Eternal Flame by Galgris

[raw]
made by Galgris for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Tokyo 2020 has been postponed because of the COVID-19 virus. You are in charge of protecting the olympic flame until the games can be started. Stay away from evil firefighters and don't get the virus yourself.

Keep it alive!

ld4620.gifld4617.gif

Developed from scratch, for and using PICO-8

Update: If playing on keyboard, press the 'Z'-key to start, not '2'. :smirk:

Update 2: Since so many of you guys got stuck at level 7 (the last level), with the impossible jump, I decided replace that level completely, and also add a new bonus level. Still with the same clunky controls, weird camera movement and no checkpoints... :)

The original submitted game is still available at: https://galgris.com/ld46/old.html

Thanks for playing!

The camera movement caught me off guard a few times, but I enjoyed the puzzle platformer type mechanics. I thought "Z" was 2, so it took me a minute to figure out how to get the game started, but I enjoyed it after that :)

Should have gone for that "any"-key instead I guess. Too late now tough... :)

Agreed z and 2 look alot alike for sure. The camera follow was tough to deal with. Perhaps something closer to marios movement where there is smoother transitions that only happen at the outer 3rds of the screen? overall well done!

I completed 3 stages and I liked it in general. The camera movement and controls made me nervous sometimes because they did not seem very friendly to me but it's a fun game, anyway!

Cool game! Enjoyed the art and music as well. I agree with the other comments that the camera movement seems like it could follow a bit faster, especially when restarting a level. Overall, nice job!

I liked it although the movement felt a bit off. With that being said I really like the 8 bit artstyle and sound. Well done :)

I love the art style and the game is amazing. I just wish that you could jump with the [space] key and that the game would save the level progress. But that's just because I was so bad xD

I was looking forward to your game during the mid jam progress update. Overall, love the art style, audio & feel of this game. The camera movement confused me initially coz i think it's autoscrolling and catching up to me. The jump could be made tighter by allowing directional input during airtime.

Environmental element like wind or rain will be nice addons if you consider extending the game after LD. Great work given the 48 hours constraint!

With a checkpoint system, I would have played longer. I did like how the game was kind of slow paced and still difficult. But because it was slow, I could not make my self start from the beginning when I lost at level 4.

I agree, but with a checkpoint system I would have needed more levels... :smirk:

Looks nice, sounds nice. The movement feels a tad slow, but I like the parallax backgrounds and otherwise seems like a well put together jam game.

There are a few quality of life things that jumped out at me:
Stop the player after they reach end of a level or don't game over them if they then run off the edge, stop movement while the level intro scroll happens so the player doesn't accidentally walk off the platforms while not on screen, dying restarting the level and not the game.

On a side note I've noticed that the PICO-8 entries I come across are always quite polished. I don't know if this is because of the tool itself or because the community just trends towards people who are quite proficient but it's nice.

I think maybe it's because many of us used to do this 24/7, 30 years ago, with similar tooling, now using things we have learnt over the years, looking back nostalgically.

Cool game ! A little adaptation time with the camera movements and here we go! Sounds are cool especially in stage 3 for example !
Hope you had fun to create it !

Haha, fun story! I think it's the only time I've seen firefighters as the bad guys. I like the sound design as well.

As feedback, consider adding some acceleration to the player. Going at the current speed feels unnaturally slow and makes some jumps a bit frustrating.

Fun little game, funny setup as I am actually in Tokyo now! If you ever add a checkpoint system, please ping me! I would love to see the next few levels after level 4!

Amazing work, really liked everything about this. You had me laughing out loud already at the description at the thought of someone having to maintain the olympic fire for an entire year. That good first impression carried over to the game, where the graphics are good enough to be from an actual published NES game and the music is pleasant as well.

Cool little game, but overall the jumps feel frustrating and it's especially frustrating that after you DO beat a level, if you die you go all the way back to level 1. If there was a checkpoint system I probably would have played a lot longer.

Very solid entry. The movement is a bit chunky and the platform edge detection sometimes does not work. Other than that, very enjoyable gameplay.

Haha what a nice looking platformer, I played around with it here are some of my notes:

**Things I liked**
- art style is epic
- level design is very well made with increasing difficulty
- very fittting with the theme of LD

**Things that could be improved**
- controls felt little bit clunky at times
- add more mechanics
- polish some SFX

Very nice work in 48 hour period.

