It goes on and on and on Dungeon by FancyReckless

[raw]
made by FancyReckless for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Simple dungeon puzzle game inspired by old game "Blek". - Swipe/drag across game map to launch your warrior. - The goal of the game is to kill all the monsters and collect all the loot. - Your movement tiles depend on amount of gold you have. Coins increase it - There are "stronger" monsters on some levels. For those you need to collect armor/weapon first. - Hit "Restart" to restart the level.

Here is a weapon level you need for each monster. Basically if you see a weapon in the level, there will be higher level monster in that level and you will need to pick it up first. Untitled.png

Unfortunately I made this game for the sake of participation, as I had nearly no time this weekend, but I hope you will still enjoy the concept and few levels I made (18 in total). Things I did not make: - Sounds - Visual effects - Menu :/

* Edit: I had a bug where you sometimes won't get enough coins to beat later levels. Added one coin and documented this change as per jam rules. *

I really like the general idea - so much that I'll look up Blek right after I wrote this. I didn't vote for graphics since (if I understood correctly) you didn't create them yourself? That aside it's a good game. The lack of sound actually didn't hurt, the old-school graphics gave it a "my machine has no sound card"-type of feel which I personally enjoyed. A little more explanation would've been nice though, I played through it and am still not sure why sometimes I can destroy an enemy while at other times it just destroys me. Probably has to do with the side I attacked from? Or is it depending on whether or not I have collected the loot before?

@andrea-ancona yeah, it's my bad. I had 2 versions uploaded and the older one (where this level was unbeatable) was left playable. Removed it so that it loads correct one.

@shanzhai thanks for feedback, really appreciate it. I thought monster separation might be the problem, I'll post little explanation in description

I remember blek! Enjoyed your take on the genre. It definitely got interesting when the levels starting allowing for longer inputs.

Neat game! However the word "swipe" really confused me at the start, maybe some further explanation of the mechanic would be nice. I just kept doing a short swipe (like on a phone) which meant that the knight would just go straight so I could beat the first level for a while.

Blek ported to phones makes all kinds of sense, just add some cosmetic dlc and buy a lambo. I use that kenny tileset for like all my prototyping I love it.

Great game! Completed it with joy. As mentioned above, I didn't understand why I could kill one type of enemies and another killed me. Also I think it would be nice if on restart everything you got at that level would be discarded. On some levels I just could farm couns and weapon power. Hope you will continue working on this, it's a really nice concept.

Nice game. I really like the graphics and the mood.
Would be nice with a fast forward function, at least in the early easy stages.
On PC it was a bit hard to drag straight diagonals but it worked after some practice :)

I had fun with it :)

Wow, our game was also inspired by Blek, what a coincidence!

Also, were you in Miziziziz's Jam too? lol
We made a game with those graphics for that Jam too.

This was really fun to play. I managed to finish it and this felt really great.
Would love some retro music that matches the awesom graphics.
The levels and the plan for them was really nice!

Really nice game! I've never played *blek* but the mechanics you have put in your game works really well. The graphics fits well with the the gameplay. If I would add little things it would be (but I understand it was not possible with the time you had):
* Some simple music (2 channels oldschool chiptune) and sound FX
* A kind of intro/tutorial level with a demonstration of a "diagonal" swipe, because I did'nt understood at first I could make some long swaps with different directions
* A time/score thing. Some levels can be achieved with a lot of different strategies, it could be great to reward a player that tries to fine the most optimal way to achieve the lvl.

I really liked it, good job for a ludum dare game made with "no time".

(I did'nt rate the humor, because it does'nt seem to be the point of the game)

Really like the idea, I did seem to end the final few puzzles with 'sweep the whole row and go down one' but the concept is really nice. Good scope, nice simple art that gets the point across, really enjoyed it.

Thanks everyone, really didn't expect so much feedback! I really appreciate feedback, that will let me work on things I can improve and all the compliments that will motivate me to finish this game after the jam. I didn't participate in Miziziziz's jam, but I like to see his videos and get inspired by it.

I want to second the idea that a little more explanation would have helped. I was stuck on a level until I came here and saw @nitero's comment. Knowing that I could move in more than one direction saved the day (I will say it doesn't help that my mouse is having issues, so maybe I'd have figured it out otherwise?).

Had fun and completed all the levels! I think the last level bugged out for me and each time I restarted all the enemie slowly changed the poison(?) block. It still let me pass though so all good :D
There's room to explore here with some more world obstacles (pits you could fall in, spikes you can run into, etc) and could be cool to see the addition of multiple "lives" so you can use two+ people at the sametime.
I'll mirror what others above said about some sound enhancing this entry, but a fantastic game! Great job!

Pretty neat mechanic, I haven't seen Blek til you mentioned it and yours is a theme more up my alley. The execution is a bit rough around the edges as you mostly try and angle and hope for the best, but it's understandable since you have a short LD this time around. The concept and prototype is still interesting though.

Where would you have liked to take this game if you had the time?

@peachtreeoath thanks.
I first planned this to be something like a tactical RPG with multiple different units and health points. The unit counter is still visible at the top from that idea and if you hack it, you can summon that main unit many times.
