The Blind Hummingbird by Webox

[raw]
made by Webox for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

IMPORTANT: Some browsers are experiencing a bug where the bird flies away off screen, if that's the case for you this is the post jam version: (That bug fix is the only thing that changes)

https://webox.itch.io/the-blind-hummingbird-postjam

A puzzle game about a hummingbird who can't see and must eat to survive.

A bat friend showed her how to use it's wings flapping as a sonar, and can now move seeing what's really close around. Eat all the food in one area to move to the next one, don't let the bird die!!

Controls: * WASD To move * E to eat * SPACE to increase sight * F to leave a landmark * Q to recall to landmark

Your game is good. I really like the art style. There were some issue with the movement and the life, but it’s still amazing.

The first game I played of this jam (besides my own of course!) and it is already one of my favorites! Great job, really the like idea of making a game about a humming bird!

@dlc-scar thanks for playing!! Sorry to hear about the problems, What problems did you have??

@collin-thompson Hey thanks a lot!! I'm really glad you liked it, I'm really happy with it and for me that's what really count on LD. But seeing that others liked it makes me really happy! Also, this is my first time in the compo, so I still can't believe I made it on time

Nice art and sound. But I also have problems with the movement. The bird is flying out of the screen most of the time and I have to restart the level. So I cannot realy play the game.

Really interesting concept! I liked the puzzle of figuring out where to drop waypoints in order to make it through the level in time.

@webox Sorry, there were no problems with the life. I only read it wrong because the 0 looked like an 8 lol. When I bump into a wall, the life point decreases. I don't know if it was supposed to do that but nevertheless, I love your game and your sprites were really cool.

@majadroid hnmm , really sorry to hear that. I haven't found that bug in every platform I tested it, what browser and OS are you using?? maybe that can help me track the issue.

@amatsugu hey thanks!! I'm really glad you liked it!!

@pabricka thanks!! I went for 16x16 sprites because I suck at drawing, so less pixels, less chances of making my drawings suck haha. Thanks a lot for playing!!

@stefanie-leitch Hey! yes, that's the main idea of complex puzzles, plus the fact that you can make a food sacrifice to see far and maybe make a strategic move. Thanks for playing!

@bgamedev thanks for playing!! I'm glad you liked it!

@dlc-scar yeah no, haha that's not supposed to happen. I guess I put the food decrease control before the collision check :face_palm: thanks for the feedback! I'll fix it!

Music and art was great! The game play was interesting as well, one thing I'd suggest is to increase the time on the first level and maybe make it more difficult later on? I spent a bit of time figuring out the game and it suddenly ended on me but I got it eventually!

Oh wow your style is good yourself. I love the transitions and the polish. You made the music yourself too ? Much thought put into it.

I wanted to give the game a good try but unfortunately the bird kept flying off the screen.
If you fix the bug I'll be sure to come back to try it again.

I might try this style next time.

I think the beetles would have made for interesting enemies, considering that they move around and can be found by the sound they produce - my first instinct wasn't really to eat them. Outside of that, my only gripe is that the music has this one part where it sounds like a severely distorted guitar, which really grates on the ears.
Other than that, a pretty solid effort! Thanks for making this.

@ioan-pop Hey thanks a lot for playing!! Yes, more levls woudl've been great it's getting interesting. maybe I'll add more for a post jam version. Music was done using a procedural generator called abundant music, and then editing the result using Audacity, i removed weird sounding midi channels, cutted and edited the parts I didn't like and added some notes here and there. I don't know a lot about music, and I was actually really anoyed by teh result. Hearing that you liked it is really great! :D

@twowolf damn, you're the second person to report that bug, I can't seem to reproduce it. Did it happened while moving or while using the recall ability?? Also which browser and OS?

@artylo Ohh, I think maybe a predator could've been cool yes.. didn't tought about it. I was trying to keep it simple since it's my first time in the compo and I wanted to finish on time. I did some research and it looks like humming birds eat smaall beettles that's the reason I added them. Thanks for the feedback, I'll add some predators if I keep working on it!

weird,I made it on a windows mahchine and tested it there.. I'm on my work pc now, that's why I told I was on a mac. I'll try to reproduce the error in the evening! I think it's proably during the recall ability.. I can think of a few reasons that animation is making you fly off. Thanks!!

@oskardev thanks for playing!! I hope you wer looking for some relax! haha

Fun Idea, but it took a while for me to get all of the mechanics. Things did get easier once I understood the return to point mechanic, but even then It turned into a game of guess, check, and memorise. Cool execution though, the humming birt theme was fun.

@zeggamer hey thanks for the feedback!! Yes, this was my first time on the compo so i tried to keep it simple, someone mentioned enemies mechanic would've been cool. I didn't think about it (I probbable wouldn't have made it on time tho). Thanks for playing, I'm glad you liked it!

