Kitten Catastrophe by Phasm Studios

[raw]
made by Phasm Studios for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

This was a crazy adventure as me and my friend have never posted one game and to take part in this event was awesome! It was such a great experience! Even though there are a lot of bugs, my friend and I had fun making this project for the ludam dare. There was a problem with the screen and the UI elements but anyway, we want to thank you for playing! (Lucas - Programming) (Marcel - Art) Everything you need to know about the game is in the description.

Awesome game! Had tons of fun! I spent the game dreading the sight of a bird, I just couldn't duck fast enough!

Good controls but you should disable the WASD since W doesn't do anything. Is kinda confusing what can and can't kill me. Can't avoid the bird lol. Great implementation overall.

Nice design, I love how you create an arcade game with this theme. Congrats!

Really impressive for a first entry and after only three months of coding learning.
The rules and controls are simple, still the game is challenging enough. The graphics are nice and there is also particules effects. I would have added a short in-game tutorial and a file system to save the player best score in the web browser local storage. And as the game is played with the keyboard, pressing a key to restart the game.
It is a fun and complete game. Nice :v:

Yeah, I'm impressed with this being a first entry, too. Fun and expressive graphics, amazing sound, and a real difficult game! I hate those lights!!! But we did get mauled by a dog and then run over by an exploding car. Wow! Smithereens! Thank you so much for the game! Can't wait to see what you accomplish in the future!

Very good first entry, graphics and sound are great with fun gameplay. I'm really bad at it, as I am with all games that require fast reactions . Main suggestion would be to make sure you have WASD as well as the arrow keys for controls as that confused me for a little while trying to find the key to jump. Hope to see more from you .

Are you allowed to change the keys or not

Very difficult game due to some design choices. For a first game, it's good. Here are some critiques to help make the game better:

-The obstacles aren't intuitive. For example, the light post falling is impossible for a first time player to know. This is usually a mechanic found in rage games. I'm not sure if you intended for this or not.

-Too much visual clutter. It's difficult to figure out what I'm supposed to be avoiding because the background is so active. Highlighting obstacles is necessary to distinguish them from the background

-Hitboxes are too tight. Took me a while to understand that it was possible to jump over the dog and it wasn't just an instant death

-Bird is impossible to react to. It comes waaaaaayy too fast. Another trope of rage games. Not sure if intentional or not

-Restarting should just be another keyboard key and not through mouse controls. It's really inconvenient for a player. Space/any key to restart would make a lot more sense.

All in all, good job for a beginner. Looking forward to future projects.

Looks nice, difficult to play especially for beginners. Would like the obstacle to be more intuitive, otherwise you don't see that coming.

I really like the graphics and the sound FXs. I feel it a little bit difficult. But the arcade look is really good!

Solid mechanics but a bit unfair with the bird. Nails hard game overall, maybe a bit to the frustrating side. Graphics were nice and I liked the music. At 80's people actually paid for this kind of games. It reminds me of Pacland that I played as a kid, even the frustration feels quite the same

Oh boy, this one was brutal. I like the premise, but I thought the design choices were quite unfair to the player. I felt like for the most part, every time I died it was because of something I was unable to respond to, either because it happened too fast or because the RNG created a scenario that was a "dead end" gameplay wise. The graphics had a nice direction, but I think the execution left a bit to be desired (stretched images, differing pixel sizes etc). Overall, some more dev time would go a long way on letting the game breathe a bit more and be more fun to play. Thanks for sharing!

Nice first game! The lamp posts had a weird error where they would only trigger some of the time or at different distances, making it hard to predict. If you want to polish this game further, I'd check on those. The particle effects, sound and over controls felt very satisfying. Congrats!

For the first game, this is really good! The difficulty of this game is a little hit or miss, as at times I died from something I couldn't foresee or the RNG wasn't in my favor. That all said, the graphics and game play are on point. Well done!

Great first game, certainly better than my first Jam submission years ago. The pixel art looks great, and I quite like the idea. Though I thought it was pretty unforgiving. It could use a bit more of a difficulty curve.

Good job.

Had fun playing your game! Got to 114m where I had to jump over a dog, avoid 2 street lamps and also got hit by a car haha.

You and your friend both did really well, so be very happy with what you made. Nice one!
