Hellion: The Legend of Jeff by Mad Brokli
https://youtu.be/RzWkQBr6cgg

Hellion, The Legend of Jeff, is a building-based, hack and slash survival game, where we follow (shocker time) Jeff as he attempts to massacre his way to wealth. Aid Jeff as he cleans up his tiny piece of hell from errant humans and self righteous Angels. Using the souls he reaps, a variety of buildings are made available to help him speed up his clean up so he might actually make it to watching his favorite soap opera tonight.

You can use souls to pave your way through lava, build turrets that reap soul for you even during potty breaks, pits that enlarge your storage of souls, spawners that poop out humans ripe for reaping and lures that confound these humans so much, they wouldn't see Jeff's scythe coming if it was covered in Christmas lights. Combine these buildings together, and well, it might just get as funny as Hell.

Also, remember to not die. Those Angels might be pompous, but they pack quite a punch. Thankfully for Jeff, he's got the best insurance in hell, so he gets another life point for every 15 souls he gathers.

So strap on your horns, sharpen your scythes and get down to business. We look forward to seeing how you use the buildings, so if you've thought of a particularly clever death trap that Jeff himself might cringe upon, post a gif of it at work accompanied by #JEFFGIF on our Twitter.

Can build bridges also to access other islands.
Glad you guys enjoyed playing it
Remarks: It takes some time to gather the necessary resources to build the expensive towers. Also when I got the arrow turret the number of souls was often fractional (which could be a bit confusing).
yes it does take a bit of time. Once you get a couple of towers and attractors the souls starts comming in much faster.
Also the turrets take a fraction of a soul every time they shoot.
Thanks for the feedback :)
With every 15 souls you get 1 health back. We added that at the end of the jam so you are right we didnt explain how it worked.
Really like your game
Good job.

Glad you like it
Thanks for your comment @randdir :)
The turrets needs to be placed carefully for maximum effectivness. Ideally next to an attractor and gatherer.
Basically a gatherer spawns more humans, and they all move towards the attractor. Then place a bunch of turrets.
We plan on furthor developing the game and all of your feedback is much appreciated in creating a better experience! :)
:purple_heart: :dart: :frog:
The idea was to implement larger, more varied enemies where your towers and buildings would come in handy, so I guess that would make the game drift further into TD, but we'll keep the options open for post jam.
Map size might have decreased had we had more time to play test the game, we agreed! As for random spawn points, I suppose we didn't want player to fortify spawn points and not have to worry about angels anymore, but we'll keep it in mind!
Once again, thank you for the feedback and we're glad to liked it <3!
As per your question, music was made using bosca ceoil (https://boscaceoil.net/). We're really proud of it because it felt like it fit real well <3. Thank you guys once again!
I like the graphics, it reminded me of super meat boy, the effects on the soul wells were pretty great too, good work.
The music fits perfectly and it's also pretty catchy ^^
The idea is great though I felt like no matter what i do I kept losing about the same souls as I was getting, the "tax" on everything combined to being too high to reach satisfying revenues from automating stuff.
I'd really like the option to deconstruct stuff and maybe even floors to better plan traps etc, that could have been cool.
Overall it was fun to play, it feels pretty good. great job!
Deconstruction of both buildings and floors will definitely be included in any future release, as it's very clear that something like that make the experience better.
Once again, thanks for all the detailed feedback, and we hope you'll be back to review our Post Jam releases in the future :)
I felt that the crossbows miss too often, so the 0.25 cost would minimize a lot of their revenue, combine that with the 0.2 cost for a human spawner, you lose 0.45 even in the best case scenario, if the crossbow misses once (which happens often) that's 0.7 loss, then angels come in and they try to hit those instead, and miss..
I tried a spawner alone, too slow for any benefit, tried it with a crossbow near it but the crossbow still shooting at other stuff reduced that revenue, it exists but very slow.
I tried making a human attracting mushroom, surrounding it with three spawners and two crossbows, and it was still pretty slow.
I think the crossbows need to hit more often, spawners spawn more often, and taxes to be reduced a bit.
well I hope that helps, but that's just my impression so take it with a grain of salt.
Thanks once again!
We agree we do have to work on re-balancing the economy, or adding more content to make reaching such targets more engaging.
@greendinogames the first building (bits and pieces) is meant to make the lava walkable, so you have to make sure that the square is on a lava tile to be able to be placed :).
Thanks for playing it guys! We appreciate your kind words and your feedback!
We will however be continuing development on the game and particles, screenshakes, etc.. will be the first to be added :)
Addicting game nonetheless, you sure had me playing for about 30 minutes
Overall that was fun and i played multiple runs just because... :)
@shubart thank you dude for playing :)
Nonetheless: Interesting concept with a lot of soul. But combat and progression could be improved.
Thank you guys for playing the game. Your feedback is greatly appreciated! We are working on establishing a more balanced economy for the items. We had loads of fun creating this game and we shall be releasing more content Post-Jam and expanding the game further with more content, bosses, etc..

