Running Old Game On Windows 10 Simulator 2020 by Kszaku

[raw]
made by Kszaku for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Have you ever experienced pain, frustration and anxiety of editing configuration files, running different compatibility modes (1), mounting forgotten .iso images (because your new PC does not have a CD drive) and searching through your old stuff, to find CD cover with CD key on it, that eventually ended in disappointment (as it often happens with things we are nostalgic about), because that game you remembered from your childhood was never that good in the first place and you will spend rest of your adult life working, then your body will get old, and one day you will die?

Would you like to relive it? Regardless of your answer, I present you "Running Old Game On Windows 10 Simulator 2020". Have... Fun?

1) It never works, so don't even bother

Nice work! I've never... played? Something like that before.

I made it to the end and I really enjoyed all the meta elements (that I won't spoil here) that went into creating the whole experience. I feel like I would definitely play a longer and more painful version of this if it existed.

I mean if it was more like solving a puzzle, and not like the real "running an old game" experience, which is like repeatedly going to Google for old forum posts from a decade ago.

This a great concept. Very meta. I gave up pretty quickly but can imagine where it is going. Nice work!

So this is really interesting and I want to keep going... but I am stuck on it saying "Insert game CD to drive C:\ and try again". This might be cheating but I've looked through the source code and I can't even find the message in there anywhere. Does it actually check if you have a CD inserted? Because if so, I don't have a disk tray on my computer. Or maybe I'm just overthinking this.

Wow, this was a puzzle game I feel like I've played a bunch before in the past. It took a while but I managed to complete it. Very unique idea! Also it's the first LD game I felt I might get a virus from, haha

Loved it! Please DO make a longer version... make me recompile a kernel as a final boss.

OK I actually liked it haha I'm surprised :D I think this idea following this theme of "Keep it alive" is really excellent and well thought, and it's a very good message you tried to pass here.
Now I think indeed you could have gone a bit further in the concept, although I admit it could be hard for a lot (you know, the normal people, not us)

This is genius! I don't think I've ever seen a jam entry quite like this.

I love meta games like this, it was really authentic and getting to the end genuinely felt like an accomplishment.

Super unique idea for a puzzle game, and I was surprised with how compelled I was to see it through to the end! Very well done!

@billehbawb you have to download an ISO image from itch.io page, and mount it

Really enjoyed this, quite meta and interesting. Definitely would like to see a longer version. Gave up at one point as I was trying to guess the CD Key, I removed everything then spotted the image :face_palm:. Hope to see more in the future

Wow that was awesome, thank you.

I like how the game take some time to launch, while we are like: "oh god is it going to work ?? if it load it's good right ?" and then BAM, error message.

Great job !

Very cool concept I love these types of puzzle games! Managed to complete it but may have cheated a bit with the CD key.

And that...is how you capture a feeling. Awesome!

Not much fun. The concept was good and fairly related to the theme, but it just wasn't fun. At the end, all I get is a pop up saying I was successful. I didn't get a real abandoned game ;-(

I like this concept ! Wish it'd be longer with harder "puzzles". Could be used to test one's skills.
Very nice and original entry ! (pleasemakeabiggerone)

@kszaku thank you!

Okay, now that I've actually beaten the "game", that was really cool. Loved the interpretation of the theme. I may or may not have got the key from the source code and then only realized afterwards that it was on the image... oops. Either way I did some detective work so thats what matters. At least that's how I am justifying it. Good stuff!

I like VERY MUCH these types of games that break the 4th wall and make you mess with things outside of the game. But I never expected to find something like that on a Ludum Dare! It was very unexpected and a pleasant experience, really unique game, great job!

By the way, have you played [Notpron](http://notpron.com/)? If not, I think you will like it ;)

This game reminds me of a lot of problems I had with PCs at the time of the CD. Great idea, nostalgic feelings xD!

I don't see how this fits into the theme, tbh, but I love the idea anyway. Unfortunately, I got stuck very early on. What do you put into the drive letter?
🎤 Kszaku
27. Apr 2020 · 19:09 UTC
@nnnikki the game is about keeping the old software alive... or something.

have you downloaded (and mounted) the .iso file?

Well, that get's 5/5 mood from me. Pretty cool idea! And so far the most interesting interpretation of the theme I've found.

The steps that took the longest for me were the first and the CD key. Apart from that everything was solved rather quickly.

Thanks for making my LD experience a little bit more meta!
