Feed The Fire by Nuanda79

[raw]
made by Nuanda79 for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

The forest is a cold and dark place at night and you must “keep the fire alive” until dawn. With a small electric torch you have to search the woods looking for something combustible to throw into the bonfire to not let the flame go out.

Awesome game! We kind of got a similar idea about this theme! Our approach was much darker I guess. :-)

There are a lot of fire-based keep alive games in this jam, but this one was the must fun for me, great mood graphic but got disappointed by the minus points after burning an alien :(

Great job thoe, really solid and polished game.

Great game with awesome graphics! The flashlight mechanic is a bit annoying and I would suggest reducing the number of required clicks. Overall it could be great, polished mobile game.

I must have been doing it wrong but my flashlight would go off and not turn on again even when I clicked. Still was fun but I wasn't able to beat it on easy.

@danielrmorgan you have to press the space bar several time to recharge the flashlight. Try again and you'll surely beat it quite easely. Thanks for your feedback!

Yay! Beat it on 2nd try! I love how everyone in the comments seems to be wanting to use aliens as fuel, myself included. :joy: I think that was actually the first thing I attempted to burn.

Overall, this was a pretty cool entry! Simple mechanics that work to make a quite entertaining little experience. Very well executed overall.

Very nice game, I love the art. I also made a keep the fire alive game so I wanted to see similar games to learn from. I actually picked up a lot from this game. I loved that the "how to play" button was first which forces players to read the instructions first - very important for this type of jam. I loved the art, It looked so polished and beautiful. I loved the forest ambient sound on the main screen to immediately set the mood. I knew all this things are important but when I compare your game to mine it is suddenly so apparent what great diffrent this stuff make. I am planning on incorporating all this things in my next game jam, So thank you for the game and for the free lesson

Wow that is a really cool game, I was really impressed with the graphics. I did however find it pretty difficult to find the right items to burn. I think also a good addition would be that you can let objects go when you pick them up because sometime I picked up a shoe but a second later rememberd they cant be burned. Overall a great game!
Giulia
21. Apr 2020 · 13:36 UTC
@jordyfornow after a short time you play you can remember what are the good objects and find them faster. Besides you are right, we realized that object release is needed and we are already implementing it!

good game, i tried medium first and lost right away as i couldn't find any wood. so then i went to easy and had better luck. it's fun to play, i think as some mentioned it would be helpful to know when your light will go back on as it gets frustrating clicking continuously hoping to see again.

Fun game! I struggled at first even with all the good instructions I just wanted to burn everything lol. I tried using the sword to kill the aliens, but alas this is a peaceful game about burning things with fire. The game looks very nice and the fire animation in the middle is excellent, which is key as it is the focal point of the game. Once I really got the fire going I had to wait to add more stuff as to not waste them, I kind of wanted to make a super huge bonfire and got over the max limit. Really nice game-play overall and solid theme based concept. Good work! You can take the rest of the week off.

I like the humor with some of the objects you can find, but the recharging the flashlight mechanic felt a bit more annoying than fun. Maybe it would be better to make it so you have to move your mouse to a certain spot to recharge it?

When I started playing I was worried it was going to be quite a small game, but it turns out you really managed to make a familiar concept feel new. The graphics are very good and in combination with the sounds they give the player a good idea of how good they are doing. Perfect idea for this theme as well. Well done!

Lots of cool little things in this game. I like how the items only appear/change when you aren't looking at them with the flashlight (at least that seemed to be how it worked). I thought it was funny that you could burn guitars and books.
The fact that what was in the colored containers was randomized at the beginning didn't seem that interesting to me, mostly just annoying.
Mashing space to charge the flashlight felt good because of the sound.
Well done!

24. Apr 2020 · 07:33 UTC
Really nice and simple game. The graphics are awesome and the sounds are quite pleasant (except for the "oh no" which I don't personally like). Also I didn't quite like the fact that items are randomized every time you throw something into the fire, so you can't return to an item that you saw earlier. But it probably makes the gameplay better, so it's not a problem. Amazing game!

