Why Baby? by Chris Rock

[raw]
made by Chris Rock for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Is your god a T-Rex? Is it hungry? Is it in a vat? Do you have to keep feeding it and refilling its vat before it dies? Then this game is about you! I just have one more question: Why Baby?

header.png

This is our second submission to Ludum Dare! Aside from bringing back Rory's AMAZING art, we have Chris and Vinnie back as Devs. This time around we have Erin writing the dialogue and Ashton on music! Enjoy!!!

Controls: WASD or Arrow Keys to move. 'e' or 'space' to interact. Also supports gamepads!!

Ouch, Serpens is kind of rough with its language, haha! :D The game was a bit hard to understand at first, but great graphics kept me playing. Thank you for sharing the source code, too! :)

This was cute! Really liked the art. Got a bit hectic and I wasn't sure how to do fertilizer, but it was fun.

Love the game! Simple, but fun! Only feedback, the furtilizer says 5 Embroja and Nektare. I though I had to supply 5 Embroja and 1 Nektare. I later discovered you had to give 5 of each

Really cute, done with well-made lines and humor, and good god - the graphics! They're simply amazing, and push the gameplay to be a whole lot more fun. The gameplay in itself was really fun on its own, and the time management and mini farms were just great
Love this game, would probably buy if I saw it on steam

I liked the writing a lot . Wish there was a way to just pull the plug on the rex or maybe feed him rotten salad.

This was fantastic. Kept me invested for a really long time until I beat it. Took me a few tries but the difficulty was just right. Love it.

Today I learned : being insulted by a baby t-rex is a thing oO
Really fun aesthetic and idea
The gameplay is basic but works. My biggest criticism would be using a red filter for hunger. It took me time at the beginning to understand what it meant and it ruins the beautifull graphics when it gets too red :/

Still, one of the best game I played in this jam. Well done !

Edit : is it actually winnable ? It seems like the water is draining way too fast when the dino gets huge

Love the game! It was really addictif.
It took me a bit to understand how to buy and use the upgrade but overall it was really enjoyable.
The graphics are nice and the dialogues too !
Great work

Oh man, I think the test of a good game is when you have that "A-ha!" moment, and this game gave that to me in full force. This game does a really good job of teaching the player to manage their resources. Having a nagging reptilian overlord sassing you while you're trying to keep track of what is ready for harvesting and what needs tending was a really great experience. The static noises whenever Serpens got angry were really fitting for a little water temper-tantrum, and I really liked it! I think the UI could've used a little bit of work, and I would've liked a sprint button + more things to do. Overall, great job!

I liked the art, and the dinosaur was a turd, but in the end it got a little to hard to balance the food and liquid.

I really enjoyed playing the game. The courses and names kinda bothered me, mostly because I was playing with my son, so the translation had to be softened on the fly... hehe
The resources administration was a little hard to keep up, but I have to confess that I am not keen on this type of game.
The red screen when he is dying seemed to be only time related and not according to the life meter, but it is probably my fault... hehe
Maybe a sound feedback once each station is ready for the next interaction it would be helpfull.
Nice arts and sounds, btw. Awesome team work here. Congrats!

Solid game! The typing sounds are a bit annoying, and the dialog could be better non-blocking. Would not keep alive a god this much of an ass though. No wonder everybody left him.

Artistically interesting game. I like the environment you created. The interactions feel a little 'choiceless' as it felt like I was just running in circles, but I still played for a good while enjoying all the little quips he had for my incompetance. If you could find a little more ways to give the player choices, this has some potential.

Great entry!

Amazing fun game! The art is incredible (the dino is adorable), but the loop on the music is too short sadly and gets a bit annoying after a time sadly, but overall I really liked it!

Wow, first let me just say thank you on behalf of the whole team for so many people playing our game! We APPRECIATE your feedback SO MUCH!

@hannahelena @maxathon @billehbawb @karas @connor0wolf @jacobwing @tripl3m @ad0rian @r2isabot We're so happy you enjoyed the game! We put our heart into it and it means the world that people are playing and enjoying it.

@quarter-up-studios @pxgluz @polifev @casual-dutchman Thanks for the feedback about the Fertilizer. The way it's supposed to work is that if you trade 5 Embroja and 5 Nektare to the grinder at the bottom of the screen, you get 1 Fertilizer. If you give a plot Fertilizer while it's growing, it becomes a SUPER plot and will grow much quicker and yield more Embroja! I can see how the explanation is not too clear. This part was a little rushed, since originally we were going to have a whole third resource and a building mechanic. Would have had a lot more instruction as part of the building UI, but had to cut that part for time.

@debuggerpls @deadboygames Ha ha, yeah Serpens is a mean lil' guy. We thought it'd be fun to make you go against your instinct. "Wait... WHY am I helping this jerk?"

@okkolobr @joaquinm @silurus @digitom @majadroid Thank you so much! We're so glad you enjoy the art! Rory's art is the real star of the show in my book!

@abb1x We were actually talking about Mewtwo during the design process!!!

@khud0 @lucisaurus @fabrito @yscik Yeah, I hear you about Serpens can get a bit rough. Even my wife was saying "Wow, he's THAT mean?" I'd like to add a toggle in the future for those that would like to share with younger players or those that would prefer cleaner language

@sadpanda @adinimys Thanks for the feedback about the redscreen, I agree completely! We wanted something to keep things hectic and really make you sweat when Serpens got hungry, and Rory made some really cool Red versions of the pod, but we were running low on time and I had to throw that filter up there. Definitely something we'd adjust with a bit more time!

@adinimys @theqiwiboy Yeah, the difficulty is pretty rough. We wanted it to be tough, but it might have ended up a bit TOO tough. We got to the point on the timeline where we said "Ok, it's winnable, good enough" and moved on from balance. Keep at it and you'll crack it for sure!

@bitdecay Thanks for the feedback about the gameplay, we would've liked there to be a bit more complexity, as well. As we mentioned with the fertilizer, we were hoping to have a third resource that would've have involved an entirely separate building mechanic where you would've had more options for upgrades, but we quickly realized we needed to simplify to make the deadline. We kept the fertilizer in to give some variety, but we would definitely want to add more options in a full game!

Thank you all again, from the bottom of my heart! Don't let Serpens know that I'm slacking off to write all this out, he's a bit of a grump! There is just one more thing. There's this nagging question I've been meaning to ask you all, but I just can't remember it.... Hmm, oh well. I'm sure it'll come to me...

Well that was fun. I would say if you were to continue this I wish I could see a Emperors New Groove character arch for the dino. That would be amazing. Great Job!

Such an amzazing job ! Really impressive and fun to play through ! (As a non native English speaker, I did have some trouble understanding everything right away and ended up feeding him all my Embrija so I couldn't make more grow after x)

Damn, that was tough. I couldn't keep him alive once he got as big as the vat, by the time I'd run the circuit around the room to gather resources, the screen turned red.

Love the art and the story!

The art is wonderful, and I enjoyed being berated by a space T-rex, though like others I did struggle and eventually died, probably because I didn't figure out how to make fertilizer