Well polished entry! I had a little bug where I both completed a level and had game over (after falling down at the end of the first level), but nothing very bad though :). I like the graphics a lot!

I actually really like this game. The only issue I had was that the controls could feel a bit unresponsive at times. The graphics though are really good. Great job!

Thank you for playing my game! The comment you left made me curious! I played your game but I'm not good enough to get past the 3rd level D:
Anyway it's really well made! Just remembered me of the old times when I used to play Mario bros for hours and then you died and had to start all over again.

I love playing pico-8 games made for ludum dare. Your entry is cool. The movement seems a bit slow and not sure if I like the fact that if I lose I need to restart from the beginning. The graphic is cool, basic pixel art but nice, somehow reminds me of Mario Bros. Animations are satisfying as well. I like how you twisted the real facts with the game story. Keep it alive!!! :D

I love the NES-like feels this game gave me while playing. The art and music brought back many happy memories. The controls seemed a bit off but I was able to work with them. All in all you did a great job!

Very nice! I The classic retro game is here. The sound and the grafic were wonderful. I think that you need balance more the jump and the distance of the platform Please, keep with this project.

Nice platforming game. But there are some issues - if your flame "died" there is a delay. I can reach the goal if the flame is off but i am game over.
Also the camera follower is too slow a bit.
But i like the puzzle platforming. Keep on.

I don't know why I was given this responsibility, it's too much to take. But take it I shall! I felt a little sluggish in my movement, probably because it was morning, but otherwise it seemed like a task I could manage. The fire department could use a little Olympic spirit though.

I got to level 6 or score 6 and I suspect it's unpassable from there. Is it? The platform seems too high up above the fire man. Anyhow, I had a blast, great platform game with a lot of fun challenges on a nice learning curve. One thing that caused me anxiety was the camera - it made me a bit uneasy when it moved after my dude stopped, and also when I looked left, the camera went left, and I still wanted to see what's going on at the right. Thank you for the fun mario-like!

Yep, you are right. It seems that jump on level 7 is impossible with the current gravity. I think you could make it if hitting the edge perfectly and being moved up by a glitch in the physics simulation, but it's still a bug... I didn't get that far when testing..

I love how it's dev for the PICO-8! Nice idea, I'm tempted to try it on my Raspberry pi arcade setup :)
Small bug: I was able to catch Covid, and get to the next level screen before getting the Game over screen, a bit frustrating xD But not a big bug.

I honestly expected a lot more "Olympic flame" type of games, but this is the first one I see around. Glad I was able to play it, feels a little bit clunky but I have that feeling with most pico-8 games. The camera movement is a bit janky but it didn't bother me too much personally. Well done ! Thank you for making this

The graphics are charming, the game play is a bit slow but that is not a problem. The music in the first levels bothered me a lot, I was praying it would change later and it did so great job!

Hey, nice entry.

The jumping is a bit clunky at times and I was sad that I had to repeat stage 1 if I died on stage 2, which made no sense to me. But otherwise, nicely done game.

Keep up the good work.

Got to stage 7 twice and couldn't pass the extinguisher near the start of the stage. Shame, would've wanted to play more stages, but lack of checkpoint and having to replay stages 1-6 again didn't appeal to me. Had fun with the game overall though.

Solid platformer! If there had been checkpoints I definitely would have played all the way through, but alas, I died 3 times at level 6. I'm used to having more air control, but I can see the appeal of committing to your jump, plus it's more physically accurate. The lack of checkpoints makes it really frustrating to take a loss towards the end. The last straw for me was when I made a really tough jump, landed on the very edge of a small platform, but then I just barely grazed one of those flying cacti and it was over. I can understand hitting a flying cactus when I'm airborne, but not when I'm on the ground! The hitboxes on those cacti are ridiculous!

I wish there was a way to fight the firemen. I was able to see some paths in the level that clearly led to certain death, and I'm not a fan of those. If I'm dead, the kindest thing you can do is kill me quickly

Cute animations and nice colors.

The art style is great! and the machanic is really fun! only thing i noticed is that after you pass a level you can still die on the Stage Completed screen, idk if that was intentional, but apart from that the game's really nice!
