made by LDJam user 428646 for Ludum Dare 59 (COMPO)

Match signals using various dials to hear the voice of someone you love.

Click and hold the dials to change properties of the signal.

ilyt13.png

ilyt14.png

Tips

  • Overlap the signals as best as you can, and then wait for them to match.
  • Amplitude is the height of the pulse.
  • Frequency is the width of the pulse.
  • X-Shift and Y-Shift move the signal in their respective directions.
  • Speed is how fast the signal moves.

It's recommended to play in Fullscreen.

As an enjoyer of audio engineering this was a really awesome concept. My only piece of constructive criticism would probably just be that it feels like its lacking a bit of content - the person speaking to you after syncing the wave was really cool, I would definitely have liked to explore a bit more of that!

This was super cool! I love the idea of telling a story via a single device (I'm actually prototyping something similar outside Ludum Dare), and it creates a nice possibility for immersion. The gameplay wasn't too challenging, but had enough variables to keep it interesting. Nice work all around!

@manabreak I'm glad it wasn't too easy or too difficult. It's really hard to get the right difficulty for a jam game, so I tried to veer on the easier side so as to not scare anyone away. Good luck with your game, it sounds pretty cool!

This was more engaging than I expected at first! Playing around with knobs and seeing the wave react immediately and jump around is super satisfying, reminds me high school electrical measurement classes... which weren't my favorite, really, but maybe they gave me enough training for this game! Feels like the real thing.
Artstyle, while simple, gets the job done, sound design is well done, it communicates that you're close well, and I'm certainly glad that there's some extra space for slight wave differences, because without that, this could get really difficult. I would say that you nailed it, because it feels just challenging enough.
I like that you tried to go with a simple story here, which gives it some extra juice. I liked the dialog letter effects, I definitely have to have a look at how it's done, because me want. :eyes:

@dzejpi Feel free to check out the source code, even though it's a complete mess. As soon as I found out how to do the text effects, I used them everywhere I could, I just love them so much. I maybe should've toned it down a bit, but I couldn't help myself. I didn't even really have to program them because Godot comes with something called BBCode that does it all for you. I'm not sure what game engine you use, but you can look at this if you're interested (ctrl-f wavy to go straight to it):
https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/ui/bbcode_in_richtextlabel.html

If you don't use Godot, then I don't think that'll help you much unfortunately :(

I also used the Dialogue Manager addon which pretty much handles all the text scrolling and transitions and whatnot.
DzejPi
Apr 20th · 15:45 UTC
@tolviere code being a mess is part of LD. :) I use Godot too, so, it's fine! And I personally really liked them, I don't think they were overdone at all!

@mischa-98 I did go kinda off the rails at the end with the story haha, and I agree with you that the dials get very tedious. The audio is awesome and I like the concept. I actually think you could do like a timed, fast paced version of this and it'd be really cool. Especially on mobile?
My big problem is knobs are super awkward on the computer with a mouse. If it was sliders, and potentially ratcheting inputs instead of continuous, that really would've brough it up to the next level in terms of playability.

Apr 20th · 21:30 UTC
Okay, so many cool things, as unexplained as the story is, it's still enough to give an idea of what's going on. The mechanic is genius (assuming you know just enough about audio design, but even if you don't experimenting still lets the user figure it out). Honestly, the only game I'm giving a 5/5 in every category, absolutely amazing with so much potential.

This game was the epitome of what a game jam is supposed to be for! Amazing job coming up with a simple, yet extremely effective concept that keeps the player engaged the whole time. I wanted to know more about the story, and felt like I was making progress towards it by playing the game. Only piece of feedback is that it took a while for me to understand what the story was about, so it might have a bit of friction for a new player who is just stumbling onto the game. Amazing job!

@avhatar Thank you so much for recording this! Great feedback as well! I can see now that I've made the margin of error for some of the waves wayyyyy too high. I couldn't really figure out a way to increase the difficulty without just decreasing the margin of error, but when I was playtesting it, a lower margin of error was just more frustrating and tedious. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks for checking it out even though puzzle games aren't your thing!

Brilliant way to cross theme with story, and it wasn't too hard nor too easy. And imho the story does not need more expanding as someone suggested, it told just enough for a LD game, and not getting into specific details helps the really important elements to surface.

It’s a somewhat cute game. I really like how it looks visually. I also like the idea of having the audio slider right next to the label in the menu - that’s a nice touch. Good thresholds for confirming waves. I think there’s a lot of room to expand, maybe by adding more mini-games and developing a full story. The image at the end is adorable :)

That was a great small game!

The gameplay was on theme and it was pretty fun to try and figure out how to match the signals up.

I appreciate how generous you were with the signals not needing to be entirely in sync. I'm curious to know how the "closeness" of the two waves was determined, it seems really complicated!

It's shocking how much fun I had simply turning dials. So much so, that I'm giving you the **It's Shocking How Much Fun I Had Turning Dials** award!

@100th-coin This was so much fun to watch! I love your voice acting haha. The closeness of the two waves isn't too complicated to calculate because each wave is a bunch of points all connected by lines, so I just added up the difference in height for each point. Thanks for recording this, it's really helpful!

The idea of the game itself is quite obvious, but I liked how it is made.

This is fantastic!!! I liked the forgiveness on the matching, but still accurate enough you had to be pretty 'dialed in'. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: It was fun just turning the knobs. Felt very tactile. I liked the 3 ping thing. You knew when you were getting close, but not close enough.

At first I turned the speed dial manually trying to match. Then realized I could actually just match it closer, and not have to track by hand like that. lol.

The text was hard to read playing in browser. I just guessed at which knob did what at first.

This was really satisfying to play!

I love it!! This concept is so easy to grasp quickly without much guidance! I especially love the feedback sound effect when you're about to tune to the correct waveform; I've always felt that being able to hear voices on a radio by tuning to the same frequency is like magic... It's so perfect for this theme! I also love the story! I appreciate the small challenges in this level design; they give me the determination to overcome difficulties and connect successfully, making me very focused.

Nice intuitive interface, cool concept. My main criticism is that once you've figured out what all of the dials do exactly, there isn't really much left to discover and the primary gameplay mechanics suffer for it. That was an interesting game, which I played till the end. :)

I see it similar to @adam-gould. Here is my idea: It would be cool if you start with just two dials and after each "round" you get an additional dial. Would have gave the player a progression in gameplay and also a progression in difficulty.

Apart from that the little story was well written. I wanted to know what will happend next. You put the different story pieces in an exciting order. I like the little details, like the sound differences in the voices. The controls felt good and the green wave is a nice touch, which gives a good visual feedback.
