I couldn't go out of the very fist zone (the little cave with the lantern)... a friend of mine tested it and could play well, i don't really know why i can't. When i jump, i don't jump as high as him :/
(if it's useful : i tested it on firefox, normal and private navigation)
In any case, i love your animation for Pit !

@kankrelat yeah that's a bug we noticed too. Never had jumps as low as that though really sorry you couldn't play. :( We only saw jumps get bigger which isn't as game breaking.

Nice game! I loved the art and the animations! Must have been tough to do! Anyways, I missed some saving points, it would be nice, because the user could get a little unmotivated by having to go back to the beginning. Well, again, nice game!

I have a couple of questions:

1) Who hid all these apples in a cave? and why?

2) How do you train your horse to become a spelunker?

This was a fun and unique experience. There were some things that I noted: the hit box for the horse seemed a lot smaller than the horse and being a big animal it sort of felt like maybe it didn't fit in the whole cave environment.

That said, I enjoyed it. The apple indicator in the top left urged me to keep trying to find all the apples.

Great work !
The animations of the horse are pretty smooth, the environments are quite pleasing. The collectibles make the whole game more enjoyable and more replayable, because they give you an incentive to explore the whole game, and it feels really rewarding to collect them.
Overall, really nice experience !

The animation on the horse is amazing, you dont get enough credit for that, especially when you stop the movement animation amazing. In terms of theme its not really keeping the horse alive I mean you put the horse in situations it may die in... Also it's a slippery on the platforms though which is frustrating but I replayed at least 4 times got half the apples but kept dying. Great work.

Nice graphics style and the music together with it made it quite an relaxing game. The horse idle look was a nice touch, didn't think I could 'die' in the game, just before getting most of the apples.. died baaa. Good work though! :)

Very fun game! Congrats to the team. The art style is pretty good and the animations suit that same art style.

Things that can improve:
- Caverns are too tight to a horse haha
- Collisions are quite strange
- Audio are very buggy. Maybe some problem with Coroutines or Update usage

As I said, the game is a lot fun! I play this dozens of times before write this comment :D

@mikabrytu Hey! Thank you for your comment!
The caverns at the end are definitely a little too tight but we wanted to make them as small as we could to carry across the feel of a mine and the reality of the tight spaces a pit pony would squeeze through! So I think we can work on this for a future update after the jam :)
The audio is very buggy and was added last minute, thank you we will look into this to resolve. <3 xxx

oh man, there seems to be something wrong :( I booted it up and cannot jump high enough to get out of the starting hole... Maybe there is a framerate issue? I got a 144hz monitor which runs the game at 144fps.

The horse animation looks really cool though. The art is rough around the edges but its very clear, that you know, what you're doing.

I will only rate the game on the stuff i can see. Maybe there is a way to fix the jumping issue I encounter?

22. Apr 2020 · 10:40 UTC

- platforming was a bit difficult with the controls because holding the jump button triggers another jump and air control was very limited. I would prefer it if it wouldn't jump a second time
- Viewport felt too small, made it hard to see where you were jumping. It wasn't too much of a problem because the level design was forgiving enough
- Horse animations look really good

A very nice and cute game. I have some opinions. The game control of the platform jump type is an important part. Sometimes I will have no way to stop in time. There is some inertia. Secondly, the map is very large and it needs constant trial and error. And once you die, you need to start again, there is no archive point. But the overall completion is still great, this horse is really cute

The horse made me go "wow", the animation is stunning. I love the style and aesthetics, like paper/hand-drawn. Really pretty!

I'm just gonna start by saying, that's a fantastic looking horse. The rest of the game's art is quite good as well. The collision and controls should use a bit of work as I found it hard to put my character exactly where I wanted them. Also a checkpoint system or something of the sort would be handy so that when you fall off a ledge you didn't have to start from scratch.

Nice work. I'll finish by saying again, that's a fantastic looking horse.

the art especially the horse and the cave itself were fantastic. Also exploring around was very fun. I once was climbing dropping platform and hopped into the wall without a plan only to find a hidden cave. It was pretty hype.
One thing that i think would greatly benefit this game is a short idle animation, the animations were fantastic and pretty which made the idle feel a bit lifeless in comparison.
I had fun searching around for all of the apples, good game :)

The horse is great, with its animations! Really nice that there were multiple ways to explore, that made it fun as well. I think it would be a very nice addition if you could add savepoints. I noticed the the horse's hitbox was a bit smaller than it's size, which made navigating or picking up apples a bit difficult sometimes. Once again, well done on the animations, love them!

The graphics are phantastic! Especially the loading animation was very nicely done. I had fun playin, even though Pit died every time I played :( The eating sound effect came in a little late but overall it was great, I liked that there is no time pressure but I would have appreciated something like the flags in Super Mario, such that one does not have to start over from 0 every time, as I found it quite difficult to get very far.

