This is my 2nd Ludum Dare, and first Compo ! I hope you'll like the game as much as I enjoyed making it !

Many many thanks to everybody who followed the development in the website feed.

Special thanks to all my friends for giving insightful feedback.

Feel free to share your scores in the comments, you can unlock the Time trial mode once you reach the bottom ;)

Tools used : - Unity 2019.4 - Blender - Audacity - FL Studio - Inkscape

NB : The Windows port was made after the end of the Compo, and includes a tiny bugfix (players could go above ground through a small invisible hole). Plays exactly the same, but if really you want the TRUE compo game, play the WebGL verison.

Got me going for quite a while. Some interesting mechanics, especially it was really cool to max out (almost) all upgrades. Well done on getting so much implemented in only 48 hours. This project is a very curious showcase of simple systems, and the polish in this entry is awesome. What a fun game.

Played for some time! Enjoyed myself, the mechanics were simply taught and all felt wonderful. The amount of polish is outstanding. Though a few things do feel mildly repetitive, like waiting on the camera to pan up. Since it happens every time and not at only high scores it feels like punishing them by wasting time. Still, very impressed with the game, great jorb!

Amazing. Unique take on the theme. I love that the only control is pointing the mouse; it's so simple the game doesn't need instructions or a tutorial. I'm impressed that you managed to add a whole upgrading system within the 48 hours.

I love time trial. It adds a different dynamic to the game. At first, conserving water is important, so I was more strategic in where I would expand my roots. For time trial, I already had so many upgrades I didn't need to worry about water. It was just a matter of quickly moving my mouse to the right spot.

I would only add a button to slow down the roots. Later in the game I got stuck against obstacles a lot.

I saw your post on the main page and it got me interested. This is a really great experience. it got me playing for a long time trying to see how far would I get, what I would discover and how tall could my plant get. You should really invest on it after the jam is over and maybe do a port to mobile or something like that because it is an overall great experience, congratulations.

I saw this on front page and as I had similar game idea I had to play this.

Well done game. I made a "more roots" build and had fun all the way to the end. Nice idea and well put together. Clean and finished look.

Awesome. The controls feel very smooth. As others pointed, it is a bit repetitive to wait for camera to go back up, especially when you dig really deep.

Perfect score. Wish there was an easy mode where I just let the tree go straight down (maybe a drill mechanic with health) or maybe a mode with just the acid obstacle.

Loved this. The art, music and mechanics are great. The progression feels meaningful, only complaint is that I wish the roots that grow off the main one would tend towards water pockets a bit more because they seemed to just miss which felt a bit unfair because I had no control over them. I lost a decent chunk of time playing this game though so you're onto a winner!

Everything works great, there's a ton of polish in everything, and the game is sincerely just fun. I love this one. Actually spent the time playing through until I'd unlocked everything.

Stronger root was the least necessary upgrade, I found — it would have been nice for that to come into play more.

I also was a little disappointed that I got stuck at the midway point for most of the game, but at some point I reached some kind of breaking point and afterwards was able to make it all the way to the end without any trouble, so I didn't really get that sort of "ugh this section is rough" about any of the latter half.

Also, due to the speed upgrade in particular, and the fact that the root doesn't slide along objects towards your mouse, once you're very upgraded your only real threat is your ability to avoid obstacles. So the kind of game it was really changed at that point.

Anyway, I had a lot to say specifically because I had such a blast with this game. I'm sure any of the stuff I brought up would be the kind of thing refined from development happening over a longer period of time, haha. For the time you had, what is here is absolutely flawless. Thanks for the fun!

Loved that game so much, that after beating it for the first time, I decided to try to get the fastest time I can. In 40 minutes managed to get 44.4s time. I got screwed by rng once and clipped the wall at the very end, so I guess there's still room for improvement, but that time is definitely hard to beat. Good luck for anyone who attempts to beat my record, and special thanks to the game author!

This is a very strong game. Aesthetically, it's internally consistent and beautiful. The gameplay is satisfying and interesting. Making the root speed an upgrade was particularly clever--it means that higher-level players get to go much faster through stuff they've already played. I don't think I've seen a game quite like this.

