Gryphon Peaks by chainedlupine

[raw]
made by chainedlupine for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Gryphon Peaks, my entry for the Ludum Dare Game Jam #46.

Theme: Keep It Alive

Update: HTML5 build has been released! Notice, the game looks a bit different as I had to port the screen-effects shader to Web GL 1.0, and that has caused some slight visual differences.

Controls: W/S = forward and back, A/D = strafe, R/F = up/down, mouse left = shoot, mouse move = steer

Objective: Save your gryphon nests from the attacking demon plane enemies! They have opened portals and will surge out and attack both you and your vulnerable nests. Destroy all the portals by attacking and killing enemies, which will cause planar crystals to spawn. Collect the crystal and carry it to the portal to destroy it. Destroying all portals and enemies and you win!

Loved just about everything about this! The PS1/N64 style graphics were very satisfying, and once I got the hang o of the controls I found the gameplay very addicting. Thanks for including flight inversion, I had a lot of trouble before finding that setting, so I was so happy to see that you took the time to add that.

the graphics were great, and while the game was buggy at the start, not letting me shoot or look around - turning off fullscreen and bumping up sensitivity managed to fix it! Excluding gam jam jankyness - the game is amazing!

Loved the graphics, as everyone agrees. The game was a bit short, though. Short and pretty weird. I wish the FOV had been higher and the camera controls had been the other way around, but overall, nice. Weird, but nice. Feels very gamey. That's something to chew on.

I like the art style a lot, but mouselook feels sluggish and inconsistent regardless of sensitivity, and the web build seems to be buggy and will spontaneously stop capturing mouse input sometimes, which prevented me from enjoying it much. Also, y-axis inversion should probably be off by default.

I really love the look of this, you combine low-poly with dithering in a way that is incredibly appealing to nostalgia filled glasses. The controls were rather awkward though, it would have been better to handle turning/aiming with the mouse and having other keys to move.

The dithering effect was really cool, but there was a lot of flickering that really took away from it. But over all it was a solid game.

@justin-c I just tested the game out in the browser to see what you meant. It seems to be a Chrome issue with Godot's webGL export. Try it again in Firefox, it worked perfectly for me there!

@gamepopper Thanks but I am real confused by the comment about handling turning/aiming with the mouse. That is the way the game is supposed to function. If you were playing in the web browser, try the download version.

@chainedlupine Using the mouse to turn left or right is fine, but turning up and down as well. It's moving forward and trying to aim in the same direction that I'm struggling with, I'm using aiming and moving being separate controls.

@gamepopper Oh I think I understand now.

So your issue with the game is that the controls are thus:

* WASD = Controls moving forward/backward and sideways (strafe)
* mouse = Controls both yaw (turning left/right) and pitch (up/down)

You'd rather the mouse control just either the yaw *or* the pitch, but not both?

@chainedlupine Oh, I'll give the game another go in a different browser then. I already beat it during my first playthrough, but I want to see what the game is supposed to look like.

@chainedlupine I might need to have another go, but yeah moving up and down is difficult with moving and aiming at the same time. It might just be me and trying a flying game with a mouse and keyboard instead of a gamepad.

The flat shading and color mapping and resolution scaling are all easy enough but I am definitely interested in how you did the dithering. Overall the game was very fun, simple to learn and master, with fun controls and a functional, pretty map. I liked that I could just fly around after winning and explore the full map. I also like that you got everything in (except music). Win condition, lose condition, clear path to victory. It doesn't drag on too long at all. It could have even been longer! Looking forward to that technical breakdown!

Nice graphics! I enjoyed the barrel roll, but I found myself accidentally doing it when I wanted to turn sometimes. I noticed that I could still win even if I lost both nests as long as I didn't die twice.

Game looked very cool, was a tad bit hard to control, but once I got used to it wasnt to bad, I loved the old N64 feel, good job guys!

Really reminded me of Starfox, and that shader styling was a really nice touch. Nice job!

Didn't worked on my webbrowser, so DLed it and runs really nice.
After dying 2-3 times with different control adjusments, I finally succeed to close that 2 damn portals.
I really needed that Mouse Vertical Flip, thanks to provide it : )

The controls are very difficult for me to master. I tried several times but I couldn't get the hang of it. However, the graphics in this game are top-notch, and the premise is interesting. This game has a lot of potential.
