Death stare by Bentekiller

[raw]
made by Bentekiller for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

LD51PageImage.PNG You're a treasure hunter in a treasure room and you goal is to collect three goblets and make a haste escape while playing the mayan's cat game.

Controls: Left mouse click to move to a tile in range

You need to have the same number on you as the big dice beside the cat whenever it is looking at you.
When you step onto a new tile you get that tiles number. The board shuffles every 10 seconds with fresh new tiles. Some tiles doesn't give have a number and other tiles can't be stepped on(Imagine it is a hole).

If you make it far enough, arrows also start flying through the air, so beware!

There are a limited of 5 levels.

I like your approach to the theme! It's a bit confusing that the potato guy wakes up not every shuffle, and I'd prefer arrow keys navigation. Overall it's a nice little game, keep it up!

Interesting take on the roguelike.

I couldn't figure out the rule initially and took me quite a few games and re-reading of the rules to understand the game. Might be just me :/

I thought didn't thought the arrow would change the game much until it shoot at me while the cat is looking.

Thanks for the game.

Took me a bit to figure out what I was supposed to do, but it was interesting once I got the hang of it.

I'm still not sure what the time-frame was for the cat opening his eyes so I just dashed across the map as quickly as I could and hoped I wouldn't die

Pretty good overall. I didn't really like that the cat and the shuffles were offset, it led to a lot of waiting on a safe tile for the cat to come in my experience.

I liked your concept, and liked the simplicity, although i dont really know what you meant by "equipped" in your description. It's a bit confusing at first but i think it adds to the tension, that the cat's cycle isn't synced up with the 10 seconds. Cool game :)

Nice game. Moving with the keyboard would have been better. Too much clicking.
I didn't realise your current number doesn't get shuffled with the rest at first, so I was panicking when the guardian stares when the re-roll timer is near zero.
I also initially thought the white tiles were the impassable ones, turns out it was the numberless ones that were impassable. This seems backwards.
An audio cue when the guardian is about to awaken would have been helpful.
It was good you only have to restart the current level when you die, I got zapped once because I couldn't leave the starting tile.

Took me a while to truly understand the game, and mouse movement for sure made it a lot more difficult. Very interesting mechanic though, made navigation very tense as I rushed to find the nearest shuffled number in time!

A bit confusing at first but I got it after a couple of tries. The sound, even if very simple, combined with the graphics, creeps me out a lot. So I don't know if it's intentional or accidental, but it reminds me of when I was a kid playing games in the early 90's where some games just scared the s--- out of me. Mood 5/5

I love the audio and the animation on the eyes!

It took me a while to realize the player is the cube (I thought the upgrade collectable was the player). After that it took me some time to realize my goal is to walk to the other end and not to collect more upgrades.

Interesting game. I like its visuals but the sounds were kind of annoying and not well balanced. It was starting to get a bit boring so I'm glad you added another challenge in the form of arrows. Took me just a bit to figure out how to start, but it all made sense after. As others said, movement would be better with arrows/wasd.

Cool concept, adding some more obstacles or other items to enhance the strategy would help, but overall it's a nice start to the concept.

Interesting idea, but it was really difficult to see when the cat was about to look at you. Some larger visual indicator or audio cue for when it's waking up would go a long way since you're staring at the board for movement and not really looking at the small eyes at the same time.
