Nasty while loops always getting your CPU stuck. Can you save it from overheating?

Accept or decline Variable updates to violate the while loop condition so your computer can snap out of it.

Keep an eye on the FanSpeed to prevent fast overheating.

Hard mode: Get the lowest score possible

Tip: (Hidden Secret when you manage to skip two loops with one variable update (very hard))

An almost perfect 2045 :) Just a few more points and I would have had a nice round 2048!!!

Nice game, very creative and I loved the BSOD sound right before the PC died, Awesome game.

Really like the audio for PlayRandomSound(). Those frustrating windows popping up right over where I was going to click, then the one I wanted disappearing! Still fun through the frustration. The commands between loops were fun too. I didn't realize I should have gotten a screenshot of my 4000+ score before I closed the page, so I could brag.

very nice old style dialog mess game, i like it a lot and played for too long (have to play other games too :)). in the default size, the font is a bit hard to read (maybe intentional) and it is quite strange, how much you can get stressed about these dialogs poping up and disapearing :-)

Haha, brilliant take on the theme, and fun game as well!

This might be one of the few games which is less stressful if played with muted sounds. But on the other hand, that would mean missing out on the nice RandomSounds :D

Very stressful (and fun) game - these Windows error sounds haunt us in our own personal stuck loop ;)

I loved this. It was pretty funny trying to frantically get out of the loop. Really good job! I only got a score of 35 but it was really interesting trying to manage different variables. I found it difficult to concentrate on the many pop-up windows so if that's the intent, A++. I do have to say, the colour changing background was difficult for me as well, it left me with a bit of a headache, although maybe playing fullscreen may have contributed to that too. Overall, great game!

Holly molly, you actually need to read warning/error messages? NO WAY! :smirk:

Simple, but slightly addictive game. It reminded me of the times when I had Windows 98 which was terribly infected with viruses. <stares blankly ahead with vietnam flashbacks>

And that's it, it's hard to add some suggestions, as the game seems to be a complete product. Very nice entry!

Fantastic game! Would have liked to see smaller quantities to reach, like (x < 100) for the first one? Seems like the best part of this game is the writing and humor, and waiting for random boxes to appear just delays that. Would really like to see this expanded on so that the player has more agency and there is more 'doing' vs waiting. Well done!

reallyFinalyVersion7 is the best joke of the jam. Really hits home.

This is a very neat idea! It took me a while to get to grips with it, but once I figured out what was going on, I thought the concept was very clever. :) Having your score also be a manipulatable variable was a very nice touch, and made for some very interesting choices!

The random background level was a liiiiiiiiiiittle hard on the eyes, but all-in-all I really enjoyed the personality as a whole. I appreciate the fact that the game actively tries to prevent you from processing information. It's pretty antithetical to typical game design, but in this case it works to great comedic effect. xD

Polish was also top-notch as well, awesome job!

This is a great game! Really good job applying the theme in the best way ive seen yet. Also, knowing your audience has a lot of developers and whatnot who get the humor. Just a great job all around. One thing though: Several times it said "while(x<500 || a<800)" but you had to get both numbers greater than. Either the operator should be "&&" or you should only need to get one number above the level!
🎤 Ausstein
05. Oct 2020 · 19:39 UTC
@remzo it is supposed to be or. if X or A or B is below the treshold the while loop continues ;)

Only once all three are above the treshold the while loop breaks
🎤 Ausstein
05. Oct 2020 · 19:42 UTC
@superunknown same as I said too remzo. it has to be "or" since the condition does not say when the loop breaks but when the loop continues.

if X or A or B is below the treshold the while loop continues ;)

Only once all three are above the treshold the while loop breaks

05. Oct 2020 · 20:09 UTC
@remzo yeah while loops are confusing and you can easily mess them up, which is the whole point of the game :D

If it is of any consolation, I showed the game to my mother who has been coding for over 30 years now, and she said shouldn't it be "and"

Wow, I'm blown away by the level of polish in something so simple. One little exploit I enjoyed finding early on was that if I simply pressed ok on all the popups as quickly as possible I could get through "stage" after stage with relative ease and increase my score very rapidly. My first playthrough ended with a score of over 50,000!

Fantastic all around. Clever (and frustratingly familiar ;)) gameplay. The graphics and audio really help tie everything together. Lots of small, nice touches, like the BSOD. Sometimes it was a little annoying when the pop-ups covered up the relevant variables - but perhaps this was an intentional annoyance.

This was hilarious- I love the loading screen text. It perfectly coincides with how I felt during the game jam. Heh! What a fun little bit of core gameplay. The sounds were dead on too. It was simple, but really well done! NICE! A small suggestion, I think my boyfriend would love this game, but that color changing background would eff him up- maybe make a smol accessibility option that mutes the colors or does some other.. distracting thing?

Very cool! I like how you started throwing extra things to manage into the mix later on like more variables and managing brightness. It's one of those games that's annoying, but in a good way. This idea lends itself very well to forcing the player to make snap-decisions; "Do I get extra score at the cost of fan speed?" In practice, for me at least, the popups happen too fast to do this kind of management, and I just closed anything that seemed remotely bad. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not; the game seems well-balanced so maybe you already realized it's more fun to have everything happen faster.

The audio fit really well and the humor was super-relatable to anyone that's ever participated in a game jam! Good job!

