Boombox by auxC

Hey! We made a game about defusing a bomb again.

This time we'll have you click the fuse to put it out! The trick? The bomb is inside a box or two, you'll need to take it out first.

Good luck!

We have features:

  1. A couple dozen tricky boxes to open
  2. Some puzzling and some reflexing to do
  3. Crazy rotations
  4. One bomb about to blow

And simple controls:

  1. WASD to rotate the box
  2. Click to use the key

And these gifs:

boombox_openopen.gif

boombox_nextbox.gif

As always, have fun and thanks for playing!

This game is really fun and well polished! Love the little touches such as the key opening locks feedback, or when you miss and it makes a wood "blam" sound. The hard levels are sure a good challenge and I was thrilled all the way through. Keep it up!

This was a really fun and addictive game. Decided that I wanted to beat the aaargh stage, it was long, my eyes are now bleeding, but it was worth it for the rush of accomplishment at the end. Thanks for a great game :)

This was well done! I went through difficulties getting the hang of things, and managed to beat the hardest level. Took a while (test of endurance), but I did it!

One attempt I managed to get break the game. I think I accidentally clicked on the box while it was coming out of the one I just unlocked. It made the box stop "unboxing", and I couldn't access any of the locks :/

Other than that and another attempt where the box was oddly rotated (maybe the same issue as above?), things went smoothly! Had fun, and the music/graphics were excellent.

Had tons of fun, great job!

Amazing work! The game feels so polished!
Visually very appealing, SFX sound amazing, the mechanics feel solid and satisfying.
The level difficulty feels a little unbalanced though, I think level "easy" could have less boxes and make "normal" what easy currently is, basically shift one difficulty level down one.

Great game fun to play!

I owned this game. I made it my bitch!

Joking, It was challenging, and has a kind of Rubix feel to it in terms of remembering where keys and locks are. As someone mentioned in my Stream Chat while I was playing: THIS IS EXTRA JUICY. You don't see many games with this level of detail and fun, made in a weekend.

SUPER AMAZING GAME!!!

This game makes you feel like the hero of a 90s terrorist movie, trying to defuse a bomb in the last few seconds. I felt like "AAARGH" even on medium difficulty :japanese_goblin: Great job!

Despite being very rage-inducing (especially when you mess up the easiest lock 3 times in a row) it was really fun trying to crack all of those boxes! The fact that you start with such a long fuse at the beginning, and it burns out almost immediately is very deceiving and I like it! Makes your heart bit go way up when you cracking the last boxes.

Lots of fun and a cool concept. The color-coded locks seem simple but had enough to keep it interesting. I did have trouble with the controls feeling inverted and felt like I never got into the groove because of it. The animations added a lot and gave you a nice peak at what was around the next side, which was clever.

I love the deeper and deeper theme put to some creative angle. Going deeper and deeper into the boxes was engaging and I was very pleasantly surprised by the different mechanics the difficulties offered. I love the way the box turns around, I can keep track of the keyholes by being organized with my movement. FUN GAME <3

Every once in awhile you come across a game that makes you feel incompetent as an indie dev. This game makes me wonder if maybe I should have been a banker or an architect. To think that a work of art like this was produced in such a short time, boggles my mind. You guys are amazing! Thank you for both inspiring and humbling me.

Probably one of the better games I've played this jam! The different types of chests/boxes were a nice touch, the music - especially the percussion, added a nice bit of suspense. The controls were smooth. The moving keys in hard difficulty went a bit too quick for me at first but I managed to get used to them. Curious to see what else you'd be able to do with this concept. Highly addicting!

Nice and simple, but effective. Controls were intuitive and worked well for the gameplay. The sounds/animations were really solid, especially for when you miss-click and it bonks against the box. The fuse volume getting louder the lower it was was also a nice touch.

Pretty impressive you actually managed to get multiple difficulties with meaningful changes to them (instead of say, just shortening the timer).

Graphics were somewhat minimal but consistent in style and fit the humorous mood of the game.

If I had one suggestion to make, it would be to add an "invert" option for WASD since my brain apparently wanted to rotate things the opposite direction a lot. But overall, a pretty solid entry.

Wow! Great game! I got really sucked in! I beat it on hard. The music is so fun. The art was incredible. You even had a really awesome background. There was just so much polish. Amazing.

