Coo-Coo, Chef! by poboy

[raw]
made by poboy for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

logo.png

Some food critics are coming to town! You and your team of sous-chefs have only one shot to impress them, but unfortunately they are birds and can't understand you! Use flags to signal commands to them and make the dishes requested by your hungry customers.

Update: We added a post-jam version, but please base your rating on the original version!

controls.png

Raise both flags to issue a command. For example:

S + K => "Serve" the dish to the customer (Don't serve until the plate is done!).

If you press Space while holding, it'll send the command immediately rather than waiting for the timer.

Discover the rest of the commands yourself! Press and hold H to see previously-learned commands.

  • WASD: Left flag
  • IJKL: Right flag
  • Space: Issue command
  • H: See learned keys
  • R: Restart level

faq.png

Q: How do I individually address my chefs? When I say "move", they all move!

A: You can't, they are birds.

Note: In the postjam version, we changed this so that birds no longer move randomly; they always move one square in the direction they are facing, and then spin to a random direction.

Q: How do I serve my finished dish?

A: Put the dish on the plate and put it on a table somewhere, then issue the "Serve" command! The fish will come over and eat the dish. (This doesn't actually happen because we ran out of animation budget but use your imagination)

Q: How do I skip a level!

A: Issue the "Serve" command and serve your sad customer an empty plate. He will complain, but you've got things to do. Time is money after all!

Q: What does 'Be confused!' mean?

A: Your flag command is not in the avian lexicon. They'll pick an action randomly!

Art is fantastic. Concept is good, overall really cool and fun game.
The amount of combinations for commands is overwhelming, wasn't able to finish instructions before accidentally serving.
On the first level my birds got so confused it was no longer salvageable.

@mostlikely the kitchen gets thoroughly borked so often that we added a reset button on R--pressing it should restore things to the level's start!

Very cute characters, interpreting it as semaphores is pretty cool. I don't really completely get what's happening but I like seeing the guys run around

Very cute! The control scheme is really creative, and the humor is on point. My only issue is that the control scheme is also really random, meaning I had to spam things a lot to get even remotely close to what I wanted to do. I think I would have had more fun if I had crazy combinations that let me control one bird directly up-down-left-right, and then later in the game my memory was challenged by a time limit.

As is, the tone, style, creativity and humor all MORE than make up for a slightly lacking gameplay experience. Overall, very strong!

Interesting game. Cute characters, catchy music, intriguing concept. Including the hint book is very useful, due to the number of combinations possible. Seemed to be easy to get the birds into a unwinnable combo.

Fun little game -- good work!

We are adding a graveyard to our main post, if you kill a bird please send him to us and we will make a vessel for his soul to enter bird heaven

using semaphores is a really cute interpretation of the theme!! yall did an incredible job and i like the birdies lol. the only thing i would really add is that maybe the game needs to be a little bit more deterministic, i think having 'move' making the birdies go in random directions messes with your plans too much - i feel like itd be easier to wrap my head around if they just went forward, or if turn always turned you in the same direction, etc. still great work!!!!!!!

@awr and I played together and our feedback is mainly the same - I feel like you actually have the workings of a really funny, chaotic puzzle game if the randomness just gets toned down a tad! I started making plans for which birds I was gonna send where to do what, but that kinda fell apart once I realized that I couldnt actually send any of them to specific places or in specific directions

Still this is a really cool idea that I think is executed really well and with a lot of polish, so great job overall! also I accidentally sliced a bird in half but didnt screenshot so I guess his soul is destroyed forever sorry

I really liked the visual style and audio.
The bird with a knife looks dangerous :D

One downside is the strong randomness—the bird’s movement direction feels unpredictable, which weakens the control a bit. But I really enjoyed the interpretation of the theme

This is so cute! I love the concept of an octopus desperately trying to keep his team of birds in check and direct them towards a goal. The art is great, the music is fun, and it's definitely funny too hahaha

I'll mirror what everyone else said about the randomness, though. Even just "move in the direction you're facing" and "turn rotate clockwise" would've been enough for me to work with. But spamming "move" 10 times to get a bird to go where I want it to go, followed by "turn" 5 times, was definitely frustrating.

Looks like I'll also be the first to the graveyard. Although... I don't know if it was an accident...

![cold_blood.png](///raw/f3/z/71d2a.png)

And one more thing for the FAQ - I wasn't clear about how serving worked. Do I need to pick up the meal? Bring it to the octopus? Just have it made somewhere? Could have definitely used some clarification on that.

But overall amazing work! With a few small tweaks I think this would be a ton of fun and I'd love to come back to an updated version :)

@awr : thanks for playing! Yeah determinism vs chaos was a big discussion when we were developing. We wanted to preserve the feeling of corraling a bunch of toddlers while still having some control over the game, I don't think we quite got there but still had fun with it

@drainkid : do not worry, we have soul-capturing technology and have cremated his soul to put in a jar in the dirt, I've added him to the graveyard

@Chaseplays : oh dear, a bird has fallen :( we've buried him in the graveyard and a funeral will be prepared with his loved ones. Thank you for playing! "Serve" just sends out whatever food is on the plate, so it just needs to exist on a table somewhere, I'll add it to the FAQ!