Do you guys think a version with changing font color would be better? Or should I do something entirely different?

@rhoff95

Thx for the Feedback!

I already decreased the first loop from 1000 to 500.

The problem with going even further is that I run out of jokes too fast :D Plus I wanted to give the player some time to really understand the concept before I start spamming him with pop ups.
It is always hard to find the right balance for a game jam audience. You seem to have gotten the concept instantly, but that is not true for everyone. Introducing even more would have made the game too confusing for most I think. Although I also think that it would be more fun.

@rein

is the font a problem at the default size or at fullscreen. Maybe I should add that I recommend fullscreen

Really great game. Love how you have used the theme and built a code loop with references to Ludum Dare.

AMAZING GAME!!!! Loved everything, the humour is on point. Maybe it could use some balancing to make sure you can't lose to bad luck, although I'm pretty sure it was my fault lol

Very clever concept, and the gameplay was surprisingly fresh for a game about while loops

I loved all the little details, like the flavortext commands being executed -- "Hiding Easter Eggs" -- complete with typing sound effects, and all the random changes happening during each for loop.

Awesome job!

Too much fun! This game is brilliant. Simple but smart and effective mechanic. Very polished entry that I will want to keep playing. It's just absurd in an endearing way. Made me laugh (then cry). Well done. :D

@ghuyajil No cheat you need to get to loop number 6-7 and then have some luck with the multipliers. They can go over 2x in the later loops. If you have a score of maybe 4000 going into loop 6 you only need to find 3-4 good multipliers.
In a dev version that was not much different to the current version I scored over 700 000 which is just 3 more good multipliers.

The growth starts mostly linear but it goes exponential rather quickly ;)

Cool game! It takes some time to figure out what is going on, but once you get it, it goes smoothly.

I love the artstyle, especially Win3.11 - styled dialog boxes and most certainly the blue screen of death :) Nice job!

That's some 5's for the theme and innovation, rest isn't bad either. I have no constructive feedback to provide: this game is just complete.

Brilliant but also waaaay too hard waaaaay too fast. I barely won round 1 and round 2 made me hide behind my chair so I wouldn't have to deal with it. Nice sound design though!

Nice little game, it only costs you 5 minutes and a few hundred photoreceptor cells.

Eventually I figured out how it really works (didn't read description), smart game.

I'm one of the few participants here who has 0 knowledge of coding and maybe that's why it isn't causing the SAN damage that my coder is apparently suffering at this very moment.

I immediately had to ask them what || even meant. Niche but funny.

I love a lot of things here: the humor, the metalanguage, the risk/reward thing where sometimes you have to lower a variable (or even the score!) in order to keep the system working...

PS: as someone said above, playing fullscreen on a 21:9 screen causes some popups to appear out out reach.

I liked how the graphics of the game was designed to give an authentic computer terminal theme as this was great for expressing the mood of the game. I also found the idea of having to deal with multiple popups in a limited amount of time to be pretty challenging as it forced me to make split-second decisions and sacrifices without much forethought. The gameplay was quite adrenaline inducing and fun. However, I did not like the fact that there was no evident way to decrease the CPU temperature. I disliked this because I felt like I did not have much agency to postpone defeat as my skills alone could not stop the CPU temperature increasing indefinitely.

P.S. The word "program" in the game is spelled incorrectly.

Cool, challenging, innovative, funny game :)

Pretty simple, in terms of game play and graphics, but it does everything very well. Easy to grasp the concept, and super fun in all its hectic glory.

Didn't play for too long, but I enjoyed the whole time, and was satisfied when I lost :p

Perfect difficulty, and the difficulty curve is great.

Music is kinda calming for how hectic the game is, but still fits somehow.

Innovative? Definitely.

Good job!

I'm honestly kind of astounded at the mileage you managed to get from this game. I have no idea how just pressing OK or Cancel managed to be fun, but this game is legit. One of the simplest and straightforward concepts I've seen so far this LD, but it just goes to show that execution is key. Great entry!

Chmm, that game is really fun, good for you :). Almost nailed that theme, but it still very thing what I imagine as this theme.. Inovative and good gameplay for me. Not too horiblle art but next time try invest time more into art. Overall game is very very good, it is very good work, I love it.

This... was amazing! I could legitimately just sit and listen to the music loop for a couple of hours and just chill out. It reminds me vaguely of like, N64 Zelda Ocarina of Time running across Hyrule Field and just being young Link and smashing pots and stuff. The amount of "+= <negative number>" I got was ridiculous, and I still managed to get about 4600 points on my first try, not too shabby.

This was fantastic! Each pop-up made me more and more anxious and it became overwhelming quickly, which is good! Definitely a unique idea for being stuck in a loop, I never even thought about while loops being a possibility. Absolutely nailed it with this game, I really love it!

This is brilliant - the concept is fairly simple, yet it becomes more and more stressful very quickly, and you have to pay very close attention to what you are clicking on. One thing I would suggest though is to make the distinction between * and + a bit more clear; there were cases where they looked very similar and I wasn't sure which it was.

Very funny, wasn't expecting this game to be what it is at all xD Loved the backing track and audio for the game, it really solidified the light hearted experience. Gameplay was frantic and exciting, if intentionally stress inducing. A little hard to read some of the messages sometimes before they disappeared but otherwise perfect execution!