22. Apr 2020 · 21:25 UTC
I did find the time it took to load between the game and main screen a little long at times when I just wanted to get back into the game. The controls felt a little clunky, that the animation and key presses weren't quite lined up but it might have been related to the type of animations that were used.

I liked the idle animation where the horse looks at you, I also liked the hidden areas and how some of the apples you only had one chance to get them else you would just have to carry on with the journey.
22. Apr 2020 · 21:40 UTC
I liked the graphical style you folks aimed for in this one, though I will be making some points about the gameplay that I feel needs to be addressed. I felt that some of the hazards meshed too much into the backdrop color, which especially didn't help against the first stalactite hazard you encounter. That was also compacted on by the character's momentum, which carried me into the hazard a good few times while testing the game. I also found that the rolling boulder hazard would've been a bit neater if you could kick it to destroy it, but I digress. As for the apple collection and its relation to the theme, I found it a bit tenuous at best. Yes, arguably a horse eating 100 apples would probably keep it alive, but I didn't feel it really added a challenge to the game that suitably matched the theme. Speaking of the 100 apples, was it mandatory to collect all of them? Some apples you can't actually collect once you've gone past, and I noticed in particular with the three box arrangement in the main cave system that it's very easy to leave one apple floating above a box where it's inaccessible.

Either way, nice visuals, gameplay could use some refinement, horse in a cave earns my infamous thumbs up.

I like the horse art. Movement is a bit hard to control, like when jumping from box to box. Could do something with feedback, like when I didn't know the platform could fall (the railings?) or the boulder that fell could actually kill me when I touch it.

Oh my, how on earth did I, a beautiful horsie, end up in the coal mine. Be as it may, I must get out. This is not the way I want to spend my day. I long for the outdoors.

Fortunately the friendly miners are clearly apple connoisseurs as myself so I at least will not go hungry. Somehow my feet feel a little wobbly (must be the bad air in the mines) and I find that the walls around me are somehow undefined, it is like I cannot really figure out when I collide with anything anymore! Is this really a mine, or is this purgatory! It must be the latter as there are traps everywhere! And I cannot get out! Even death doesn't allow me to escape! Oh no, what wrongs have I done in my lifetime to end up like this. I have been wronged. I was a good horsie while on the surface. Woe is me.

Very enjoyable game, thanks! I love how you thought of adding the 'skidding to a halt' animation when trying to instantly move in the other direction, and having a bolting animation on space bar (I try the standard keys with most games, and am always delighted to see when something happens even if it doesn't do anything in the game!). Some hitboxes for the apples were a bit hard to get (especially during jumps), but apart from that I had a great time playing your game!

I like the art-style and animation. The problem is level design and movement. For hourses sprite it difficult to jump and move. I think you need to make tunnels higher and it would be nice! The same is for movement, but comments above had to say enough for this theme. Good luck :*

Nice Art-style and animation. Here some critism:
1. The gameplay felt raw, and wasn't much challenging.
2. The hitbox of horse was small, maybe it could be improve and be bigger?
3. Didn't match the theme, player could just stand at one play and be alive. Maybe something like apple hunger or falling rock from behind could make the game match the theme more. (This would also help 1st point)

Hey, great job on creating a solid game model.
1. I think the concept was good. Adding the falling platforms was a nice change of pace. I think having danger be inherent at the beginning would make the player be on edge more.
2.The art animation for the horse was well done! I loved the loading screen.
3. I think the music and sound did it's job! Good work there.

@jasmine-cooper Thank you for your feedback! I tried to make the falling platforms not kill the player early to let them know what they did but also as they don't respawn I made collecting all the apples need to be a perfect run. I did find out last night that in one case if you don't make the jump it screws you over and you can't progress at all so I should've made that a death I think.

Really great animations and art for Pit! Otherwise a fairly solid platformer rougelike. A little more work and some more features would go a long way, but we are all working under timed conditions in the game jam so i think this is a good submission. Good Job!

The walk cycle of the horse was pretty good. Some aspects which could improve it even more would be some overlapping animation by offsetting some parts of the tail and horse's mane by a few frames. They felt a bit stiff. In addition the head movement could be a bit more and some squash on the belly when landing. But overall very impressive to watch :)

Awesome game. Very hard, some may find it too challenging, but I like it :)

It looks amazing, I can see you have put a lot of work there. However in terms of control, it could be better. I don't like the horse sliding off crates. A little more friction whould have been nice.

Cheers!

With an unclear hitbox and no checkpoints this game is hard as balls but just as pleasant to play! Love the artwork and the music! Loved finding the little secret areas.

