Ever wanted to take care of a pet, but never felt like it any of the pets out there was a perfect fit for you? Introducing Magic Atoth, the perfect breed of pet!

Geneticists here at the Atoth company have been hard at work researching and experimenting to figure out the formula for the ideal pet experience, and this cute little thing is the result of years of dedication towards the cause! Now, there's no need to choose between any of the thousands of other pets out there, just select the one that's made to be perfect!

But wait, there's more! While a regular pet may be a money-sucking machine, requiring specialized food, care and living standards, Magic Atoth eliminates the need to worry about money by being able to live in any condition! It can eat any type of food, including the stuff you don't want, and only needs water in addition with that in order to survive, and live happily! In fact, we don't even charge you money to get one, we're giving them away free to anyone who wants them!

Just take it!

Please!

Instructions
  • Drag food from the food box to feed your Atoth
  • Drag the water bowl to let it have a refreshing drink

Nice graphics and overall aesthetics. The only thing that bugged me on the graphics was the starting font was a bit hard to read, but maybe it was just me. Gameplay wise, the pacing could be done a bit better, but it gave ma nostalgic tamagochi vibe which is nice!

I first think that the tamagochi part is to longue but then I realize that (it's a bit to long and) it increase the pressure while you know more and more how it will end, sooo, long, short, it's definitely worse playing.
And @svenerik said the police on the customer paper is a bit hard to read.

Amazing game. I didn't think there was much else but a Tamgochi game, but when I discovered otherwise I was really suprised. I liked playing it.

Can't say I was expecting that

The aesthetic was very nice and I played through the whole game as the story kept me engaged, definite 5 stars for mood

good old "tamagotchi" with some "twist" - cool idea for this lD! Nice tamagotchi art and cool sounds. Spoiler ahead - hard to understand that key can be pick up by click.

That was unexpected.

The virtual pet game looked really nice. The background was getting to be nauseating, but by the end I felt that it was important to be so bright and cheery. The tone for all parts was perfect.

The nighttime controls weren't obvious. I was never sure why doors wouldn't open. I got through by trial and error.

I missed how I (the pet owner) had access to all of that information, since I was a customer, and not one of the creators. Sense-making aside, it was super entertaining.

Nice and moody. I suppose the only thing I can say without spoiling it is: Great idea to switch genres like that! I wasn't expecting such a story! Well done!

Thank you all for playing and leaving feedback!

**Note: You should play the game before reading this comment further.**

@svenerik I totally agree that the font was hard to read. I actually noticed it while playing the game myself, but for some reason I chose not to change it. I probably should have enabled anti-aliasing, it's just I felt it didn't really "fit" with the artstyle. I'm happy it gave Tamagotchi vibes though, that's what I was going for!

@brtek007 How come? It's just a cute pet game... ; )

@nakami The tamagotchi part is definitely a bit too long, yeah. I was planning to add more things to do with your pet so it wouldn't feel as empty, but in the end I unfortunately didn't have enough time. I'm happy it served some purpose building tenstion at least!

@simonbeats Thank you! The surprise-factor was a big part of my plan to make the game feel more interesting, so it feels like it succeeded in doing what I wanted it to. I'm glad you enjoyed playing it!

@ilikescifi Thanks! I actually tried to make some kind of mash up of all kinds of cute animals in order to create a nice, sort of unique design. :)

@fateaglegames Too bad, there's no takebacks! Jokes aside, thanks for playing, glad it was a great experience!

@blueman An engaging story was what I was hoping to create, so it's nice to hear you thought so! Thank you so much for the generous rating too, mood definitely was the thing I was focused on overall!

@captandrey The controls absolutely were a bit ambiguous, yeah. I just felt like adding some sort of "tutorial" in the dark sections would risk breaking the tension, but naturally I should have added something of the sort, or perhaps at least made it so you could interact using any of the other common interact keys, like "E". It's nice to hear you liked the concept though, as well as the art and sounds!

@pincushion The background may have been a bit of a bad choice for sure, a slower speed for its movement might have helped make it more bearable. As mentioned above, I definitely could have been more clear with the controls at nighttime, perhaps with a tutorial. In addition to this, the gameplay wasn't very clear either, as you've noticed. Nighttime is basically just collecting keys, as the papers themselves work as "keys", in that doors are opened when they're picked up. I was planning to add some sound cues to make this more obvious, but I unforunately ran out of time. :( In regards to the story, I agree that it's pretty unclear what the player's role is. I focused more on the part of the story portrayed through the papers rather than how the player fits into everything, as I felt that was more interesting, but I understand it kind of makes the experience a bit cryptic. Very glad to hear the tone was on point though, and that it managed to be an entertaining experience despite the flaws!

@cogcomp Thank you, I'm happy you liked the story and mood! As said above, they were basically the things I worked hardest on, so it's nice to see my effort paid off. :)

@lestat Thanks, it's nice to hear that the game managed to fit the theme well!

@fpixel Glad I was able to incite some childhood memories, and that you liked the art too!

Again, thanks everyone for playing and giving critique! Good luck with your ratings as well!

Fantastic! I really enjoyed how the story unfolded- and everything gelled; audio, art, and game play. I totally freaked out when things changed- how human of me. Wonderful work! Thanks so much for the game!

This is the best game I have played this Ludum Dare. I loved the sudden twist, I thought this was just another Tamagotchi game, boy was I wrong.

The art is work very well and the sound design is good.

I found the font hard to read in places, but that might just be me.

Very good job :)