The best entry I've seen for far by quite a bit: Very innovative concept but still fun and challenging, really satisfying procedural root growth logic, ultra satisfying progression, totally on theme. The only thing holding it back in my opinion is the graphics (maybe there could also be a better water disappering animation) but it's just because everything else is so good!

Wow! Easily one of my favourite games so far. This is so zen, so chill, and so satisfying. Watching the mini-roots fan out and dig into the earth and supply you with water just made me feel so... goooood. I would love to play this on Mobile as like a zen mindfulness game - especially if it let you take a picture of your root system if you wanted  really good job mate (and compo as well?!?), well done!

P.s. I played it so much that I realised if you skirt around on the surface at the start, you can grow roots into space :joy: see attached

Wow this is insanely well done. I could compliment a BUNCH of stuff in this game but others have already done it. So im just gonna say this was one of the best games I played during all of my jams.

Btw, I neglected the upward momentum upgrades until I got to around 500m, then I bought like 3 of them at once and my speed downwards skyrocketed and I momentarily beat the game in one attempt. Dont know if should work like that judging from description of the upgrade.

This might be my favorite game out of the entries I've tried so far. Really excellent job. It was super chill, it was nice that the worst thing that could happen was that you just didn't earn that many flowers on a particular run, so progression was steady. The central loop was addicting, and the upgrade system was a great companion to that. I don't really know what else to say, it was just a fantastic experience.

Beautiful, relaxing game. Everything fits perfectly, the art, sounds, music and gameplay. Also, it feels very rewarding seeing your plant grow bigger as you progress.

As a suggestion, I think the grain effect isn't really adding anything to the experience (but I haven't seen the game without it, so what do I know lol)

Great job!

This was a very relaxing game to play, and I have to admit, this is probably the best game of the jam that I have so far played. The way you approached the theme is brilliant, and I like that every time there are new obstacles underground, it made the game feel a bit less repetitive. Once I had an occasion in which I got stuck for a few seconds when I hit the end of a water bottle and the root's ends started piling up a little, but other than that this was hands down an amazing game. Tres bien, Pierre!

I think this is my favourite Ludum Dare 48 entry (so far). Incredible! Interesting mechanics there. Game is simple and quite relaxing to play, and it's really satisfying to get upgraded.

I enjoyed this so much I started to wonder, what if the plant doesn't get reset every time but instead it actually grows bigger and bigger after every attempt? And the root that was used prior doesn't get reset or removed either and it actually stays behind in the ground, but maybe let it blend into the background or something and we'll eventually end up with a nice plant with a network of roots in the ground.

This game is totally my thing! I would play this over and over and over again. Perfect 5/5 from me!!!

This game is really fun, and is surprisingly balanced. The upgrades feel like they flow really well, making progression really fun.

It's cool that the time trial mode pretty much makes it a completely different game, it too being very fun.

However would be nice if there was a reset button, plus being able to skip the end grow animation once you've unlocked the time trial mode.

Also, the collision shapes seem to be convex, even if the visual shapes are concave on some objects. It makes you get stuck in thin air sometimes when you try to pixel surf them to shave time.

Here's a very painful demonstration of that happening: https://streamable.com/2wplkg
at around 45 seconds the root just gets stuck. It sucks because I think I had a sub 43 second run going there

@thegreenworm I've been trying to get that time again, but it seems almost impossible to get the RNG right  At a certain point it becomes a gambling game just about obstacle placement.

It would be nice if most obstacles had small hard to pass through passages spread out on them, so you have a chance to continue a speedrun without just having to give up.

Also I noticed there were quite a lot of those ghost collisions on the last part of the map, and the green slime sometimes covers the actual walls of objects so it's easy to accidentally crash into them.

The outline of the striped brown shells become harder to see once you get deeper down, which makes them hard to avoid.

However those things don't really matter in the non time trial version :)

Also one last point is that it'd be cool if the game was in a portrait resolution, so you could see a bit further down. This would be perfect for mobile!