I won't be rating this game, the bird also keeps flying off the screen for me. I'm using Firefox 75. After 1-3 steps, the screen turns grey and the bird keeps flying in the same direction, and I can't control the game after that. The screen look like this (I resized the screenshot otherwise it's too large):

DawCrash
21. Apr 2020 · 21:56 UTC
Played the postjam version. I really liked it. The movement system is like a roguelike and there are little blinking circles that points to the food, I liked that detail

I've found a typo in the text at the beggining, "each movement takes enery" (energy?), and there's a little bug in the life counter, sometimes shows 11, 18, 9 instead of 11, 10, 9, but these are minor details. Overall very good

@azagaya thanks a lot!!! I'm glad you liked it, I suck so bad at art that receiving compliments about graphics is really refreshing haha

@pke1029 hey thanks a lot!!! Don't worry, I suck at it too.. tends to happen to me.. sucking at my own games haha

@noxalus yes! I'm super proud of my really quick to develop fog of war (I cheated and created two version of the same sprites, one colored and one gray) no shaders or anything fancy.. It was my first time on the compo so I need to work quick!

@jonrei jajaj you can never have enough roguelike hummingbird games!

@dawcrash Thanks for playing!! Yeah, I noticed the typo during a stream earlier today and it hurted a lot haha. The postjam only fixes one breaking bug, happening with some old machines. I guess typos are a thing during compo too, that screen was made in about 3 minutes , 1 hour before submission xD

22. Apr 2020 · 01:39 UTC
I have to agree. You can never have enough roguelike hummingbird games! So thanks for helping to fill that gap.

There was a good balance of exploration and resource management in this game. I think I got caught by the food decrease before collision because I'd occasionally lose more food than I thought I should. Maybe I just took to long to move?

In any case, I thoroughly approve of being a hummingbird and sonar-ing my way around a landscape. Also, good use of abundant music. I didn't even notice until you mentioned it. It's a great tool and it's cool to hear how you've refined it's output.

The Sound & Music are nice, the graphics are peaceful and goes along perfectly with the audio stuff. The controls seem spot on. The game play is very casual (which I happen to prefer) and overall, I think it's a beautiful entry into the game jam. I wish you the best of luck.

Great atmosphere - music and art spot on.

The only minor comment I'd have is that the story text at the bottom could have been a bit more prominent - for instance slightly larger and maybe closer to the hummingbird as I found it a bit distracting to be moving my eyes back and forth.

Great game with a nice atmosphere! It felt so tense when I didn't have many moves left, then just as I found the last bug it moved and I ran out of turns (This was a great experience and fun gameplay moment)! Great job, I'd love to see more !

@thepelranthean hahah indeed, thank for playing the game and for the nice comments!! The food before collision is a bug yep.. It's a compo game, so intense testing was out of reach hehe.

@almighty-games thanks for playing! nice streaming btw, I'm really glad you liked it!

@d1str4kt0r Woah, hearing those kind of comments really makes feel great, It's my first in a compo so having to create everything was a real challenge and it's awesome to see people liking it!!

@wilsk Hey thanks for playing!! Tutorial was a last minute feature, I totally agree.. positioning was odd and the font was too small on some screens which kind of sucks.

@geroblacksmith haha thanks for playing!! Don't feel bad for the bird, she's happy with her sonar wings

@cg-fred hey Fred! nice to see you here, thanks a lot for playing it! Yes indeed, My previous jam had the issue of ramping up too quickly so I tried to go the other way this time and ended up being the complete opposite. I just cant find the sweet spot yet.. It's a challenge for the next jam

@tom-stephenson thanks for playing!! A few streamers called out that thing you're describing, they were feeling relaxed by the music but tense by the amount of food haha. It's in my mind to create that feeling, but when I played tested it myself I didn't saw it (maybe because I was tired of replaying). It's really cool to hear that the effect was there for other people! :D

@muchobestostudio Thanks for playing! Yes, It's my first time in the compo so I focused on main mechanics, art and sound. Tutorials were last minute and ended up being not that effective.

Might be a little fatigued from rating, but overall felt like the game did what it set out to do. The main issue my friend & I had with it was that it was very simple, very straight-forward, and didn't really leave us wanting to play more. It kind of felt like this is the extent of the game, and what we saw was about as far as the game could go.

Music and art was good though!

hey @marcmagus thanks for sharing the clip!! Awseome feedback on that one, and a great twitch channel. Thanks a lot for playing it and sharing!

@jesterserap Since it's a compo game (and also my first time trying to make a compo game) I tried to keep it simple, doing art and sfx when you're not an artist is a tough task. Also, I wasn't sure how much it's going to take, hence the simplicity. Thanks for playing!
