Bodyguard is an entry in the ludum dare 46 compo. All assets and code written by me in 48 hours.

You are the bodyguard and you must ensure the VIP stays alive by killing any would-be assassins. You'll receive radio communications to help you pin down which of the civilians is really an assassin.

gameplay1_gif.gif

Once you've found the assassin, take your shot before they have a chance to kill the VIP!

success_gif.gif

Play progressively harder levels with more and more civilians but try not to shoot any innocent bystanders, they won't like that very much.

There are some mechanics people don't tend to notice from short play sessions:

  • After 35 seconds the assassin can stab the VIP
  • If someone just walks through the VIP past 35 seconds, they probably aren't the assassin
  • If you hear a sound and the screen shakes, the assassin tried to stab the VIP but failed. He's probably still close by!
  • After 120 seconds the assassin will aggressively seek out the VIP
  • Take a warning shot to stop the civilians for a second!

My colorblindness ir a really negative handicap jajaja. Loved the way everything kind of move, as in those drawing animated games.

Great game! I enjoyed your take on the theme. The first round the description perfectly matched the VIP and I shot him because I didn't realize that's what the crown meant, oops.

Further polish could turn this into a much better game ;) Maybe instead of text you give killers information as icons as it's easier to absorb information that way :)

I love the shaking graphics style. Gives it a cool hand-drawn feel. I laughed at "His own mother...". I failed when I wasn't sure what color "jeans" were. If I could give one critique, the game text wrapping words between lines makes the instructions harder to leave. All in all, I've learned that I should never be trusted with a sniper rifle and a walkie-talkie.

Very cool visual style and a creative idea. Very much in line with the theme. Success feels a little random, in whether or not you get a good enough Venn diagram hint early enough to do OK. The hidden clues were lost on me until I read the info here - I didn't really know who the VIP was, and I sure didn't know these other clues. If it had been hinted in some way in-game that there were other clues, that would have made it more of a puzzle. Nice work! Fun one.

Nice little game you got there! The graphics are very pleasant. The gameplay is a mix of smooth and stressful! I like it! I got to level 3, but I'm pretty mentally tired from making my own compo game, so... Hahaha

Very cool aesthetic and loved the walkie talkie! Wish it was slightly faster paced. Also really nice game feel for the buttons and stuff. Nice one man :)

@a1gemmel I realize now I guess it was an oversight: jeans can be any colour! When playtesting I got "His own mother said he has a square head" or something and I had to laugh. I definitely should have made the text wrapping split at full words. Thanks for the comment!

I really like these kinds of games in which you have to guess the enemy from a set of characteristics... this game is like guess who but with shooting and the art style of the flash games era we all hold dear.

I liked the vibe of this game, the hand-drawn style of the characters and walkie talkie and everything fit well with the music and the theme

One thing which could have been improved was matching the dead body sprite with the actual assasin

cool idea and nice execution 👍 i lost on level 6 because some dummy ran in front of my crosshair ha. the graphics are super clear, and the sfx and visual fx do a good job of showing what's happening. there's kind of an exploit in that there's no penalty for spamming 'warning shots' in the corner, which makes it a lot easier. i really like the mechanic of keeping an eye on things while also trying to catch the next clue

Super nice mechanics, cool 8Bit art bro! Made it to level 5, gave up but definitely kept me interested longer than most entries. Keep it up bro!

Good entry: difficulty ramp up at a confortable rate, and it become rapidly a moving where is Waldo with guns :-D

Pretty fun! I really dig the art style. Clever mechanic, if a little slow for me.

Awesome work! Great attention to detail. Loved the hand-drawn graphics, especially the text! I made it to...some level after 9. Thanks for sharing!

Things I like in a game: Simple, great concept, aesthetic, and small file size XD. There's hardly anything wrong with this game I can think of. I'll give this a very good rating!

I loved this game :) First game I really like, but the audio is annoying. Well done!

I really liked this one. It's not the most original concept, I've played games like it before, but i thought the execution was spot on, and I'd definitely play a version that was a little bit more fleshed out. Specifically, I'd love some of the difficulty come into play a little earlier, or have the game move at a generally faster pace. Waiting for text to appear made the play time a little longer than it needed to, so I wasn't captured long enough to see some of the more nuanced features kick in. I also played this on stream, so take that with a grain of salt. Overall, great effort. Thanks for the game!

Art and animation is really well done. Concept was really unique. Quite impressed with the simplicity of the art style and made you focus on trying to find the assassin. Great work.

Really like the visual art style. the movement gives the games ui more liveliness. The core mechanics are there and done well. It almost put you on the edge of your seat if you wait to long. I really enjoy this game and would definitely want more. I enjoyed the 8-Bit sound track although did get a little repetitive.

I think the general concept of this game is very unique. The player is expected to sit back before taking action and determine who to target based on information given. The graphics (at a glance) may not look spectacular, but once you get into the game and start playing, you immediately realize that there's something special going on with the graphics... That is, everything is animated! Everything! I mean... EVERYTHING! Right down to the Font, icons and even the talk bubble itself is fully animated. This level of detail is very impressive, especially for a game jam. The music writing was good, but the 8-bit sound quality is never a good thing for me (being an old man with hearing problems). I would definitely play this game again when I have a little more time. I consider this to be a good candidate for the game jam. I hope to see you near the top. Good luck!

Definitely one of my favorite games of the weekend, and it's in the compo! I can't get enough of games like SpyParty, and this scratched that same itch. I enjoy that it just keeps going to, but I wish I could start on any level I wanted so after I get to level 11 or so I don't have to go through the first 10 every time. Would love to see this iterated on!

good job on the game. Really enjoy the game and got to level 8. Really hard towards the end.

I really enjoy the amount of focus needed for the game at the later stages

haha you had me at "His mother tells us...". I think if you want to create a laid back hunting experience, it's a success, mainly thanks to the relaxing music. Is it intentional for certain lv to make a 50/50 call? I.e the number of clues given does not rule out all suspects.

This game remembered a lot of Minecraft and Gmod servers with the same type of game, it's pretty fun and with the programer art and the funny phrases makes the experience very great. Congratulations for making not only a kind off "port" for the gamemode in a full videogame but for making it even better and funnier

I love how my first idea was the just shoot the VIP and the game let me do it. 10/10

This isn't the most original idea, but this is really well executed and a great way to kill time. I love that you were able to put in so many little mechanics and details, but it would've been nice if they were explained in game instead of on the game page.

Good call making the starting text advance faster at the start of each level after the first one. Little details like that always show how much you paid attention when designing the game.

Thanks for bringing your game by my stream to check out! You can find the highlight at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/606399377

There were some very nice touches in the game. Given all the discussion, it would be fun to have a definitely-not-IP-infringing character with a striped scarf...

Nice graphics and good work on the randomized information about the assassins. I was to nervous and tried to execute the assassins a little to quickly (I think) which of course often led to failure, but I made it to level 3 :)

Wow thats a cool game with a cool idea.

I really liked the search and kill feeling here.

Maybe a summary of the Hints would be cool or maybe it makes it "too easy"

But the sounds and graphics are really fit each other and overall a nice Game
Well Done