I got really stuck with this game, dang

I like the mood of this game a lot! There's plenty of potential in this.
It has the addictive qualities of a game about collecting things, and also of an incremental game with upgrades.
It can be super chill, yet also has the speedrun mode.
You should add more procedural details to the plant that grows! Maybe even tweak it's appearance based on the nutrients your root collected.

Your game is really relaxing while still providing challenge and a reason to come back. I love the progression as each skill improvement make a difference. In a way, we are seeing evolution in progress, each generation of tree adapting to its environment to thrive and grow bigger.

This is addictive. I really appreciate that it saved my progress and I could come back to it later too!

I think it's safe to say I quite enjoyed this! I only have good things to say about this game, but I'll emphasize one: adding a time trial as a balancing feature is a stroke of genius. The game pretty much ends when it should, upgrade-wise - you're just more likely to win than to lose at a certain point. Instead of painstakingly balancing for the point to be near the end of the upgrade chain (and risking losing out on players who aren't willing to get there, too), the game just switches its goal, and you can choose whether to continue or not. Just amazing design.

Other than that, all aspects of the game just shine, really: the graphics are great (the offshooting roots, the main root filling up as the camera pans back to the top, the water level display); the music is a nice background bop that doesn't overstay its welcome; the sounds effects are on point; the upgrade system explores the core features nicely. Really great work!

I really like the concept and it's a nice implemantion of your idear, specially when you are alone. And it's addictive.

This might be my favorite submission! It's very relaxing, absolutely gorgeous, and has that "just one more round" addiction. My only complaint is that I felt like a lot of runs could just be stacked against you from the start and end very early, leading to a slow start in the beginning. I still love it though, great job!

I love this game! Music, graphics, vibe! It is reallz cool, that the root movements are so smooth, it really helps to keep the control over the roots.
I actually managed to finish the game a feel really proud of that, thank you very much! :D

10/10, would drink water again. Cool game, hard to believe it is a compo game. The graphics look nice and the music is nice to hear for a long time. The mechanics are well polished. I enjoyed the upgrade system, clearly made a diffrence. I like that you added time scoring, hope you can add a leaderboard later, so I can embarass myself more publicly :D Fun and well made game, I recommend playing to everyone!

This is absolutely wonderful, feels so great to play! Count me in for wanting to see that devlog/making of video.

Since everything is so amazing, I'll try to find one thing to nitpick. The animation for the plant growing is pretty slow, especially once we're in time trial mode and we've already seen it grow fully. Perhaps skip that animation during time trial? Other than that, wonderful!

A tiny detail I want to compliment is that the first time I saw my mini roots going towards poison, I got nervous that they'd hit it. But you thought of that and made sure that small roots won't grab poison, nice!

Tested your game on stream earlier : <https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1007665137> (0:02:30 -> 0:33:00 roughly)

Feedback done on stream (from what i can remember, could be incomplete) :

**Positive :**
- Nice mechanic & concept
- Diegetic UI with the water in the root was a good idea
- Nice mood overall
- The roots spreading really looks good, plant growing looks good
- Time trial mode once we've reached the end was a nice addition

**Negative :**
- Progression curve is too slow early & too fast in the end
- Lacks feedback to know how much 'flower' we've collected so far in a run
- Strong roots upgrade is near useless as only damage source (green water) barely is a danger
- Graphics (except root & plant) could be improved by being a bit more detailed
- Root getting hard blocked by obstacles didn't feel good, would be nice to move slowly along them rather than being blocked because the angle isn't perfect

A really good compo game overall.

I loved how the game changed from find the water with the main root, to go down down down, avoid the obstacles while the smaller root will provide for you! Very nice to have two strategies in one game.

The worst thing is how much it's a hog on my system (web/chrome/macos) the best thing is the autosaved progress that kicked in when I had to kill the tab and reload! I am very interested on how you did that!
Note: the deepest is not saved so at first I thought it did not work !

