BUBBLE BOY by NEKORUMA

[raw]
made by NEKORUMA for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

i made this little tamagochi simulator for ludum dare 46: theme "keep it alive".

It is my first finished project, when reading the topic of the ludum dare I thought about the tamagotchis that I played as a child in the 90s.

I was also inspired by the Nintendo game & watch, obvious by its design :D

I have done it with Construct 2, the graphics are made with Photoshop and Aseprite. For sounds use SFXR, GSCC and Melody Raiser.

Although it is a small and simple game, I hope you like it! :D

Nice and simple Tamagotchi like game, its funny all those stats like how it needs even oxygen. Goes very fast on every stat.

When the theme was first announced I was wondering if I'd see a Tamagotchi-inspired game! The visuals and sound are great, even if the gameplay is a bit simplistic.

I really liked your game, it reminds me of the old days with tamagotchis as everyone has said before. It did get a little repetititive after a while but it was still enjoyable!

I loved this so much, gave me some major nostalgia. Would be nice to see a fuller version with some more features but this is perfect for a jam game. Nice music and sounds too.

Wow, a great little fast tamagotchi experience! I really liked the graphics, with a high res console and very well done low res screen (play it fullscreen people!). I liked the console design, with a shape reminiscent of the digimon mini consoles that I had as a kid. Also the sound was very good.
I really have no complaints! A true and tried formula, but well executed!

I like how you took a typically slow-paced pet simulator and made it play quicker. The whole style is great; my favorite animation (other than death) was the bathtub. The music was really good too. My only critique is that it seems unloseable if you play quick enough, but it's hard to balance everything in 48 hours! Great job. Thumbs up!

This is awesome!
Gameplay is a bit simple, but I think it's perfect for the game you did.

One thing for you to think about if you plan to improve this game in the future: at some point I stopped looking at the animation and just keep clicking the buttons. I didn't even have to look at the status bar for each of the actions. Just click. What would be a good reward for the player in order to look at the screen? No idea, honestly, but I think if you can figure out, you'll have a great game in your hands (pun intended).

Great work! One of my favorites :)

I found the gameplay quite uninteresting, but then again, tamagochis were always pretty boring huh?
But the style, art, music, aesthetic etc. were absolutely top notch. Also very closely tied to the theme, which I feel many of the submissions are only very loosely linked.

@kythehuman If it was difficult for me to be balanced and fast, I will have to adjust it for future versions. Thanks for your comment!

@hhsaez Thanks for your comment! I will have to think or reframe what you are telling me. I don't know what would be a good reward for them to look at the screen ... maybe there were more animations for each action and they were random? Or maybe needs vary in speed? I'm not sure, I'll have to think about it. also thanks for telling me this, I hadn't thought about it.

@gurglesprain Yes, frankly, tamagotchis are not very interesting these days ... but I did it for the topic, it reminded me of these devices and it was also out of nostalgia, thanks for your comment!

@keanutah thanks !! yes is very repetitive the music , but but I thought it would be more realistic like that, like the real tamagotchis hahhah also thanks for the suggestion, I think that for a future version I will put different types of music that will change depending on the state of the tamagotchi or perhaps short loops for each activity

Awesome game! the sound effects and music were really good!
21. Apr 2020 · 03:17 UTC
I like the concept and the graphics were pretty cool! I think the gameplay did get tiring a bit quickly, and the music took away from rather than added to the game. (Also, this might be just my computer, but the game dramatically slowed down a little while in and eventually crashed my browser.) I think the concept could be extended with more complex gameplay.

Great work!

This was great. The sounds and animation were really nostalgic of a Tamagochi. Same with the poops filling up the screen! Did I miss a score? I only played twice because I didn't think there was any high score to try to beat. Still, a good little game

I also considered making a "virtual pet" game. You're is much more polished than mine would have been, I like the contrast between the simple game-in-game graphics compared to the detailed console it's on.

At first I thought I was looking at the title screen, and realized while looking for the start button that I was already playing. Just a minor setback, I was able to jump right in and catch up./

There is something I love very much about how this game looks and sounds. I can practically picture holding it and playing it. I adored these kinds of things as a kid and you've captured it perfectly.

The gameplay itself is just clicking a button when the corresponding bar gets smaller, just with a nice coat of paint. But in that same thought, if Tamagotchi were made in 48 hours, I'm sure it would be very much the same. I don't know if they could have done this will with the restrictions you had.

This was a joy to play.

Thanks for stopping by and playing my submission, leading me here to your one. Nice to see another Tamagotchi inspired one, but in your case finished into playable game - respect. You have all the mechanics and much more I wished for and didn't managed to implement

Music is repetitive but sets the correct mood, visually looks great and crossing-over with G&W is not bad idea at all :)

A nicely made, well rounded game. I loved the aesthetic of the game with the pusedo handhold game acting as the interface and the background. Gave it a really strong feeling of being an old school game. I did find the repeating music a little annoying after a while and I was glad it was really easy to turn it off from within the game itself.

One minor tweak would be the colour of the red for the fake "nintendo" logo, if it wasn't as bright red and more like the border colour it would stand out against the grey background a lot better.

Loved the reminder of playing tamagotchi in the playground with friends in school! Really sweet and charming game with nice audio and visual feedback.
I would say it is a little repetitive though but I'm guessing there wasn't enough time to add any other features! Maybe something simple like sometimes he gets sick then certain stats will drop quicker and you have to help him get better. Or adding baby, teen, adult and elderly type stages like tamagotchi would change it up a little even if the activity animations are kept the same.
Overall, a great game! Well done!

Simple and fun, really a nostalgia hit. Of course I believe that it could be improved by some depth, or at least embracing the long-term play and commitment a real tamagochi inspired.

Sure the time limitations on a compo-jam would make it very hard, so instead just add a bit more of flavor, like an age counter (maybe go up every 5 minutes?) and with it some things may change (while age between 1 and 6, fun would decrease faster, being more important to play often, ig.) or even having the actions you perform have multiple effects (you could have "dine" and that give lots of food, or snack, giving a small amount of food and fun ig.)

Anyways, congrats on your project!

Hey, the audiovisuals are really nice. Feels polished.

I just wished that the game had some difficulty to it.

I felt like I was just spamming the buttons and it was totally enough to keep it alive.
No real challenge to it.

But remembering those things from my childhood, it was about the right timing to put it out of your pocket and do something with it. I don't think it's really translatable to a computer game.

But all in all, it shows that you've put some effort into making it feel nice.

Well done.

Top marks for theme! And hello to another Construct 2 user! I've seen one other so far. :ok_hand:

It's simple but well done. The only thing that'd make it even better would be the tamagotchi style evolution, and a different death anim, maybe based on what you neglected the most ( if no air, no food, no fun, too much poop etc! )

The music and graphics here were great, this was a really good recreation of tamagotchis!