I had fun with the game, it was quite challenging at some point. Nice art, reminded me of Biding of Isaac. Good bgm and sfx. Great game over all, good job.
@t-bo Thanks Yes, we loved to play binding of isaac its a great game and we love that art style.
Thanks for the feedback guys :)
Very nice entry! I see you really know what you are doing! :3
Still, need gameplay polishing, prices are a little too high.
But for sure more polishing was nearly impossible to perform in the scope of a game jam.
Would like to see the development of your idea. :3
I placed 4 idols, 1 cookie, and 2 turrets. Spent some time on this and. It was my tiny piece of farming paradise. But then I was distracted by something and was killed by one enemy. -_-
So I not able to share a screen.
Anyway, I had fun! Well done! :3
Sorry to tag you like this. Most of the comments here are about the economy of the game, and we agree it was a bit too high. So finally we pushed out an update. We have updated the economy and adjusted a few bugs. The turrents have a better hit rate while costing much less along with more small details.
A shame that some buildings are broken and dont produce what you ask them to.
I think camera follow movement could be faster; and the scythe not being very effective in the up direction feels weird for a top down game.
One issue I have is that my character tends to outrun the camera and that that leads me into enemies quite often. Other than that, solid entry!
Graphics are excellent, loved the art style. The audio is good too, music got a tad repetitive but nothing annoying or weird! Good game and great effort!
Once you've got to building a few things, there's not much point in fighting any more. You can just sit your guy behind a wall of the cross-bows and wait it out.
Great music , sound and graphics. If you keep working on this, more traps please! : )

Good stuff :8ball:
_Let's get some souls!_

The game itself was a bit... easy? It seems to be framed as a tower defense game, but ultimately when I played it felt more like an idle game. Once I built 70 turrets for almost money I could just sit there and do nothing while the number went up.
I think the game would strongly benefit from:
* Enemies that are more resilient, perhaps even increasing their health pool over time or making them less prone to knockback
* More enemies - addresses the same problem as above, if a horde increases their numbers exponentially then it'll be impossible for my 10 turrets to keep up, and I'll be *forced* to build a clever death path for them to walk through
* Enemies that fire projectiles - Even without turrets, combat is a bit easy, just by spamming the scythe. Having bullets to dodge would make combat more challenging, and stop me from simply hiding behind a wall of turrets
* Damageable units, or units that need repair- The game has tower defense feel, but there's no tower or anything losing health ever. I set turrets up all over the map and reap (haha) the benefits without even thinking about it- making units destructable would make everything a lot more challenging.
* Build times- Currently, if I see an enemy, I can quickly slap down 10 turrets and then do a dance. Having to wait a few seconds for the turret to finish, or limiting what I can do in that time (if I have to directly spend time "working" on the turret) would leave room for juggling between survival and building.
Of course, there's always more room for more building types- but that's limited by how much time you had, and for 72 hours you made a very nice roster of buildables.
The one issue I had was the lack of an end goal. I ended up stopping after building at least one of each building and then filling up all my wells. In idle game situations, I suppose the end is usually determined by building an ultimate object (if idle games even end), which isn't much different from an arbitrary number goal. Either one would have worked here- at some point I just had no point to continue doing anything. I no longer needed to "survive" since nothing could hurt me and souls were generated infinitely- and because I have no "needs", it's not really a survival game at all... So ending with building something like a portal bridging hell and earth would have worked nicely.
Sorry if this post was a bit long, ahah, I just really enjoyed it and think it has a lot of potential!
Overall I think you have something really nice here, and I would love to see it developed post-jam!
@balance686 Thanks for playing the game and for your feedback Will be uploading the original one thanks for pointing it out! :)
```
An exception has occurred, but exception handling has been disabled in this build. If you are the developer of this content, enable exceptions in your project WebGL player settings to be able to catch the exception or see the stack trace.
```
So I doubt that's useful. Overall though the game is super fun to play, the graphics are great, music works well, and I could see this being balanced and expanded upon further in the future. Great work!
But at some moment sound in html5 version got broken
@coachsisyphus thanks dude very glad you enjoyed playing our game! We will be continue to develop the game furthor!
Making of video here if you guys are interested: https://youtu.be/lsK2Fk8dxmY
@a-bond The downloadable versions are much better than html5. Thanks for your feedback tho and we will look into it ! :)
