Blobula ex nihili

At the start there was nothing, and then, the cursor said "press the left trigger" and then, pixels were produced...

Caveats

  • Use a controller, otherwise it's awsd and arrow keys!
  • Resolution is limited to exactly 1420x1000
  • I developed the game on linux, yet I do not provide a linux download.

Playing

At the bottom of the page, there is a link to download the game but if you are on windows, you may as well click here

Game

When I heard the theme, this came to my mind within a tenth of a second (by "this", I mean the gameplay mechanic of dropping pixels into the player).

You are a blob of pixels, and you have a cursor that spawns pixels, those pixels draw (sorry for the pun) themselves toward you. The more pixels you are made of, the more dangerous the world around you is. You can't win, but you can try to beat your best score.

Dev comment

This is my first game jam! I decided to go for löve2d because it has a reputation of being easy and I used a library (in Rust) inspired by it. My experience is the following: lua is way too imperative for my taste (not even a ternary operator, wow)! I compensated by using the fun.lua library, but definitively, it wasn't enough.

Let's get to the meat of it: I decided to use HC.lua for physics detection, because it had support for polygons. However, it turned out the library was broken! I forked the library and patched it (it seems like some of the documented functions either never were implemented or used by anyone) I used the git submodules system to vendor-in my patch and use it for both distribution and development. Well, at the end, that was not fun!

Also game dev is hard! I summoned more trigonometry efforts to make this game than passing university math exams, I can tell you this.

I'm kinda happy with the end result. At one point, I imagined having neat music effects mix in with the particles to give it a real dream-like ambiance, but.. time and all that.

Such a cool idea! Minimalistic, but I like it. Sadly no sound but that's ok. I recommend you check out and rate some games, otherwise people will most likely not find your game and it's definitely worth a look!
