Ludum Dare 45 by Trypants

[raw]
made by Trypants for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

The Box-Boy mixes 2D isometric style with some Tower Defence elements. Defend yourself against Box-Vilains.

Start with nothing. Gather resources and give it to the altar. It will protect you against Box-Villains.

Use Arrow keys or w,a,s,d to move. Use Space bar to pick/drop items.

Lots of bugs! I was short on time.

This game was made in less than 48h for Ludum Dare 45. box-boy.png

It is a liitle bit buggy (or it is just me), but the idea is very cool!

I don't understand what i could do to protect my altar. I took resources and bring them to altar but it do anything :(

The movement system make the game so unplayable that it's sad :/

Didn't realise at first that I was meant to pick up ores after destroying them, figured they were added to my inventory. I tried picking them up but it feels very tricky to actually position yourself right to pick up the ore, so I figured you couldn't.
I've fed the core a little and whilst it played sounds, it doesn't seem to be doing much to kill the enemies, even going at optimal speed.
I'm sure a lot of the technical problems just come down to the time limit which is understandable, so design wise I'd say try to figure out where you want the challenge to come from. As in, is it from strategy or from acting fast, seemingly the latter. If so, you could do more to indicate that such as a countdown or faster music.
Overall though, I'm sure you could have done more given more time. Art style is quite pleasant.

There is no UI in WebGL build and controls not really obvious, but the idea and visual are pretty cool.

I think if the player was mouse controlled rts-style or arrows moved in direction relative to camera it would have been much better. I loved the simple and clean graphics.

Beautiful palette, interesting gameplay idea - wish you had more time to test and fix some bugs. But if you ask me - I don't mind controls, after a while you'll adapt.

graphics are pleasing, the controls are terrible, and it isn't that fun to play because of it

Nice style with the isometric. Would maybe be easier with mouse/touch to tell player character where to go/mine, as it was a struggle with WASD, and trying to align with the drops to grab the loot / give to the alter.

Bonus points for sound effects!

This game has an interesting concept, and cool graphics and sound design. It seems tho, that the music doesn't loop, so that should be fixed. The movement system is super confusing, maybe movement should work on clicking on tiles instead. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do in the game, but it sure has potential. The game seems a bit unfinished though, as there is no guide, and at one point I lost control of my character, and he just flew off screen, which I think is because I lost, but not sure why I lost and I wasn't told that I lost.

Mining worked nice but I couldn't pick anything up, so I got stuck there. I liked the mining sound and the music (although the music stopped). Color palette is good, lava looks nice :)

it's very pretty, but moving from box to box would have been better especially since it is very difficult to catch objects on the ground.
it also lacks a screen for defeat.
I do not know for the victory I did not succeed...

In any case very beautiful game

Looks great but I am having a lot of issues with the controls. Also its kind of confusing, not sure how to properly defend my base, I broke blocks and moved them towards my tower but don't get it

Love the art style, when I first launched it none of the movement keys worked. Also, the hit detection when picking up blocks feels off. Maybe you could change the system to automatically pick up any items in the grid square you're in rather than have to be so precise?

SFX are good for the job they're playing  Music was nice too! Overall a pretty good starting point for a game, congrats!

Cute isometric graphics but you should work with controls and some bugs. Prototype seems well :B

A bit unfinished, but the visual looks great!

Control and the collision detection with the block pickup was a bit unpredictable. Also feels a bit too difficult, as the enemies pile up before I could collect enough blocks.

Nice music if it doesn't stop as soon as I pick up something :D

Yep, controls need some work and the music stops playing the moment you pickup a block. The game looks beautiful though. Congrats on completing the Compo!

I really like the style, and was having fun, but unfortunately I got to close to the edge and got sorta stuck. Other than that super cool!

Game is a bit buggy, I got stuck a couple times, and I am really not a fan of WASD + isometric, since it really doesn't translate well, but overall it's a neat idea, like a very simplified Minecraft.

Game was kinda buggy (but its made in 48 hours and you cant get them all) I didn't fully understand how to gather materials but the art style was fun

Concept, graphics and sounds are really good but controls and collisions feels buggy. Do you think to keep working on it?

I liked the 2D iso look, didn't realise you were supposed to "mine" all three colors to get ammo, had to restart to understand.

Good job, hope you'll fix the bugs !

Hey there, great submission. Loved the artstyle and music (altough it bugged out  ). Controls felt a bit sloppy, but got used to it after a while! Overall a pretty good starting point for a game, congrats! Care to checkout my submission?

Sadly, the object pick-up system seems broken, can't do anything sufficient and my altar is dying in pain((

Really loving the art style but I did run into quite a few bugs which meant I couldn't play as intended :(

controls are rather problematic. On both tries to play sooner or later game got stuck and character slowly glided away. Not sure what happened.
There's no gui in web version, so maybe I / altar died...

I really like the idea and the graphics but it's really hard to pick up the resources to fuel the altar. Also the music seems to cut out when I try and break the rocks. I think there's a really cool idea here, well done!

This is a really good idea and the graphics are fantastic but the controls are a little bit painful for me tbh.

Cool game and nice mechanic, just the controls, as they said, are a bit confusing. But it's good! A really cool mechanic that could be added is to have diferent type of enemies, which require diferent type of ammo to be destroyed, this could make the game more strategical and fun!!!

I liked the graphics. Unfortunately, I didn't know how to play the game... I held space to mine resources, picked them up, but didnt know what to do with it. I placed them in the altar but didn't seem to do anything. Also, controls were hard to get used to.

Dealing with isometric perspective in a short amount of time can be challenging, yet this is a great effort. There's a great game underneath, but you need to fix all those small bugs.

Fortunately somebody else in the comments mentioned that you have to pick up the stones after destroying the block. This helped me figure it out.
Picking up the stones is a little bit tricky, would love a slightly larger pick-up radius.