My only request is if you could have the option to invert some of the WASD controls. I played a bunch and then came back a couple days later and played again. But I still would always rotate the wrong way. I just couldn't get myself to rotate the box the way I wanted.

This game was straight-up bananas. I love the energy going on here, from the crazy premise to the hectic animations and sound effects, the presentation here is top-notch. :ok_hand: I do think the randomly-generated boxes could use a little tweaking to make the player encounter new mechanics earlier on in the experience, but other than that, this was an absolutely rock-solid entry. Awesome job!!

Very high marks! I have no real criticism. The visuals, music, the sound, game design, everything is great! Anyone can play this game, which makes it that much better! I feel like this would be great on mobile with some direction touch buttons surrounding the box, or swipes to rotate.

The only thing I would consider adding, and this is totally an artistic/game-design choice; would be very little helper "cues"; A little sound or glowing effect to let you know when you've opened all of a particular color (maybe the key loses color?). If there *was* a hint, I didn't notice, I caught the obvious bell when all locks are unlocked. Maybe a more obvious visual cue would help too for anyone playing with their sound off at work while they should be working :eyes: lol

It's also easy to get a little disoriented by cube shaped boxes with the same color on all sides. I suppose that may be by design, but should maybe be held off for later boxes?

The chests; while being more scary looking, and being home to more high level locks, were actually kind of easy to navigate because they have a very distinct shape and you know where you are on the box. Although, yall may have thought that through and used the harder locks on the chests because of that very reason???....**mind blown**

Sorry if I just unloaded all kinds of silly ideas, but your game is **THAT** inspiring!!!

Good job everyone!

PS. I've never seen a game like this! 5/5 for innovation!

Fantastic game! Best one I've seen so far! I really liked the graphics, the mood, the gameplay, everything really. It's great that you managed to do this all in one game jam (good teamwork played a part I would think). I found the game fun and well balanced and really liked the key in the hole mechanic (especially with the time restraint) and how well you fleshed this out to add depth to the later game. One thing I would add is an option to invert the rotation direction as I sometimes became a bit lost while navigating the box. 5 stars!

04. May 2021 · 07:02 UTC
Nice! This is a good concept, executed well. Like another poster mentioned, I too found myself wishing for an invert-rotation button, but to be honest, I actually think having a hold-right-click-and-drag rotation scheme would actually be even better, as that is a bit more intuitive and keeps the game mouse-only. Feels a bit cleaner all around, so maybe you can experiment with that. I know y'all designed the game with discrete rotation states but it feels like it might be more interesting if you let the player rotate the box freely in this way, as tracking the rotation would be more of a skill.

Ran into the same bug that MrPiedPiper reported at one point, but other than that it felt pretty smooth!

Great work :)

Very clever take on the theme. The visuals were polished and captivating, especially when the boxes pop out of the previous box. The gameplay is simple, but intense, and I'm impressed by all the variations on the basic "lock and key" mechanic you manage to squeeze into it. I beat easy through hard, although it took me a while to figure out that the final difficulty was infinite (I assume). I wound up losing that only when I ran into a bug where clicking during the box opening transition causes the transition to freeze. This also made the fuse stop, so I had to quit out of the game at that point. Bug aside, I had a great time with this entry. Amazing work!

Amazing job ! Gameplay is fun, the goal make the game very intense. Graphics are beautiful, the UI is clean and well integrated. Animations are smooth and nice to look at. The background music perfectly fit with the game.

I would like a more juicy win animation, also the "easy" level is little bit to hard. Maybe increase the timer to let the player discover mechanics.

@ausstein Wait. Did You actually manage to finish all the difficulties, including "arghhh" in a single go? :D
Lots of people got stuck on easy for a while :S. Thank You for playing and the feedback. Endless mode + score system would be a nice thing to have :). I think we didn't add the full-screen option to webgl because it's prone to cause some bugs/issue - some programmer should correct me if that wasn't the actaul reason (the download version should work fine tho) :)

15. May 2021 · 09:52 UTC
@chrissx2 yeah I found arghhh difficulty not as hard as medium or hard difficulty, since at that point I started memorizing the patterns. It was just longer. I think my medium and hard runs were much closer than the arghhh one 🤣

I think the only bomb that exploded was the one while I was introducing the game 😂

I usually use the "click to launch in fulscreen" option on itch. That one causes the least issues in my experience.
