Roller Coaster Defender is a game made for Ludum Dare 47 with the theme: "Stuck in a Loop"

You control a train stuck on a roller coaster's vertical loop, you must fight against waves of enemies taking time in between the attacks to buy weapons and extra cars, protect your main car at all cost!

The source code is available at: https://github.com/LuisEduardoR/LudumDare47

This game was made from scratch in 48 hours, all code, art and sounds were made by me during this period. I used Unity as my game engine, GIMP and Krita for the art and Audacity and Bosca Ceoil for the sound effects and music.

Instructions

  • Left and Right Arrows: move the car
  • Spacebar: fire all weapons
  • P: Pause the game
  • After a wave is finished you will have acces to a store.
  • In the store you can repair, buy new cars and upgrade your weapons.
  • Your main car is always automatically repaired but it can't be upgraded!
  • If you lose your main car you lose the game!
  • If you lose a car in the middle of your train you lose all cars that come after it!

✔️Although at first I didn't quite like the shooting/movement mechanic I found that as I spent more time with it I got better, hitting shots as a curve around the hoop - lining up the enemies perfectly, and this gave me a sense of accomplishment.

✔️The entire came from the controls to the main premise were very intuitive allowing me to start playing straight away.

✔️Good progression system with the upgrades.

➖I feel some of the art could improved.

Pretty steep learning curve, I had trouble finishing the first wave to be honest. The control scheme is definitely fresh but it was little rough to get used to for me. The graphics are good and so is the music.

I didn't realise how difficult this game would be until I noticed that the car moves with acceleration, the music can be repetitive and the graphics could do with some work but I like the concept and the upgrade system.

Took me much longer to get through the first round than any of the following, so maybe the first round should be made a bit easier? Overall though once I got some more cars it got pretty fun!

This was a really creative take on mechanics involving the theme. Although it was a little hard to get the hang of the acceleration, when I got all carts and weapons the progression became smoother. Overall, pretty nice submission, good job!

Interesting mechanic, it's something new yet familiar, so I was able to get better in this game in a matter of minutes. The idea is neat, and that's cool that you made the control scheme very simple. Great game!

Total points 46850! In the end it felt like the second upgrade was better than the third? Distance over damage I think.