The flashlight mechanic was good, having to recharge it was a nice touch. There was a bit of humor with the "bad" fuels and other random stuff that would pop up. The graphics and sound were both really good.

Really great game! I managed to win and I had fun getting there! Innovative, and I like how items appear in the dark when you have your light in a different area, it adds a very dynamic feel to the game environment. Improvements: I didn't really understand where my looking light would go off (or shrink really small) and come on randomly. The graphics are really cool and, alongside crisp, well layered audio, I think it's a good entry and really well made!

Great little game, I like the concept and the art. This is pretty polished overall so congrats. I like how the items are swapped out and appear in the darkness so the player doesn't actually see it happening.

Some items that I thought should be flammable weren't, which was a little frustrating.I'm also not sure the flashlight running out was really all that engaging, but something could probably be done there to make it more fun.

Nice work overall!

The game is fun and simple. The mini game to charge the torch is a nice idea. I put the game in easy mode and i lost, i didn't find enough wood or good combustible. Maybe little difficult with the RNG. Good work you can make easily a mobile game with that.(i didn't know there a lot of aliens in the woods)

I like the simple mechanism, the gameplay is smooth and I enjoy the challenge of it, overall nice game. Anyway, I think you should consider make more levels and add different factors to the game, for example a different mode where the player have to survive as long as possible, not just until 7 am. Your game can be developed more.

@sandra-martinez that's a good idea, we are already thinking of enriching the game for a future release. Thanks for feedback!

25. Apr 2020 · 11:30 UTC
it reminded me of that Simpson's episode where Bart and Homer are in the woods looking for the alien, and the alien was mr Burns :D

It's a good choice to not put the alien in the fire. But I wish there was more to do. Just grabbing stuff and put on the fire, once you drain out all the possible objects is not a engaging core-loop mechanic.

SFX are a bit annoying overall (the only two I liked were "Oh noo" and the fire sounds)...
Graphics is nice and cute.

You should tell somewhere how to recharge the battery of the light torch. but the way you recharge, feels a bit ... off. I would prefer as collecting batteries around and... don't know, mount them in the torchlight ? As I distractor/minigame inside the game.

Well, it was a jam, so the scope was small enough, and I actually had fun playing it :) Thanks for the entry

This was a simple concept well executed. The music was a little repetitive and got annoying very quickly, and I didn't like that I had to figure out what was 'combustible' and what wasn't by trial and error, but those are my only real complaints. Nice little game for a weekend's work.

Throwing aliens into the fire should ignite it more (or turns it green)^^ Game works quite well, it is a bit simple but quite fun. I know there are a lot of keep the fire alive games, but I think i would say in the innovation ratings I would say it fits its genre (so it's not negative for me).

Hey, nice game you got there! At first it was pretty hard, but I learnt what to burn and what to ignore (why do you hate guitars so much) and eventually beat the hard level!

Graphics and music is good, the different size torch for the different levels make a whole lot difference, and I like how the different things have a separate effect on the fire. It wasn't completely clear when new items would appear, but eventually I started burning shoes just to get some new ones. Tactics, innit.

Quite enjoyed that - easy to understand but took a while to beat hard. Well done.

Nice game! Good idea with the flashlight and executed well. The hard level was indeed touch xD. I tried different tactics, and it required a great deal of concentration as the levels progressed since the flashlight became smaller and smaller. Good and art and sounds too.

Maybe instead of pitch black, a grey background with outline of trees can be better, I guess in terms of eye strain. But overall well done!

The game feels nice and is pretty polished. I liked the clear visuals and audio feedback.
The gameplay is very simple, yet correct balance makes it interesting. The lamp battery mechanic is also a very good idea. Simple and breaks the rythm a bit when needed.