A little buggy in places, pretty sure all of them were pointed out by previous commenters already. But still, a charming game, nice job overall

Very cool. Very nice graphics, expecially the horse. He looks so cute!
A bit jittery in places, where the collision is a bit to precise. but overall a very fun game.

Nice horse design and the idle animation is fun :)
The music is extremely repetitive and the controls not very responsive (mainly due to the size of the horse). Also given it's a horse I feel like it would make sense for it to jump longer distances and maybe smaller heights.
I didn't finish your game but I didn't find any use for the rear up move ? It broke boxes to find carrots but I'm not sure if there is any use for them.

The idea of having surprise traps and making the player restart to try to avoid them can be cool but then I feel like polishing the controls is key because you don't want players frustrated by irresponsive controls and unpredictable hitboxes

Overall cool design, well done !

I also had issues on my 144hz monitor, I couldn't even get out of the start zone. Luckily I read here - I just moved it to a different monitor and Pit started SOARING! Maybe check if you scale your fallspeed with time.deltaTime?

Pretty Fun game, the horse really makes it, love the art style, animations, sounds, and music. Love that he/she scoots when you stop but is slightly buggy when you hold both A and D. The input was a little choppy during the more accuracy-needed jumps, and the terrain caused strange bumps at times. I agree with other comments that the hitbox to grab an apple was sometimes slightly frustratingly small.

Great work!

Cool entry, an awesome art-style that looks like a story drawn over old leather parchments or when you draw with coal and chalk over rough brown paper!!!

Some improvements from my point of view:

Lack of sound effects, mainly for the horse itself, I would like to hear more sounds like the "hooves" stomping the ground, a bit of the horse breathing upon jump, running and when it abruptly stops when you try to go into the opposite direction.

The sfx could also assist the UX by adding some rumbling rocks to anticipate the rockslide and the falling rock;

An ambience that could reinforce the environment, like the reverberation of some sound effects since it's a cave, some cave sounds like echoes of water drops, small creatures, howling wind and some localized flames sounds close to the lamps.

I appreciate the loading screen (it looks really good) and the horse's animations - especially that little bit when he's coming to a stop where he just sits down as he slides. XD I've noticed one minor issue where breaking your very first box causes the "breaking box sound" to play a couple times, making it seems like it's glitching for about 1.5 seconds - but everything works fine after that. :)

Visually game looks awesome. Gameplay is a little bit stiff for my liking when it comes to the platformers. Horse is not very reponsive, sometimes he slides off the edge and gets weird momentum. Also the hazards work really weird. Sometimes I got killed by not touching anything, once the falling boulder killed me when I touched it after it fall down and was lying on a ground. Over all there is a lot to polish and improve. I'll give you guys a follow to see what you will come up next time, as I'm sure with time you will improve a lot.

This was a beautiful entry! The detail on the horse animations was awesome, and I really appreciated it when I left it idle for a couple seconds and it looked up at me. The loading screen was also very nicely done - the wait was long enough to be a little annoying, but having a horse silhouette to look at made it easier. The level design was really nicely done, and even though it was a little frustrating to die and respawn I felt like I kept exploring further and gaining knowledge each run so it wasn't too repetitive. Great work!

The horse is charismatic, and how the map folds itself is really neat. Some animations would make this game cooler. Dont know why, all the sounds were glitchy here. Good game!

The game is nice, art, animations are sounds are good

I noticed a few things; when running into a wall the horse does the glitching thing; then for the rock which fell from above maybe after it reaches the ground it can be made non lethal for the horse to touch it.

Nice breakable boxes which you have to climb to get the apples above

I really liked your silly name play XD About the game, I enjoyed playing it but the deaths were really nerve wrecking. I died twice, one for the falling little rocks in the start and falling at the end because I wanted to keep exploring for more apples. There was no notice of the way down being a death pit, and your game makes you want to explore everywhere, no changes in color of the ground for example and the difference in color of the falling rocks was so small, if it were more detailed, or if it had a warning before, like mini debris, like you did with the shaking for the large rocks. The big rocks i didn't know where they would fall but the shaking warned me to run, but if they fell in my head, I feel that I would hate it because there was no warning so I could atleast dodge.

I believe in overall, the level design needs improvement such as in corridors space, size proportion and layout of rooms, platform easing (i could climb up those platforms before the door but i believe a lot of played would have difficulty reaching the top, for me it didn't felt like it was hard, if felt like the commands weren't responding right, then i changed my playstyle to jump and then press left or right) and the "ramps" felt like they were draw like you didn't care if the horse could jump it, like climbing a moutain is skyrim with a horse XD You could have gotten reference from Mario for the starting level to teach that if u press jump, u jump, if u hold jump, you jump higher, that would help some people that otherwise would have been stuck and blame your map.

