We Must Protect Lich House! by madjackmcmad

[raw]
made by madjackmcmad for Ludum Dare 37 (COMPO)
Twin stick horde mode defensive arcade action! How's that for buzzwords? Play as a lich who rules over a single mighty room. Balance the THREAT of traps and guardians with the HYPE of shiny treasure for heroes to steal. Keep heroes enticed and slaughter them all, because if you're too stingy they'll just give up and seal you away for an eternity of boredom.
Best with gamepad, pretty solid with keyboard. If you download the source note that the game is called "Ludum39" because I'm dumb.
Edit v1: Renamed the project to Ludum37, fixed bug where some updates didn't cost souls, and added mac, linux, and web gl builds.

For some reason, souls don't get spent on some upgrades. Is it a bug or a feature? Besides some balance issues, this game looks very nice.

This was a badass twin-stick with a really impressive feature set for a 48-hour game. I loved buying the upgrades, and the idea of building hype by dropping in lures for the enemies was awesome. When those MFers stole the weapons or tomes and hulked out was a great moment.

I am amazed that you build this on your own in 48 hours. I For me it was a bit too hard, but I really appreciate your work. Go on!

Hahaha lmao this game is ridiculous. There are some serious balancing issues in here, and those poor, foolish heroes have suffered greatly because of it. At one point I gained enough money in a single wave to spawn 20 destroyer of mens. I quit after that point because the game would crawl to under 1 FPS with all of the projectiles and enemies on-screen.
With that said, it's hella fun. If you could fix those balancing and performance issues, add some music, and maybe mouse aiming for those without controllers (like me; 8-direction aiming with the keyboard isn't that great), you'd have a real gem on your hands.
Maybe add some restrictions on tower placement, because the easiest way to become overpowered is to spam a bunch of towers in a cluster together. Since the enemies can only kill one tower at a time, getting attacked by twenty at the same time pretty much guarantees they won't make any progress. Maybe make the enemies stronger too.
Definitely one of may favorite entries so far! Great work!

@Alex thank you very much! Once you get to placing multiple Doom of Mens (Dooms of Menses?) the game is basically over, the heroes can't compete, the physics can't keep up, and the fun checks out for the evening. Still, I'm glad you had a good time!

I'm basically on the hype wagon with this game, A surprising number of features have made it into the game, i really enjoyed playing it, it took me a while to realise i could actually fire at things with space. all was not lost XD

Give me a total 80ies arcade feeling.
If I was 12 again, I would spend my whole pocket money for it.

maybe a bug - I downloaded the windows version, with an xbox 360 controller i couldn't seem to fire with any button although could move. in the web version it worked ok. Anyway great work, impressive amount of features for 48 hours and nice retro styles.

Was having a great time but seemed to freeze on stage 7 :( I've seen a few games do the whole defender the dungeon schtick, but I haven't seen a twinstick do it and it was a blast.

Nice work - a lot of content, and it looks, sounds, and feels nice. I was terrible at dodging the projectiles while baiting the foot soldiers. Curse that thief, too!
