Depth of Moments by LDJam user 413537

[raw]
made by LDJam user 413537 for Ludum Dare 57 (JAM)

Depth can mean many things. Some might think of oceans. Others — of dungeons, the mind, or something more mystical. We weren’t sure at first either — until we stumbled upon our version of it: the depth of a moment.

5.png

This is a story about memories. Small, warm, awkward, important. Sometimes almost forgotten, but somehow still precious. The kind that stay with us and quietly keep us warm on especially cold nights. We wanted to make a game about simple things — sitting by the fire, burning marshmallows, a guitar that’s still not quite in tune. Because it’s these little, imperfect, sometimes silly moments that bring out the truest emotions — and become the mosaic of our lives.

9.png

Sure, we only had three days, and we didn’t manage to build everything we imagined. But we focused on what mattered most: the atmosphere. The kind you don’t explain with words. The kind that lives in the tiniest details. We hope you can feel it too.

7.png

We created and animated a lot more than what made it into the 3-day jam build — including music, sounds, and a full UI that just didn’t fit in time. Still, we’re excited to keep working on the game, add everything we made, and even expand it further. The idea is pretty ambitious, and we’re proud of how much we pulled off with such attention to detail. If you see potential in it, your support means the world. Thanks so much for all the kind words!

Art is spectacular. Was hoping to hear some guitar, but still impressive work in just 48 hours !!

The game looks atmospheric, I like animations. It's not entirely clear how it relates to the theme of depth, and the gameplay itself, too.

The visuals are really pleasing! Cool animations.
But I can't get the compass from my backpack and don't understand what to do next (

The artstyle is absolutely gorgeous. I feel like the bgm is a bit too loud for this setting, but maybe that's just me. Also, what happened to the guy who was fed mushrooms? LOL

Beautiful art, but could not quite figure out what to do. I found the mushroom, ring and guitar, and managed to do something with those, but got stuck on the backpack. The compass just bounced, but did not do anything and I could not get back to the main screen from there.

I thought I was in a comic. It's really nice, you are a very talented artist.
The instructions of that to do weren't really clear and I got a black screen at the end, but it was a good exeperience.

@nsadie Happened to me as well, but I figured it out by sheer luck. Apparently, you have to empty the bag by dragging its contents out of it. Also, I was able to move the compass and other stuff only after moving the cursor a bit to the left of the picture, dunno why though.

Great 2D art!

Apart from that the only things I managed to do were: Spoiler warning!
- giving the guitar to the guy on the right
- giving a mushroom to the guy on the left
- getting a ring from the car
- Bug, possibly game breaking: getting stuck when clicking the backpack and never getting out of the screen (tested in Vivaldi and Edge)

Hey folks! If the backpack’s stuck, try giving the bags a quick tug upward and take the items out one by one

OK, I tried again and could figure out the backpack. After I used the ring, the screen went black. Is that the end?

beautiful game, I had to check the comments to find out how to handle the backpack scene too !

I'm getting stuck after I gave the ring to the girl, a fade to black where I hear the music but see nothing

Played through the game. The art is really good! I like the small details, for example if the campfire burns you can see the light reflection on the characters. The character designs are nice. I really like the dog. :) The animations also add a lot to the atmosphere.

Adding small sound effects for opening the car drawer or taking the mushroom would enhance the atmosphere and gameplay even more.

Like other people said, the backpack was problematic. I had to try it a few times. The other interactive stuff worked well. Congrats for finishing the game! :)

The visual is really great, the colors give a really nice ambiance.
But like others said, interact with items in the bag is a bit complicated, and after i used the mushroom, the guitar, the matches and the ring, i had a black screen, i don't really know if it was the end of the game ?
I still enjoyed the experience and i hope the dude with the mushroom is ok

Okay, this game is seriously the first time I caught myself thinking something is just too good for a jam. This art style, the animations, the feels, why aren't you guys taking my money yet with the next great game or animation is my greatest mystery. Even the small details just feel absolutely gorgeous, this is 100% chef's kiss, no doubt.