Love the feedback, appreciate all your thoughts!!

I love the concept. Chaos is fun, but I think there might bee a bit too much. As said by others, I'd enjoy the game more if the instructions where a bit more clear, even tho I love the idea of you having to figure out out to communicate with the birds. With a bit of work, it could become really cool! :)

On a sidenote, the game is a bit laggy on my computer =(

Really fun concept for this theme, the graphics (both 2d and 3d) are great.
But actually getting the birds to do what you was nigh impossible.
I would try and turn them 180 degrees and they would just turn left 90 degrees and then back 90 degrees.
The move signal seemed to just randomize them and I could not for the life of me make smashed cucumber salad.

I think it should be more deterministic what happens. (i.e. the birds move one tile over, they always turn clockwise etc.)

It's really well made and compelling, with funny writing, but it's just too hard for me.

I like the concept of having all the birds do the same thing at once, but I wish it was more consistent. As far as I can tell, the move command moves the birds to random spaces? Kinda frustrating when you're trying to get to a specific location to interact with something. The art is very cute.

One of the most fun and creative concepts for sure! Absolutely amazing idea, cute, really well done characters and great promise, but at the moment (at least if I understood it correctly) waaay too random, making it very frustrating... If the team decides to take the idea further and polish the design to make it a bit more friendly, I absolutely see this being a indie hit game!

Congrats for the team, really well made!

Nice entry! I love the attention to detail on the ludum dare page. The art and vibe in the game is nice too. I wasn't done learning the flags before the game told me "thank you for playing" so i guess i won? Not sure. Maybe i should start with a list of commands instead of having to do 16 different variations D:

Damn, its can be real awesome, but its too chaotic for its own good hahah!
A bit more predictability amid chaos would work wonders. Like move - only move forward and not everywhere! Also sometimes it would say "grab", for example, but command of the flag is 'be confused'? I am too confused! Is it like one of wariants of confusion then?

But there is so much going for it. I want to try it all, but randomized commands with so much chaos is real hard! (also second dish was announced not in english for me)

Lovely theme and feeling. But the gameplay is extremely frustrating. The flag system is mostly bad keybindings that you initially don't know about and have to remember (or hold h all the time like a maniac :D). Then there is the randomness which is well... random. Having to tell them to "move" more than 10 times because they don't move to the right spot can be annoying.

Overall I think this could have been two seperate games. One giving commands with inputs where you don't know what they do (and flash that out further) and another one with better controls but where the NPCs have some randomness.

I love how you basically made a single player version of overcooked. The flag mechanic to have to learn how to communicate with the birds adds an extra layer and is a very interesting take on the theme and as a mechanic i've never seen that in a game before. Very innovative and unique game and the art is great. Honestly I loved this game a lot. I'd love a multiplayer version of this. Perhaps each player controls one of the two flags. I wish the movement wasn't random though. It can be a bit finnicky to get the bird in the right place. But otherwise this is a great entry. Very memorable and my favourite entry so far in just how unique and innovative it is.

Pretty interesting take on overcooked type gameplay, pretty funky art, nice music and unusual, but pretty enticing gameplay, was fun to complete and figure out! Only complaint is to show the "moves book" on the controls menu as well![Screenshot_12.png](///raw/264/a4/z/72640.png)

Fun idea, I love the sounds and the general atmosphere of the game. A bit difficult to control, but I guess this is the point? I would have liked for the moves of the bird to be predictable.

Bird with knife refuses to look at the cucumber and it keep facing the other birds after 15 turn commands, I think this bird have other plans....

you said be confused and i sure was, but did i enjoy the experience? also yes

i thought i was getting there but it felt like the commands i discovered with the "be confused" tags would change on me then i mildly quit (not rage quit its too cute to rage)

cool input mechanics and discovering the mirrored commands was cool, but then i got confused again.

Cute graphics, but a bit overwhelming with all the different combinations. Maybe the tutorial could start out a bit simpler, like with only controlling a single bird at first. Still a nice, charming entry!

Thanks for the comments everyone, we from the team have been really enjoying reading these :D

We made a [post-jam version](https://poboy2.itch.io/coo-coo-chef-postjam-version) with some more deterministic movement, an intro cinematic, and a confirmation menu before serving. Please continue to use the jam version for rating purposes!

@Neox, @roitchie : thanks for the ideas, we've made a postjam version (link in post) where Move is "forward-only", I agree it is way better. We'll experiment with other control schemes in the future!

@shadow64: Oh dear, another workplace accident... do not worry, we have added a grave for your bird in the OP and his soul will be at peace :)

This is pure chaos. I really love the fact that accidental actions (like hammering a fellow cook) has an actual effect and animation, this is very funny.

This game was really fun! The controls took me a bit to figure out, but once I did I think they worked well enough for a game like this. I think it would be nice if there was a bit more order to the rotations and movement since there were a few times where I was just repeating the same action many times waiting for any bird to go to a specific place (I see this has already been changed in the post jam version). Overall I had a great time! Also, bird with knife is (funny) stressful.
