The Mine to Sentience by LDJam user 184711
This was our first Ludum Dare and we had a lot of fun. Time to go to bed.
The Mine to Sentience

Looking for the ultimate robot experience? We have something to offer! Our little robot has a big dream: to attain sentience. His code tells him that all he has to do is collect gems in the mine. Wait - what?!
Help the robot get deeper and deeper into the mine and collect gems. But beware of the dangerous earthquakes! We recommend you to take a little shopping tour in the local store to better arm yourself against them.
Controls:
Move - WASD/Arrows
Jetpack - X/K
Parachute - C/L
Pause - Esc
Advise:
One critique in the reviews is that the fall damage is too punishing - for that buying some shield upgrades in the shop can help a lot!

Absolutely love the art though, it's wonderfully cute!
PS: I am surprised that such a nice game with so few rates. You have to rate more on others game so that you can get more rates! Check the smart balance for reference. Go let more people see your fantastic work.
It's simple but really interesting game loop and I didn't anticipate the earthquake fact so it was a really good surprise too. Maybe some tweaking on basic moves could improve game feel and make your game more enjoyable. Also add some layers of sounds and effect when you're going deeper and deeper in the cave could improve the experience, but the truth is I enjoyed my twenty minutes on this game, so... Well done!
Really nice game. It is always incredible to see that people have time to implement this kind of money and upgrade system, great job! The game had great looks and feel, but the fall damage seemed too punishing. I could swear that sometimes I took fall damage for just jumping in place and it was instant game over for falling too many times. The parachute seemed little bit too expensive for what its worth. But these are just minor balance issues and it is perfectly understandable that a Jam Game does not have excellent balance.
Other minor thing: The hitbox of the player should have been little bit smaller (google players advantage). It felt annoying to bump to the corners of the platforms.
Great game, cheers, see you in the next jam!
I was scared when I first heared the earthquake lol.
Once you get that sweet jetpack, life becomes much more easier.
Unfortunately I didn't manage to become sentient
That said, cute game, and it was enjoyable otherwise.
I really enjoyed the art and the music.
The momentum of the character really makes it hard (for me at least) to do precise jumps.
Also, getting on the brown platforms can sometimes be extremely difficult.
Overall, I had a blast playing it ! The jetpack and the parachute are nice features for a game based on going deeper and deeper.
you should add the esc key to the shop, I was sitting there for 5 seconds or so trying to close it with escape then just walked off to realize it would close on its own.
The brown platforms were a bit annoying to deal with since the robots momentum made it hard to position to get on top of them. The earthquakes kind of made them worse since the game is rushing you to escape.
the game needs transitions between screens, it'll feel better if something occurs before the entire screen changes like a fadeout for reaching the top, or a rockfall for running out of time.
The art is definitely the strongest part of the game, though i do have to ask: why does the robot look like a rundown mess compared to his shop icons?
However, probably it should have been a standard feature! Thanks for the advise.
Yeah, the parachute is too expensive, you are right. The jetpack is even a better version of the parachute, so it makes sense to save for it. ^^
We will google "player advantage". Thanks for your review.
- Really cool liked the different items
- I died a lot maybe increase the health a bit
- Music was cool
The system of upgrade is very useful :)
Controls is nice and I like graphism and sound design.
It's adictive. But the death is very punishing for the effort :p When you must restart from scratch your sad. However, I like challenge... so I retried !
So great job :)
Sometimes the procedural generation make level with a plateform that block the way to down. But it's doesn't break the game. We can at the surface, buy new upgrade or nothing and go down again :)
Looks like other have mentioned that the fall damage is annoying at the start, so I'll just say +1 to that
The random platforms work and look really good!
For a jam game I probably would have made the total play time shorter, but I did get to the end and enjoyed all of it! The jetpack and ghost jetpack are cool because they create different phases of the game where you are kinda trying to do different things.
Solid submission, good work!
