Loop Frogs

Loop Frogs is a puzzle platformer where your two frogs must work together to reach the exit. Green can loop through the same actions again and again, and Brown can use this to clear the way, reach higher platforms and get to the exit.

Controls

  • 2-button gamepad support
  • Keyboard:
    • AD / cursors - Move
    • , or SPACE - Jump
    • . or ENTER - Switch
  • Alternative layout:
    • QD (azerty)
    • AE (dvorak)

Known bugs

~~We're aware of a physics issue where sometimes green frog's loop doesnt exactly match, and perhaps won't make a specific jump in subsequent loops. From what I understand this is a known issue to do with delta smoothing on each update. We're looking into possible solutions, but until then it doesn't really detract from the fun of the game - just start a new loop and all will be well. Ribbit.~~
*Mostly fixed... Enjoy!!

Thanks for playing all!

@ninnec You can use SPACE to jump and ENTER to switch character. Or actually, Numpad 0 will work too if you're using cursors...
Best played on a joypad though, I've found. ;)

Heh we had an idea very similar to this originally - and this is very well executed! I loved the puzzles! Game could've benefited from some music and removing that "AAAAA" audio from the green frog, but it's a really well made game otherwise.

Using the loop frog as a platform is a fun take on the recorded action puzzle game.
I do think that the way the burner obstacle was used in large numbers in straight paths was mostly dragging out the solutions however, not a compelling way to design the levels.
The strong and clean presentation makes up for it tho, I would definitely try another version with improved puzzles.

I love the mechanics, the graphics were nice, and the puzzles were well designed. I think the sounds arefunny.
There were times when it seemed that the green frog doesn't follow a new loop I set for it and reverts to the first loop so I had to redo the loop I wanted to set. But other than that, I really enjoyed playing the game.

I love this game ! It reminds me of chronolooper which was also very fun, but I like how in this one, it’s two different frogs that you switch between. The art is cool and that sound effects were pretty funny. I think I found a bug where the green will loop as the green +orange one while the orange one stays still (2 orange ones), but it wasn’t gamebreaking. Very fun game dude, great job.

Great art and gameplay, it was really fun, I don't know how I noticed that the green frog had a double-jump until the very last stage, the green frog got stuck a couple of times and stepped a bit off the buttons which broke the advance for me, but luckily got solved by starting a new loop.

Cool game. It looks great and the puzzle solving theme is great. There were a few issues with the positioning of the Green Frog loops sometimes but that's no big deal. Nice job, the only thing that bothered me were the sounds the frogs made when they jumped. But that's what mute is for right?

The concept is awesome, I love the art style. The goofy walking animation of the green frog makes me laugh every time I keep staring at it. Great puzzle game, levels are so fun, and it is also very challenging when thinking how to plan the actions of the green frog. However, our Luigi (for Mario's) frog is like such a tool, maybe there can be more levels designed for the brown frog to help the Luigi frog. Well done!

It actually took me a second to understand what was going on with the green frog... but once I got it, I fell in love!

I'm a huge fan of strategy/puzzle games that involve time and control. This mechanic completely nails that!

Not sure I have much criticism or feedback. The art style is solid and cute. The button mechanics and accompanying sound design works.

one of the best time loop puzzles I've tried so far. Absolute fantastic! Love how you incorporated the frogs! Love the art style! My only problem is that there is no music sadly and sometimes the replay isn't accurate. But I understand that creating an accurate time loop could be really hard. I also did it in my game and I have the same bug as you. Other than that, puzzle level design is well crafted. Good job!

I like the cute graphics. Really clean looking.

I also like the sounds the frogs make, especially when they die.

A few times I ran into a bug where the green frog's actions didn't follow what I did exactly - I wasn't able to tell why. Must be a discrepancy somewhere between how the frog responds to your inputs versus the saved inputs. Only happened now and then, though, so not that big a deal.

Nice take on the "looping actions" mechanic, and great work overall.

Wow, really good! I like your pixelart style, the concept is great. I just had one problem in the level, where you have to move right over three burners. I setup the loop with green, but when i mounted green i kept dying. only after letting the loop play out once it worked. Maybe its just a little unclear what was recorded and what wasnt. I thought dying would reset the loop. Everything else seemed flawless :D

Really clean execution on the concept here! The only problem I ran into was having my frog seemingly desync from the path I had laid out? Not sure what happened there, but redoing the loop seemed to fix it.

Hey there @garys :) Great to see you back with a new game. I remember having a lot of fun with 'For Duck's Sake' earlier this year. Let's see... awesome pixel art, a fun and absurd premise and awesome frog sound effects. Check! I've played a lot of games with this kind of core game play concept this jam and am already a little burned out, I'm afraid. Your's at least kept me interested with the love of detail regarding the level design and the characters. Definitely the best of those I've played so far. The controls were snappy and responsive and the levels weren't too frustrating (at least to the point I played it). This game could really use some funky soundtrack to go along with it :) Maybe you can find some musician next time.

all in all another great entry. Keep it up!

This is a great game. The puzzles were well designed and I really liked the looping mechanic. One thing I didn't like was that on the jet flame traps, the brown frog was killed by touching them even if they were being disabled by the green frog. My expectations were that once disabled, the entire thing was harmless.