I had the same backpack bug as described earlier, and when I played again I did pretty much the same actions and yet didn't suffer the same fate and played through the end. A small detail in an otherwise epic artistic journey. They need to update Ludum for 6 stars for graphics for entries like this.

Easiest 5/5 graphics I've ever given. This was an interesting take on the theme, I can totally see this as a full game with properly cooked mechanics and a full branching story. The gameplay is simple bug engaging, I think taking objects away from the backpack is bugged, I had to click near the left corner of the screen for it to register.

Overall this was enjoyable.

Really like your interpretation of the theme! The game was very atmospheric and beautiful to play. The art is amazing. I think with time to fix the bugs (backpack) and add a little more content (more sounds, and ending scene, etc), this has a lot of potential!. Great work!

Absolutely gorgeous art! Loved the dog. Unfortunately there didn't seem to be any interaction with him/her. I managed to give the ring to the girl and that seems to be the end(?).

Like many others, I got stuck on the backpack until I went here. Were the controls intended for mobile maybe? I have a feeling the dragging of the items out would have been a lot more intuitive with a touch screen. Really interesting entry, very unique. There wasn't a lot to "do", but I enjoyed what was there. I got a good laugh out of the mushroom interaction.

The game looks just stellar :open_mouth: Gorgeous! But as many have pointed out the backpack is super janky, and the game seems to lock in a black screen after giving the girl the ring. I though that the matches where really tricky to light and that I would have liked the chewing of shrooms to be maybe three or four chews instead of how many they are now.

That said it have clearly gone a lot of effort and love into the game, so it's really unfortunate. The visuals really are on another level

You've done an excellent job, and the result is really good! The Art Direction is simply gorgeous – it's absolutely amazing! Everything moves, everything can be touched, everything looks alive. The characters feel real and full of life.

Like some people before me, I also got stuck in the backpack. But later (after some restarts) I realized that you need to swipe items from the backpack – this is absolutely not obvious and could have been better explained in the game.

In the end, I managed to win the girl's heart. When I lit the last match, I was completely thrilled! Great work, fantastic result!

Yeah this is gonna get a prize for graphics. But while the graphics are awesome, like waaay beyond what I'd expect even from a fully polished game, the controls required quite a bit of patience. I assume this would work better with touch events (but couldn't test it), but with mouse, moving especially the compass out of the backpack was very difficult. Same for lighting the matches.

The focus on graphics and atmosphere is visible, but I'd prefer to see more of the gameplay. Not sure if the ending should be just a black screen - I gave the ring to the girl and heard music, so I assume yes? I'm not personally sold on the theme interpretation, but at least it's different than the usual bunch, so I appreciate the explanation. Anyways, great entry, good job!

It's astonishing, really beautiful work. The backpack section was complicated but I managed to pass through after a while, it felt like the objects were not being dragged the way I was doing it, i don't know if it makes sense. After delivering the ring my screen went black and I was stuck in there. Lighting the matches was beautiful, really smooth, all of the animations are next level, but the matches thing blew me away haha. As other people mentioned, I also could not make the connection to the theme by playing it. This game looks and feels really professional. Great work everyone.

I came here ready to say what a pity the back button didn’t work — but then I read the solution, and I’m so glad I did because I really wanted to finish your game. Such a beautifully made story. I loved the point-and-click style, especially the moment with lighting the matches, I was so careful and even thought I might have done it wrong, which added to the tension. Great job! The picture menu for the story parts is also really well done. After the ring scene, I got a black screen (tried 2x times), but hey, treat it like a demo and you are golden. The fire effects and lighting are super impressive!

Amazing art. What else is there to be said about it? It's absolutely beautiful. It's too bad about the bugged interactions. I couldn't find a way to get past the backpack. But regardless, the art is just stellar. Great work.
