Bjorn to Dance by Tomh

[raw]
made by Tomh for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Have you ever gone to bed and dreamt of something more? Well Oolag Bjørn thinks about it every night. His life goal… to be the number one dancer in the Pillage People Dance Troop.

https://youtu.be/PnF99rVH6Og

Help build his confidence as he rehearses his moves in his sleep. Then unleash all those gyrations and pirouettes by memorizing his dances. Mess up too much and you’ll lose the crowd.

Just remember, the dance world can be cruel and feel like you're STUCK IN A LOOP, but this is what you and Oolag have been training for.

So get out there and show everyone that you are Bjørn to Dance!

The graphics are charming and while the gameplay is a bit too traditional for my taste you can feel a lot of polish went into this. Overall a very solid entry!

10/10 pun and fits the lighthearted nature of the game. Great mood and just a fun idea to combine two things as different as vikings and rhythm games. The use of the viking shield and runes is clever and the overall UI layout is nicely designed. The only thing that seems to be missing from the UI would be some sort of indicator how much time is remaining on the current sequence.

Awesome art, loved Bjorn. Could have used some more music and more exciting sound effects for hitting the notes.

A big problem with the game I think is that its way too easy. I think it would be more fun if you ramped up the difficulty curve and didn't start with just one note.

This game is really goofy and I LOVE IT! A viking dancing, a pun in the title, and fun memory based gameplay? Sign me up! You could even take this further and make like a dance dance revolution version. The art was some of the best that I’ve seen, very polished and nice.

I'm normally pretty bad at Simon Says but Oolag has moved me to be a little better. Really a solid game. Your art is absolutely spectacular. Also big love to the sound design and the fact that I didn't actually have to be looking at the screen to tell what key to press which is always good for the easily distracted like me.

Now that's a fiiiiiiiiiiiine lookin' game ya got there.

I really love the personality of this one. The concept is absurd, and I just love the name Pillage People Dance Troop.

I do wish that the music played more of a role in the gameplay, but that might just be my personal preference towards rhythm games, haha.

Despite the simple gameplay, I can tell that this was polished to a T. It feels super smooth and seamless, very nice job!

Alright, I will say it now before anyone else: You will definitely be in the top 25!

So far the best game I've played this LD. Funny, great execution, amazing sounds and music, and most importantly catchy gameplay.

I would maybe change one thing though. The shield idea is really, cool but its placement unfortunately takes aways the attention from dancing Bjorn, which is shame, because I loved looking at him. So I would maybe put the shield/runes somewhere either around the character or right underneath him so we can both watch the runes and the guy :)

But overall, amazing and pleasant experience. Thank you for this.

A nice one, i like the viking dancing simon game. I think you can improve the game by rethinking the UI, it is rather scattered and it is difficult to enjoy of the animations at the same time. Maybe add an indication to know the player's turn. In any case, nice work.

Wow, this is a one very well rounded and polished game! Also love that you even have a leaderboard - makes me want to come back with a more competitive attitude :D

If there's anything to nitpick about it's that it would be a nice little addition to have the board light up when the pattern is presented to you, just to make sure the player doesn't mess up the timing.

All in all fantastic entry. Thank you for making Oolag Bjørn's dream a reality :3

Cool game, really nice art. Interesting you make a joke about how in dance, being stuck in a loop is a bad thing, but in the game it is a good thing. This does not seem to hold true in the gameplay since it is a standard memorization game, and the 'practice' you do is just a different level than the competition. Would have liked to see the gameplay design reflect your idea on the loop being a good thing. Maybe the competition could have been the same patterns but without prompts, or something else besides a level with different art.
I liked this game for what the gameplay offered, but would have liked to see more time spent on gameplay design rather than art and writing, since the gameplay is what everything must support imo.

Great idea of using "Simon say's" core! That core perfectly to the theme of the jam. But because of that player mostly look on runes, but I all time wanted to look on character, that may be fixed by reposition of the rune cyrcle. Sound very calming, dream-like I'll say. Great job!)

