Prelude to a Squish by nil4k

[raw]
made by nil4k for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

Bounce a ball over a musical landscape to move on to the next song to avoid repeating the level...

prelude.png

While the notes come from Bach, all the sound design is original. This is all original code. There is no game engine used at all, unless the web browser counts as an engine.

Submitting this to the competition even though it is technically incomplete (only started 6 hours before the deadline), you can at least just chill and listen to music with it as it stands, in an endless loop of nine well tempered clavier songs.

When you get to the end of a level, the ball returns to the top center.. you can hit the mouse or keyboard to continue to the next level. This has been updated after the deadline based on feedback to at least leave people something interesting to play with since it looks like I'm in no danger of winning anything here.

Not really much to do here but the music is nice to listen to. I eventually pressed left a little too long, shot my ball out of the screen and wasn't able to find it again.

Love the music, would like to see you finish this post LD!

The ball will reappear at the end of the level. Plan was that shooting off left would restart level and shooting off right would bounce back... hitting the bottom would restart the level as well.

- the ball doesn't seem to interact with anything other then the ground.
- arrow keys did left and right, A & D did nothing.
- music was really good
- wasn't really sure what the loop or what not was.

This is so chill and felt therapeutic to play after grinding to make a game over the weekend. I had fun absent-mindedly jumping up and down while listening to the music. I like the idea of the level being made out of the music notes too, thanks for posting!

Points for using Bach! :) Fun visualization of it too. I once saw a presentation from someone who did a similar project for their undergrad senior project where they were trying to surf on top of all the notes like this.

Sorry about A and D keys not working, I absent mindedly tested with left and right arrows and forgot to test that A and D were wired up correctly! The fix in the html source would be 'KeyA' and 'KeyD' instead of 'A' and 'D' but I don't know if it's appropriate to make that change late.

nice game idea, i wish you had time to complete it, not much we can rate you on.
you can make changes, but need to state that in your description you made them clearly (fixing bad bugs - key board re-assignments i think would be in this category)

I don't think this is in danger of winning anything so I pushed all the pending changes previously waiting for the contest end. The game is as polished as I'm ever going to make it at this point.

All the new changes as of this comment:
---------------------------------------
- Collisions + bounce sounds + falling platforms
- Level announcement overlay
- Restart level if ball hits ground or left edge
- Bounce off right edge
- Platforms all fall on level transition

@nil4k cool! it's a game now. unfortunately you can't just simply change to jam, or can you? you have still 1h to figure that out :D

I tried it before and was disappointed that it was unfinished. I still think it's a little.....rough. But I will say it has a great name, the sound is pleasant, and I'm glad you're updating it!

@merkisoft at this point, I'd rather people see what I wanted to make rather than what I made in seven hours before the deadline. The original is still there in source control in github to check out as a self-contained html file.

This was a truly chill experience! Based on what you were saying yesterday, this sounds like it was a lot of work. I persisted through a lot of restarts right at the beginning, but after that it was smooth sailing. Good job!

Neat game and use of music. I sort of wish there was a score to keep track of how many bounces I had or maybe some obstacles throughout the level.

@levidsmith added a score (and an "easy" high score for nine levels). Hitting the same platform multiple times multiplies the score, so it's now entirely possible to rack up ten thousand points on the first level if you figure out the secrets.

Would have liked if the midi notes played in key with the song rather than the actual notes! Played really well and is an awesome idea but because it's musically based I would have liked to hear more melodic notes when I bounced off them!

Good music, and a fun game. I initially thought you could cheese through the platforming by continuously hitting up while in the air, but doing so gets you no score, so you have to risk it. Nice entry!

Music was nice, and it was actually pretty fun trying to get the ball back to the top of the screen after it bounced to the bottom. Not sure if that was the intended gameplay, but I enjoyed it :)

@theseller I like your idea, though technically all the notes from ball hits are in the *KEY* of the song because they are actual notes played earlier in the song, but I really like the idea of making them musically relevant to the current chord progression, though that will be challenging music theory to implement. I will give it a try this weekend.
