Tool Packer by LDJam user 283449

[raw]
made by LDJam user 283449 for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

You work inside a lonely warehouse for a tools company and have to fill every package that arrives at your conveyor belt. ## Are you able to keep up with the growing order size and item diversity? Screenshot.png

Download (Windows): https://wake-games.itch.io/tool-packer

Controls

  • 'W,A,S,D' to move
  • 'Mouse' look around
  • 'Left Mouse Button' pick up item / put item in package
  • 'Right Mouse Button' drop item (if you have an item in your hand)
  • 'E' start game
  • 'Escape' pause game / resume game

Gameplay

You start with 4 random selected items and their boxes. After you pressed 'E' the conveyor belt will move every 10 seconds. Behind the packages are screens that display the requested items. Pick up one of the requested items out of the boxes located around you and put it in the right package. Repeat this till the package contains all requested items. Each time you fulfill an objective you unlock a new item and the difficulty rises (more items per package).

Nice game! I really enjoyed it, was challenging and fun!
Had to restart my progress a few times, for some reason making a mistake in a box would frequently break the game, and stop future boxes from being recognised, basically softlocking the game, this would cause all the boxes to overflow as the conveyor continued.

Everything held together nicely. The graphics were great, the sound was minimal but worked good (even though that was the weakest part). Played until I started to unlock already unlocked stuff :) Really good work!

The softlock bug should now be fixed. Thanks for informing me about it!

I like the idea behind it, it has a simple yet nice looking graphics and sounds and I like the increasing difficulty. I wish it had some calm elevator music to listen to. And I had a problem with slight dizziness after about 10-15 minutes of rotating around.

It's really interesting to me how simple jobs like this can end up being fun! I thought I'd do a few packages then end up quitting, but I ended up doing quite a few, mostly because I wanted to see more tools on the shelves and how big the order whould get. Then it did get to a point where I had to focus up and pick up some speed, with only a few seconds remaining for the delivery. Do correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the difficulty stops increasing after a while? I must admit I did stop around $500 as I didn't notice new tools or larger orders appear, but still, I enjoyed working in that warehouse!

Some chill background music would of course allways be appreciated, but I didn't miss it too much, since the sound effects are nice on their own. Love the graphics, and the cursor feedback when hovering something interactable (I just love those little things!) Nice and smooth controls, and I very much appreciate the mouse sensetivity option! A nice little warehouse sim!

@neollok First of all thank you for the feedback! Yes you are right. After you've unlocked the last item the difficulty stops increasing.

You should update the itch.io version because that's the one I downloaded at first, and ran into the same issue. Thought the game was broken, but downloading the zip from the LD page fixed it.

The game was nice, mindless fun :)

10 seconds is actually a long time for this since the area you have to move around isn't that big. That made for a relaxing experience just putting items into boxes. The graphics and sounds fit well too, and I really liked the environment design and lighting, and wished I could explore a bit more. Maybe adding a shelf in the middle of the room that you need to walk around would make it harder to find stuff, and make it feel a little more hectic.

Overall though, nice entry!

Inovative and good gameplay for me. That graphics is awesome, I like it. Fun factor is not high at this game, but maybe next time you will think more about that and it will be better. I like little that audio, maybe next time. Nicely fit into the theme.

All feels really polished, the graphics are nicely done, the sounds appropriate. For me the gameplay was just not that fun though, it felt just a bit too repetitive. I think maybe breaking it up into levels or something to give a bit of a break and feeling of reward would have helped. Still a solid entry.

I'm getting the softlock issue, but without that in mind I really liked the gameplay loop! The graphics worked well to convey the environment, and the sound effects were cute but unobtrusive, allowing me to get into the zone more easily. I hope the people who ordered nothing but a ruler and a chainsaw are living their best life!

this is a great entry, really simple but very fun and well executed. found myself cherry picking easier orders to pack later in the game and wasnt really punished for it. maybe three strikes and then you loose would have been better. really enjoyed this though well done!

Nice simple game loop - simple mechanics and soothing environment... the low key warehouse ... must be much much simpler than working as a developer

I managed to hit $330 after which my arm started getting sore. Great submission with really good visuals and a really simple yet solid concept. After a while I figured out a mental technique to get myself in the zone at max speed and it started getting very relaxing... hypnotizing, even.

That zen mood would have further been reinforced by a more interesting soundscape with calm music. Still, the game got really challenging after a while, damn those orders with 3 buckets and their long travel times!

Congrats on the submission!

+1 to dollcoded's bug, I managed to mess up the first 3 boxes, then game just got broken for me until a restart. Overall nice atmosphere (I was a bit worried that this might be a horror theme, because of the light setup)
