LDJAM46 - Keep it alive

1st text.png

Introducing a short management and narrative game, chill music and environnement.

idle+tree+standsandarrows.gif

The tree needs 3 different type of ressources, but be careful, too much or not enough of any of the resources will result in making the tree die.

Two modes are available, one story mode and one endless mode. We highly recommand you to try the story mode in priority, it's not long, we promise:) We hope you enjoy !

avr.-21-2020 18-18-53.gif

We couldn't try the game on Linux, all feedbacks all welcome. Also, all feedbacks are welcome

Please play in 16:9 resolutions, while 4:3 is not working at all ! Thanks !

Beautiful game, well polished. I really liked the simple time management gameplay. Music and graphics set a wonderful atmosphere. One thing that would help with gameplay might be to have a little icon pop up when you are near something you can interact with.
Overall nice game!

Well, I finished the story mode and it was really beautiful... :)
The pixel art its really nice, the music is discret and lovely, it was really relaxing and not too much stressful. it was really a lovely game that I'm happy to have tried, very decent, well done :)
I would have put the controls to the arrow keys too! But other than that it was really pleasant, well done! :)

Glad to hear that we managed to make you feel like that ! After 3 intense arcade jam games we would make a relaxing and simple experience.
Did you picked the flower?

@no-grapes-games
You are totally right, we prioritized other aspects but a feedback on when you can/can't interact would be really helpful.

I love the art-style, sfx and the idea. It's just wonderful.
If I were you I'd add an interactive menu so you can
(for instance) control the character there to learn the controls.
Overall 5 stars from me. Also, if you had some more time I'd add a music
to change every time you are in this lounge room above. It's not hard to make.
It's just Trigger Collider2D and Input. Great job guys! <3 I love the game!
It's the best one I've seen so far.

Thanks! The interactive jukebox was an early idea but our composer did have trouble finding ideas for music and we didn't had enough assets to really make it... Our artist would love to do that, she's pretty thrilled to hear that x)

Alright, so everything about this is just really beautiful. The music, the art and the story was very moving. Adding to that, the gameplay is crisp and engaging even if a little short. The addition of endless mode is a nice touch for that reason! My favourite so far by a good stretch.

Some really amazing game you made there. The graphics and music are amazing.

@corbak how did you manage to keep the tree alive? xD With pace of the player I could not could not meet any of the trees needs.

I've seen a lot of "keep the plant alive" games this jam (and even some last jam!), but this is by far the most beautiful one I've seen. I am astounded that all of this only took 3 days. I really appreciate giving the user a list of controls and the fact that there are multiple game modes is awesome. I wish there were some kind of feedback to let us know what we can interact with since I never could find the fertilizer, even using the plant care instructions here on the LD site. I see where it is but I don't know where to press E in order to collect the purple things outside, take them inside to make fertilizer, or feed the tree. Despite my personal shortcoming and inability to finish the game I really enjoyed it. The music is really soothing.

@klaus-peter
It maybe a bug :/ The game should be really simple. Sadly I can't reproduce it... when I play i must sometimes just wait and do nothing to not kill the tree. But, well, i developed the game ^^'

@ellenary
Glad to hear that you loved it...
And so sad to hear that you didn't make it to the end :(
Did you play the game in 16:9 format? 4:3 is known to totally break triggers / collisions resulting in not being able to interact with anything. Maybe try different resolutions could help.
If not, you should just press E key at the right edge of the map to collect minerals, then press E key at the "fertilizer machine" (left side of the tree). Let us know if you managed to fix that ! The trigger is pretty large.

@eryph Oh, hey what do you know I played it in 4:3. Here I thought I was just able to float along because I was in space. Oops. I'll definitely try other resolutions and see what happens. Thank you for letting me know!

The systems were so effective here! Time management games are always stressful for me, and this one was no exception--but it's well put together. The interplay of space (needing to cross paths often) and time (the fertilizer requiring two "waiting" periods and a long traversal vs. a single period for the others) worked well in tandem. Awesome job!

Absolutely insane, the things you got done in the time of this jam is so ridicilous. The art direction and graphics fit into each other perfectly, and the game couldn't be more pleasant for the eye. The also adds such a huge amount of mood and the *atmosphere* (see what i did there) is so so so good.

The game was kinda difficult at the beginning but then I did the unthinkable and decided to check "How to" which obviously just helped me out a lot. Also the whole story is really beautiful and it was easy to just keep playing. I have no idea as to how in the heck you also made and endless, and altogether the game feels so whole and polished, what an AMAZING entry! Congrats on this submit, please be proud..

A beautiful little game. Honestly not sure how you'd expand on it because I think it was perfectly formed. Wonderful graphics and music, and a very effective story (really impressive how it was so minimal but so effective). I thought the three elements were well balanced against each other and mechanically varied enough to keep it interesting for the duration of the story mode. I didn't play the endless mode for long because I thought the gameplay did start to become a bit repetitive there. The story mode was just brilliant though.

Thanks for the heads up about the resolutions! :) I'm on a 5:4 display here and yes, Unity's resolution chooser is still not great...

This is short but sweet. A perfect example of a game being more than the sum of its parts. If you strip away all of the aesthetics and polish here you get a very boring game, but the music and visuals come together to make it a much more enjoyable experience. The ending was not exactly groundbreaking but I felt that it was appropriate.

Really the highlight here is in all of the little details. Things like the music filtering out when you're outside the ship, the various animations, even the smooth camera panning contributes to the look and feel of the game. As I mentioned, the game loop itself isn't super thrilling but you sell the game with everything else. Great job!

@ddrkirbyisq
Thanks !
We really think that details make a great game ! After 3 jam entries which were intense arcade games, we tried to create a relaxing gameplay experience that could be considered "boring", but wrapped with a lot of details and a short story. We thought alot about this subject but we thought that a more complicated gameplay would have been a bad idea, and we would'nt work as much on details.
We are so glad that it worked on you and so many others, and it proves to us that the game design isn't always about quantity !

This is such a wonderful game! The graphics are really nice. I love the moon base look. The music is awesome. The gameplay is simple, but there's a perfect balance between all three resources. There's always something to do, but it never feels boring or unfair. You actually connect to the tree you need to look after! And I was deeply touched by the ending.

Thank you for this great piece of art!

This is so well made... loved it. Beautiful example of story-telling in only few words. I played without looking at the tutorial and everything was intuitive and could be understood straight away with what was drawn / the discret UI. The art is fantastic, and music was relaxing, it made for a wonderful experience. Amazing job on this.

PS : It would be great to add your screenshots and text on the Itch.io page as well :)