You definitely got me hooked with this game. Love the aesthetic and the slow, peaceful progress deeper into the ground. Such an impressive compo game, it felt so polished. The gameplay itself was very relaxing, even when you get to the timed mode a the end there's something soothing about the whole process. Absolutly addicting! The game concept kept me playing for a long time. Figuring out the mechanics and extra skills makes this game fun. The grafics and sound design are awesome and fit together really well.
it'sso satisfying to watch and hear the plant growing, it doesn`t even feel bad when you are out of water to grow

What I miss is a fullscreenmode and the tree growing animaion could be faster in the late game.

This is my favorite game so far. Thank you very much!

04. May 2021 · 18:39 UTC
@m1nd0frafa FYI, I didn't make the game fullscreenable by design, as the different resolutions would give an unfair advantage to certain resolutions, giving them a better view of what's bellow/on the side. But these are fair points I'll definitely adress in the post jam version. I'm glad you liked it !

So cool! Very calming to play, and music is good. I like how you can replenish your water as you go - adds a bit of strategy. The music ending/playing that alt sound when you 'die' is a nice touch. Like the variety of cool upgrades too.

It took me a while, but I won! :)

Incredibly well done! Great take on the theme. I appreciate the simplicity in the controls. The gameplay is soothing but interesting. The upgrades were well thought out and each felt significant enough that I had to think about which upgrade to use next. Impressive for only 48 hours! Great job!

This was such a interesting one! At first I thought it was just going to be a relaxing game and not really skill based since the upgrades allow you to go farther each time but you really need to pick your paths and it gets going quick after a couple speed upgrades! The added trial mode after you finish is a nice addition that adds more replay value and skill based gameplay by trying to beat your time (or others)

The art and music/sounds set a calming mood and the gameplay was engaging. Everything was really clear what the player needed to do without instruction and the upgrades seemed well balanced. There was a lot of care put into small details like returning back to the surface + the rising sound effect, the plant and flowers growing, and the different environments. Very well done!

Might be good to detail what exactly the upgrades do in your game description, especially since the "upwards momentum" one is unintuitive (and also balanced oddly to be a downwards momentum upgrade, as you mentioned).

What a lovely and perfect entry. From now after playing it, the games seems flawless for me : intuitive gameplay that don't need a tutorial, an original gameplay which stick so well with theme and graphics, and with it you managed to add a well-balanced upgrading system where each upgrade feel useful for your progression.

Very polished and cool! The root mechanic is the kind of thing people want to implement, but rarely risk in a gamejam. I think the 'upward momentum' is a bit flawed, considering that upgrading past a certain treshold dramatically increased my downward speed as well (one level took me from struggling to hit 600 to hitting the bottom at 2000) (i'm sure someone else must've mentioned this as well) Would love to see dynamic elements like worms, moles or rival plants racing you for the water deposits, if you ever consider expanding it some more!

Probably one of the best entry I've played yet! This was a delightful experience and I'm still amazed by the work you put into this game in this short amount of time! Visuals and sounds where perfect for this chill mood, the fact that it works like a 'rogue-lite' is very clever and make the game really addictive! Staggeringly good entry, as others have said very addictive. Once I knew there was an end I had to reach it!
5/5 across the board from me.
Tiny tiny change (and I may be wrong) would be if a sub-root could save you in the second after death.. it seemed like occasionally one would reach water just after I died.

Good game - engaging gameplay, good sound design and music, simple but consistent art style all form a solid game feel.

Progression seems just a bit too slow for a jam game, especially at first, but might have been because I was neglecting upward momentum upgrade, which seems to influence downward speed as well.

Root retracting animation at the end of rounds is feels nice, though the flower growth animation could be sped up, at least in time trial mode.

Despite minor nitpicks, the game was enjoyable and engaging.

P.S. there seems to be a bug with flower count disappearing during game-win animation and so not visible in upgrade shop afterwards.

15. May 2021 · 19:23 UTC
I really enjoyed this. The controls can be a bit wonky when you get stuck, especially when you get the high speed upgrades. Not sure how I'd fix it though, but maybe if the root was able to slide along rocks a little bit, so you're not quite stuck even if you're hugging a rock? It felt like a really polished game in general, and a bit out of the ordinary. It did remind me of old MS-DOS shareware days when people were making all these cave games with destructible terrain. :)