I got pretty high on the leaderboards, but man, it was a big blow to my scoring to drop from 10x multiplier to 1x! Looked super cool and the name is just too funny! Incredible amount of polish for a game jam game! I felt that the sleep sections and the performance sections were a bit disconnected, as the dance moves in the dream did not match the dance moves in the upcoming performance. Also as others have stated, showing the dance rune symbols on the shield took my focus away from the main character, which is a shame given how much effort has been put in its visual appeal. A solid entry with some room to grow as a post-jam game!

The Good
----
Nice game. It has a casual vibe and a classic memory puzzle style. The design and visuals is really good. The audio is also a very good aspect of the game.

The Bad
----
It lacks an incentive for the player to keep going. The leader board definitely helps, however it does not add anything game play wise. Also I cannot say I feel it fits the theme of the jam really well (you do repeat the pattern some times and play the same loop however it does not feel like one).

Other comments
----
Having said all of the above, I can say the game feels good to play and I like it.

Congrats on the game. Keep up the good work!

Graphics and GUI are spot on. I love the art style. The gameplay itself is simple but can get a little boring afterwards since it's basically just a Simon memory game. Nonetheless, the game feels really polished and has a really cool main character. It reminds me of old flash games from 10 years ago that I would play on Miniclip.

Love the idea! Funny premise, simple gameplay, solid audio, cute visuals. Overall a great and solid game. The only thing I could say that could be improved is to have some progression/unlocks (I know it does not necessarily fit with this style of game, but after a while it got pretty repetitive and I just stopped).
Still, very good game, and I got first on the leaderboard ^^

The game looks great, awesome graphics and a side of humour that I loved. But I was expecting something a bit more rythmic instead of the Simon game. It's not a bad idea for this theme but maybe it would be cool to change it up a little if you want to make something with this game in the near future.

Up the rythm for example. It would affect difficulty so maybe think of instead of delivering the sequence with sounds upon being pressed maybe do something like Guitar Hero or Piano Tiles 2 and synch the button presses with the rythm of music that plays in the background. Different musics will give you different tempos changing difficulty for you. The further you complete a sequence the further you get into a song. Just and idea but could work :)
Whatever you do, do not get rid of the viking dancing, make it funny like the Rasputin with Vladimir Putin video. Go wild.

Even then great idea and well executed

I didn't really get the difference between dream and waking sequences, it all seemed like the same game to me. Also the Simon Says mechanic left me not really getting anything new from this game, but that's just me

But the concept of a viking being so obsessed with dancing is fun, and the art is really good.

Good job :)

Nice one!

The mechanic is simple, but there are so many things done right here!
The main thing I loved was that each sequence is characterised by sound, symbol, color, and position. This is really really good for memorisation.
Nice art with a lot of great details, good sound and music choices.

The game feels repetitive fast as it is very easy and the difficulty goes up quite slowly. I did not really understood the use of such a complicated score system too but I think that's just me!

Thanks for the game I had fun 💕

I must admit I was expecting a rithym gameplay as well, but overral great work. The title got me laughing xD

Fun graphics and music, but I wish the gameplay ramped up in difficulty a bit faster! I played through a few loops but it didn't seem to be getting harder so I might have quit too soon based on the other comments?

I really liked the character, the sound whenever I pressed the keys felt with sort of a delay and pressing the inputs at the rate I was making them made me feel a bit like I was doing them wrong and that sort of tripped me later on onto making mistakes. All in all a nice simon says entry, good job! :)

I like the art. Never realized I've wanted to be a dancing Viking so thanks for that!

Really cute and funny theme. The graphics and sound design were really nice. Wish the difficulty curve was steeper as it felt slow in the beginning.

What a fun game! I liked your interpretation of the theme and the way you turned your interpretation into a fun and funny dance game. I see a lot of potential in your idea, please keep working on it, to make it grow and become something expanded! In general I liked the controls, the graphics, and especially the sound. It is very comfortable and rewarding to hit the button sequence. It is a very good experience. Good job.

This was a fun take on an old style of memory game that I love. I wasn't expecting gameplay like that after seeing the art / description of the game, but it was a pleasant surprise. I especially like that you put some nice custom UI in as well, the buttons are dope!
