Despair, foolish mortal! For you shall never Escape from Arachnea!

Escape from Arachnea is a retro rail shooter made for Ludum Dare 47. Choose your weapon and battle an onslaught of spiders to claim your place at the top of the leaderboard! All you need to do is aim with your mouse.

The theme for Ludum Dare 47 is "Stuck in a loop". Behold the many loops of stuckness in this game:

  • The player is forever stuck moving in a loop in the center of the screen!
  • There is a big spiderweb in the background. Spiderwebs are sticky and full of loops!
  • Though it looks like the player is moving toward the outside of the web, this is but an illusion! He is well and truly stuck.
  • The developer actually remembered to turn on looping for the music this time!
  • This game was made in 58 hours by Wesley, Trevor, Greg, and Brian Humphreys. The entire game was created by the team during the game period with the exception of the leaderboard, which was created by Carmen T. Nice game. Good to hear some actual music after playing so many games with just simple chiptune sound effects (mine included). I really like the leaderboard too. It gives the game a lot more replayability.

LOL wow you kept me going with that high-score list! I was determined to hit first place (even though someone else will probably do better than me)... Great game!

@zypo So, you dare to knock me off the top of the leaderboard and then come in here to brag?

JK--Congratulations, dude! You've got brutal reflexes and mouse skills. I'm glad that you had fun.

I like it :) It's fun to play and individual runs don't go on for too long, perfect for a jam. The fact that health is represented by the glowing net in the background is really cool. It does does a better job at conveying urgency than any health bar ever could. And the backing track, voice announcements and leaderboard are also pretty neat

The weapons appear to be surprisingly well balanced, which is really impressive. None of them felt underpowered compared to the others.

The enemies also compliment each other nicely. The small green ones regularly force you to switch your focus over to them from whatever you were firing at.

I feel like there are some more opportunities for juice, e.g. screenshake, more sounds, maybe some kickback in the direction you fire, things like that. You probably don't have to worry about that too much, though, there is already plenty going on :)

I like it! A lot of the weapons feel very good, and the mechanic of making the enemies smaller as they approach really switches up the typical strategy for this type of game.

This game reminds me of my basement.. Spiders everywhere ;)

very nicley done :) THe music is catchy and the graphic looks great. I don't have anything to complain about actually.

Extra bonuspoint for implementing an online high score list :)

Really cool entry. The online scoreboard is a great addition. The different weapons are also good for replayability. I'm will be definitely coming back to this one :) Good job!

Had fun with it! Reached the leaderboard!
It needs a bit clearer communication between the game and the player.
What adds points/speed, how much helath I have and so on

Had a lot of fun with this. Different weapons are cool, the color change of the BG and the speed it moves really do a lot for the immersion. The music a just the kickass icing on the cake.
Could not find a slider for sound/music (Did I miss it?) Great entry!

The music in this game is really good, and I liked the techno/retro vibes from the background as it changed with low-health. High score system was a nice touch, though it would be cool to see where I placed even if I didn't make the top 10. We'll see how long YOURNAME can reign supreme :)

I really love this entry. I love the elegant design and mechanics. The fact that each enemy has its own strenghts and weaknesses make the decision interesting. The leaderboard is a cool addition.

I liked the background, sound effects and having different weapons. At certain points it felt that I couldn't defend at all haha

I hate those small green spiders! Nice little game. I like the fact that there are multiple weapons, it adds to the replay value! I would have liked to have a crosshair to make it clear where you aim. The music was cool too. The only criticism I have is the disparity of the graphisms between the pixel art of the spiders and the non pixel art of the background. Good work overall!

Good game with a arcade feel with a bonus of a high score table. Kind of reminds me of a reversed version of Tempest. Great job!

This was great; volume was a bit high, but the gameplay was spot on (e.g. with the increasing difficulty at a good rate) and the options for different weapons was a really good idea.

We played this on stream ([twitch.tv/saphirako](https://www.twitch.tv/saphirako)) and had a grand ol' time!

**What went well:**
* Visual feedback for the health is smart
* Different weapon design is very creative
* Music sounds great and the SFX fit nicely with the visuals

**What might need a second look:**
* Having some sort of visual indication of where I'm aiming might be useful
* Having the ability to control audio-levels would be nice to have

Someday, maybe, I'll manage to hit the leader board. 😭 Excellent contribution to the jam. Congratulations!

[Thanks for being the guinea pig on our disaster of a stream!](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/765835341?t=00h15m25s) I actually had a lot of fun with this one. The concept of your score being tied to the speed of the game was super novel, and I loved being able to choose my weapon (even though I kinda screwed myself by picking the shotgun, lol)

I also loved the visual flair with your health being indicated by the color of the background. All-in-all, nice job!

Well made game and it was fun to play! The addition of leaderboards was a nice touch as well. Could have used a bit more enemy variety and guns to spice it up a little bit but overall very good!
