A Car With No Name by ShaunJS

[raw]
made by ShaunJS for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

It felt good to be out of the raiiin!

Journey through a harsh desert in a somewhat prone-to-misrepair land speeder. Pop the hood and perform repairs, gather scrap and water to survive.

Move with WSAD, toggle selected items with E, pick things up with SPACE. Repair/Harvest with Q.

The landspeeder has cruise control, so set it speeding off while you check the radar for goodies!

This is all the result of the most frustrating Ludum Dare I've ever had! So many hours lost to obscure collision problems, leaving me so CLOSE to being able to execute on the more fun aspects of the game idea that the foundation was necessary to support.

Sadly in the end, there's not a lot of "Game" here compared to my usual entries. Originally you were supposed to reach an eventual goal, but instead you just see how far you can get across an endless desert.

That said I think it proves the potential of its concept! I was dying to add local multiplayer and lots of fun things to discover in the desert! And the foundation is there to support those things but as standard, there just wasn't the time. Too much ambition in this one, I'm sure I will learn nothing from this mistake.

Enjoy and feel free to comment with what sort of things you think would be cool to see out in the desert.

I like the concept. However, there are a few issues. Water doesn't actually do anything (you are fine even with negative water). You can leave the speeder, and if it's going too fast you essentially softlock the game since you can't get to it and nothing spawns when you're not in it. Getting run over crashes the game. That said, these are the only real issues I have; if you had more time to polish and maybe add some more life to the desert this would have been pretty amazing!

I’m going to give this a go in the morning, but it’s to have potential. Maybe someone can make this it’s own full fledged project?

Saw the stream. Fun and unique base mechanics, but repetative gameplay. Great Job!

There are a couple of crashes, otherwise, I love the concept and would want someone to take this to another level :)

Great potential game Shaun! Not much of a game yet, but it still feels great to control and I appreciate all the tiny details. After watching your entire stream I must say that it is incredibly satisfying to finally try it out myself :)

Great looking game - ofcourse there is not much to do but the concept proves itself. I hope you will make something bigger of it!

Great concept, wish there was more to it.
If you do continue with this I'd like to see the results!

Surprisingly fun to get going really fast then hop out of the driver seat to check the mini map. Can tell it was supposed to have water resources so I'm sure there's much more you wanted to add. Definitely feels like you're in a desert though haha. Could see myself playing a full version of this for hours. Awesome stuff!

Really enjoyed watching some of the stream, and wish I could have participated this year (stupid masters thesis). Any chance you would do a debrief video similar to your "Making of PokeyPoke" videos? I'm not a great programmer/artist/designer and like getting to see how ideas actually get implemented.

Good concept. My only real issue was that the character movement sensitivity was too fast, and controlling the little guy just didn't feel smooth. The pixelart car was very well done, it even had some dynamic shadow.

i love this idea, it suits so well with the theme and it really would be a beautiful game with more time spent on it. i believe if you keep adding stuff to the dessert for players to explore, the game will be so much fun :D

lots of potential with this one! I really enjoyed the graphics (reminds me of FTL) and I loved the little details like opening the hood and messing around with the fiddly bits.

Wow, very sophisticated and impressive for only 48 hours. The art is gorgeous, and the game play is minimal like you said, but it is really enjoyable interacting with the game's world. Very good work!

Cool idea for a game and the main mechanics work well. Having more items or events happen would make it a lot more fun, but I get that time constraints messed with the plans you had for this. The text was actually pretty small for me and I couldn't figure out how to get the game to go fullscreen so I had a little trouble seeing some things.
