sort of a tower defense/tower builder. Fighting was a tad weird with only 4 directions to face; but it worked out pretty well in this game!

Graphics are excellent, loved the art style. The audio is good too, music got a tad repetitive but nothing annoying or weird! Good game and great effort!

Nice game! Cool graphics & audio. It was fun to play. I wish though fighting was a bit more interesting and less repetitive, as I was just smashing space bar all the time. (different weapons? enemies?) But it was overall a great game, congrats! :D

It'd be cool to see a little more variety in the souls, and a larger harvest once you buy the soul portal things.

Once you've got to building a few things, there's not much point in fighting any more. You can just sit your guy behind a wall of the cross-bows and wait it out.

Great music , sound and graphics. If you keep working on this, more traps please! : )

Thank you all for playing the game and for the feedback! :) The items at launch were a bit expensive and most people could bearly get enough for the turrets, hence we made the items a bit cheaper so you guys can get the items faster and build as much as you can. We will continue developing the game and we already have a list of more items & gameplay improvements thanks to your feedback! :)

This looks and sounds great, and it's very impressive for 72 hours. Those little souls are so cute.

Good stuff :8ball:

A mix between a hack/slash and tower defense, I love it :D Pretty fitting for spooky season too. Nice progression rate/system, starting slow then getting hellish. Definitely addicting. WASD controls as an option in addition to the arrow keys would be nice. I love watching tons of souls flow into the 'hotel' :fog: The ability to scale things up yourself by buying spawner type buildings is a nice addition.

_Let's get some souls!_

This was a really nicely polished game, the art was very on point, and the animations and designs were fantastic!
The game itself was a bit... easy? It seems to be framed as a tower defense game, but ultimately when I played it felt more like an idle game. Once I built 70 turrets for almost money I could just sit there and do nothing while the number went up.

I think the game would strongly benefit from:
* Enemies that are more resilient, perhaps even increasing their health pool over time or making them less prone to knockback
* More enemies - addresses the same problem as above, if a horde increases their numbers exponentially then it'll be impossible for my 10 turrets to keep up, and I'll be *forced* to build a clever death path for them to walk through
* Enemies that fire projectiles - Even without turrets, combat is a bit easy, just by spamming the scythe. Having bullets to dodge would make combat more challenging, and stop me from simply hiding behind a wall of turrets
* Damageable units, or units that need repair- The game has tower defense feel, but there's no tower or anything losing health ever. I set turrets up all over the map and reap (haha) the benefits without even thinking about it- making units destructable would make everything a lot more challenging.
* Build times- Currently, if I see an enemy, I can quickly slap down 10 turrets and then do a dance. Having to wait a few seconds for the turret to finish, or limiting what I can do in that time (if I have to directly spend time "working" on the turret) would leave room for juggling between survival and building.

Of course, there's always more room for more building types- but that's limited by how much time you had, and for 72 hours you made a very nice roster of buildables.

The one issue I had was the lack of an end goal. I ended up stopping after building at least one of each building and then filling up all my wells. In idle game situations, I suppose the end is usually determined by building an ultimate object (if idle games even end), which isn't much different from an arbitrary number goal. Either one would have worked here- at some point I just had no point to continue doing anything. I no longer needed to "survive" since nothing could hurt me and souls were generated infinitely- and because I have no "needs", it's not really a survival game at all... So ending with building something like a portal bridging hell and earth would have worked nicely.

Sorry if this post was a bit long, ahah, I just really enjoyed it and think it has a lot of potential!
Overall I think you have something really nice here, and I would love to see it developed post-jam!

I really like the vector style graphics, animation, and the audio! Very polished with a great aesthetic. The controls are responsive and the building mechanic works well. You also incorporated the theme nicely. I found staying alive to be a bit too easy (mashing space seems to do the trick) and little incentive to build anything since there isn't really an overall goal besides staying alive. Also you should probably provide a link to the original submission since 1.1 contains additions beyond bugfixes. Great job - I enjoyed playing!

@selkkie Wow what an in-depth analysis! thanks for playing the game and providing such incredible feedback. Breakable buildings will definitely be added, it was part of the original plan, we even have buildings breaking sound effects ready, but we unfortunately ran out of time. Will definitly be looking at your suggestions during the post-jam development!

@balance686 Thanks for playing the game and for your feedback Will be uploading the original one thanks for pointing it out! :)

I had so much fun playing this! Nice graphics and music! Maybe spawning more enemies or making it more difficult over time could make the player stay even longer! I'd love to see more features! Great job!

Game was pretty fun! I think I kind of broke it when I forgot I was in build mode and accidentally spammed turrets everywhere. Turns out they are really powerful, so I could just sit back and relax while they got me free souls. Eventually I got bored and ran around until I died, but it triggered some kind of exception when I lost. I would give more info but all it said was:
```
An exception has occurred, but exception handling has been disabled in this build. If you are the developer of this content, enable exceptions in your project WebGL player settings to be able to catch the exception or see the stack trace.
```
So I doubt that's useful. Overall though the game is super fun to play, the graphics are great, music works well, and I could see this being balanced and expanded upon further in the future. Great work!

Fun game, though I pressing 1 to 5 didn't seem to build anything, like some others had managed to do. I played the Web version, was that the one updated to v1.1? I did manage to get 150 souls without dying though, so it was rather easy in a way~

Damn!!! Why didn't I play your game before. Its just amazing and love the idea of including building. The music goes very well with the game. I had a problem while playing, not sure if its a bug or not but I was not able to build. I pressed the space bar but still I couldn't build but that didn't stop the game from being awesome. Nice work!!