I missed player feedback, specially for the breaking of boxes, pushing down door. The music was ok, i saw that u didn't want ratings on it, but the player art and animation is incredible, only change i would make is the head of the horse going up atleast when i walked, it was weird for me him always looking down and it looks like you went almost fully for the animation, i would have went all out. And the animated loading screen? Awesome! I wish we had made one! And last but not least, It felt more like "Escape" then "Keep it Alive"

Uff... In the end, i like your game! You have something that is traditional and kept the fun, in a beautifull horse also!

I love the animations. However, there are some glitches when the horse runs into a wall. Nice game with a simple concept. It would also need some improvement in level design. Sometimes places are so narrow that it is hard to jump. Also, when you die starting from the beginning is a bit challenging. Once I died just because of touching that falling stone when it was already on the ground

Nice drawings! Love the title, loading & game over screen. :D The art is really nice, and you added quite a few elements gameplay-wise. Oddly reminds me of Edge of Tomorrow, in that I always die of something, then learn from that mistake, start over and avoid one more obstacle than I did before. Except sometimes when the slippery controls cause Pit to fall into the floorless void, hehe.

Well done!

nice artwork. the music gets a bit repetitive and there are some issues with the track coming out of the right channel only when you lose, so i actually found it better playing without sound.
I like that there are multiple paths to choose from, some trickier than others. it would be better to help players identify which paths lead to death, because at the moment they look the same, and its frustrating having to restart because of that. My favourite part of this game was the horse himself! i really like the animations and would be great to see what he gets up to in a post-jam version!

Yeah, pretty much what @zebraatomica said. Though, I'd like to add that the world isn't very believable. Why would there be a horse in a cave filled with apples? A horse in a hill landscape would make more sense. Perhaps you can add some backstory, like the horse fell into the cave.

Your drawing is beautiful! The horse and this animation is awesome! The environment is good, but the horse is better. I think that horse and environment is different only cause the time. A game using the horse's art all the game would be good. Some mistakes with the collision, but ok. I would like to see more the LD46's theme in this game.

Some things about the performance first:
On my laptop (i5 3rd gen, 6gb ram, Windows 7) it took very long to load and then crashed. It happened three times at which point I gave up.

After that, I tried the game on my desktop (i7 2nd gen, 16gb ram, Windows 7), still took pretty long to load but after that it ran fine. Had a slowdown when breaking the first box.

I liked the game overall, plays really nice for the most part. The hand drawn art is very pretty, it added a lot of character to the game.
That said, I'm not sure it fits very well to the theme, as the character isn't in an immediate danger (like dying from hunger), the theme here is more like a "escape" which obviously should be done "alive", but that isn't a big deal, please don't take it too heavily.

Anyways: fun game, feels very complete, movement is smooth enough., loved the art. Congrats!

@HolySparks Apologies about the performance, the initial loading bar is a download I think. It's Godot specific so who knows. The sprites are all way bigger than they need to be which is why it is a bit heavy on performance.

- Nice pun with the name <-> literal theme
- Plus for using Godot
- Very nicely hand drawn horse, which is a nice touch for a jam game. Even the loading screen is majestic. But when getting in a corner the timing of the frames of the horse animation goes crazy, which is a bit distracting and mood breaking.
- A bit more context of why moving around inside a cave with a horse eating apples would be good.
- Due to the horse sliding and no time for me to react, I died countless times in the first earth slide, which was a bit frustrating.
- Overall, well made game for a jam, and the gameplay is there, which is valuable!

Definitely the best graphics I've seen during the jam; the pony animation is beautiful.
Really reminded me of the 90s Disney games like Aladdin, Hercules and Lion King (and maybe the megadrive Mickey games as well). Some of the hazards were a bit unfair (I walked into a falling boulder that had come to a rest and it killed me) and the sudden change in the music to just the right ear when you die was a bit jarring.

The animations are really great and the horse is cute. The controls are a bit too slippery though and the collisions seem kind of off. It also wasn't always clear what was dangerous. For example, some pits had collectibles are continued the level whereas other pits caused death. It's pretty fun though and I played it a fair few times.

The animations of the horse are very well made. Congratulation for that! The choice of moving a jumping horse in galleries is special. I felt very congested. But it is original. The gameplay is very classical and not really in the theme but it's working to keep our attention alive. I think some polish would be required for the character movements (A bit slippery) and some contrast between background and middleground would give more clarity for the path. Anyway. It's a good entry. It was nice to test it. (Yes, the horses are so fond of apples. The cannot stop to eat ;) )

Nice game, I liked the artwork, the concept is a bit different too which is good! There maybe could have been a bit more room, the pony is pretty big compared to the tunnels, obstacles etc. Quite harsh to the player on making mistakes too, as it's instant game over! Good job though, I enjoyed it.