08. Oct 2020 · 23:30 UTC
oooh, this is such a fun game :D

While confusing at first (is any mechanic introduced this LD not confusing?), I really loved the creative way to rethink a puzzle platformer! Once you get the jist, it is an extremely fun, enjoyable and rewarding ride!
What I particularly loved was the death sound of frog_green :D One thing I'd have to nitpick is that the hurtbox of the firethrower is disabled a bit later than the animation implies, which makes the level with the line of them a tad bit frustrating (I personally went with the slow route for that level for that very reason).
Other than that though, I really feel this is on the level of an actual demo, not just a jam game. Thank you for bringing us this game u_u.

Finally my dream fantasy of being able to play Frog and Toad in a game lol.

From a high concept point of view I loved this game. A pair of frog friends where one is relatively useless, and another one who can casually time travel and jump much higher. Sooooo good. In fact it's pretty unique cuz most games try to have both characters be somewhat powerful in their own right, but here Brown just mooches haha.

Like @duke said, there's quite a bit of entries like this this LD, but your overall execution does make it stand out and made me not feel theme fatigue here. Even the tutorial was presented very well and in line with the world.

09. Oct 2020 · 14:49 UTC
Really good game! I love how you put a spin on the most overused mechanic in this jam by having the looping and not looping characters interact! The later levels started to be more about timing and reaction rather than puzzles. Only thing I didn't like was the final level. How was I supposed to guess you could double jump on fire? I thought the solution was going to be something clever that I had missed that could bring the brown frog to the green frog, but nope, just jump straight into the main hazard the game has been telling you to avoid.

Gameplay aside, the game is also very polished. The graphics are superb, and the audio is so funny, I kept making the frogs die on purpose and it was hilarious!

10. Oct 2020 · 19:02 UTC
Got stuck in one of the levels because several times in a row, the green frog wasn't matching the pattern I gave him like, at all. Not sure what # it was, but it was the level with three 'permanent' buttons (the second of which, you have to reset to get out of the room with it). I couldn't get the brown frog out of the first room because whenever I wasn't controlling green, green would fail to make the jump out of the room.

I was also slightly confused by the banner at first; I thought it was an extension of the gameplay window because they're so close. Maybe some slight space or a border would help separate them?

Really liked the theme/idea though, and it's very visually appealing.

Another take on ghost/follower entity platformer based on timeloops and another unique execution of it :) Found the jumping mechanics to be a little bit too tricky to my taste, but it may be just me. Level design executed very well and simple, so no big spikes in difficulty. Would love to see more variations of the levels itself (other backgronds etc) but de to Jam time it's understandable. Very good entry and the job well done!

Fun puzzle game! It was cool to collaborate with myself on some levels. [Seems like we were on similar pages for the theme this jam ](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/echoes-of-ouroboros)

Great puzzle game good work. The tutorial is solid and well presented and it's a good unique take on the theme. I felt like you balanced challenge without having it too easy or frustrating. Good stuff.

super clever, and well executed! some of the levels felt a bit long (restarting the green frog from the start just to add something at the end became a bit of a chore sometimes), but overall is was super good!!!

I absolutely loved the characters, and the mechanic that makes your frogs have to ride one another while having different capabilities was fantastic. I would love to see more leves with these guys!

Great idea in the game, it didn't take very long to get how I'm supposed to progress. Really good clean graphics and super cute frogs

The hop-sounds were a little "noisy", if you get what I mean. They sounded a little low quality recording like they were coming from an old phone. They were perfectly functional, just felt like a little bit of a bad fit for the rest of the game, when everything else was so polished.

I also somehow confused the buttons several times, but that's more on me than the game

Really happy to have played this

@hunttis lol yeah, the frog sounds were just me and my daughter croaking into a headset and no sound software to lower the volume or clean it up. Thanks for the feedback.

Very good game design. It took a bit time to understand the mechanic, but once I did, I enjoy a lot the puzzles. The Level design is very clever. And the frogs are cute. And there's many possibilities! The level with all the blue flames to switch off with the green frog make the synchronisation difficult, but very interesting. Only the sound is a bit rough and boring after a while. Otherwise, good job you two!!!

fantastic!
my only issue is having the platforming elements. I think it should be just a puzzle game IMO
especially if this ever made it to mobile :)

great job otherwise!

It is a very creative game, and an excellent interpretation of the theme. I like the graphics and the sound in general. The gameplay is very unique and different. The controls are precise, as well as the main mechanics of performing actions among the frogs. I see a lot of potential in your idea, and I hope you will consider making an expanded and commercial version of your game. Good job.

this game is awesome! I love the idea of one character being in a loop, and the other not, and using that to solve puzzles. The jump height difference between the two is another great layer of complexity.

the platforming (particularly jumping over tall fire) was a bit challenging/frustrating to me, and I really really didn't care the sound effects of jumping, for some reason they made me feel pretty uncomfortable.

Is there a way to restart/reset a level? I couldn't figure out any way to, which was also kind of frustrating.

Overall, great job, your idea was awesome and your execution was was solid, just some nitpicks / user friendly things.
