Sandy Road by guksas

[raw]
made by guksas for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Quill18 suggested making any game, even ping pong and slapping the theme on it. Well I somehow made a game that I'm not embarrassed to call a game - Sandy Road and it's nothing like ping pong. Your goal is to survive as long as possible, or at least until you get bored. To score shoot the drivers. Made in Unity, in 24 hours. Please comment your high scores, I'm genuinely interested and have a wonderful day.

2020/04/20 14:18 - Added level reset if r is pressed.

OK, so I added a quick press r to reload level, because it's just annoying to shut down and then start up the game again after you die. I hope this doesn't count as a new feature, just a quality of life improvement.

Just in case i left the original submission aswell.

Controls:

WASD to move.

Right mouse button to aim.

Left mouse button to shoot.

Alt+f4 to quit.

2020/04/20 14:18 - r to reset.

I got 11!

It was pretty fun, though it could use an auto-restart if you die. I would suggest trying to slim down your feature set so you can get more *game* in, yknow? It was pretty optimal to hit the drivers instead of dealing with the shooters because the drivers would die in 1 shot, so it made a lot of the other features redundant.

Otherwise it's pretty solid for 24 hours!

The idea is really solid. I really like how the enemies can shoot each other. Definitely wish there was a way to restart, though. My highest score was 11.

@jabdownsmash Any kind of restart is a must for a game like this, sadly i just ran out of time. And yea, i get ya. Thank you for your time.

@decadedecaf Thank you. And yeah the restart thing is a must. It just took me too long to realize it :D.

Not bad for 24 hours! For those wondering, the description of the controls is wrong (at least it was for me). Keep right button pressed to aim, and press left to shoot.

I was hoping you could also steer the car and ram others :)
Plus the obvious required restart option!

@endurion Thanks. For the controls you are totally right, I have no idea how I mixed those up. The description should be fixed now. And for the ramming, yup, was totally planning to do that, but I underestimated how long it will take me to code enemy re-spawning and ironing out some nasty bugs, not to mention my spaghetti code.

Nice simple game
That's sad that there is no just simple scene reload on "R" key or smthg

@bjakubowski Yeah I kinda messed up and thought it would take like an hour of coding to implement it, but thanks to your comment I just found out it's quite easy and only takes one minute using Unity scene manager. So I added it in. Thank you.

Great work! I got 24 :) - Took me a second to realise you have to shoot the drivers! I was just having a chill time driving along with the 2 gunner-less cars haha! I like that they keep firing on your body even after you die. Blood lust never sated! I also like watching the bodies slide around in the trucks...

Hey, I realy enjoyed playing your game. But I guess some action-packed adventure background music would transfer the mood a little better.

I loved unique way of exiting the game! Very creative Id never thought to use key combination for that :)

I think that moving car instead of da boi would be better and would give space for some new mechanics like obstacles, crushing into other cars etc

I didn't play for very long, but I got the general idea of the game. You are locked in a very confined area, and have to dodge incoming missiles (bullets) to progress in the game. Due to the small area of movement, this doesn't lend much to the actual game play. The visuals reminded me of old Atari games, so if a person was into that sort of thing, I imagine they would be happy to play the game. The graphics looked good in that they matched each other, and blended well with the game environment. The sound effects suited the graphics. There was a few unintended game behaviors, such as enemies shooting other enemies, and the vehicles melding together. I'm sure with a little more time you could have easily fixed that. But the biggest problem of course was that the game had no End Condition (it didn't actually tell you that you lost and offer the ability to try again) For that, I had ALT+F4, which is no big deal for game jam, but could have easily been resolved if you had thought of it in advance. Good entry, and best of luck in the jam. I look forward to your next games.

Liked the game, could be improved very easily because the only faults are small things, like the color of the projectiles and the keymapping R to reset. Liked playing the game, couldn't get passed round 10ish but thats probably just user error oops :((

My highest score was 12 but it was cool. you seem to be able to kill people before they are on screen which is not ideal but still. A cool entry :)
