10HEAD by LDJam user 305869

[raw]
made by LDJam user 305869 for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

10HEAD is an arcade puzzle game. Think Tetris meets Match 3.

10HEADs are small creatures that only live up to 10 seconds then they die and leave their corpse on the board. You can of course give them an early death to score higher points. Stack them up by color to clear them off the board and receive a score.

Controls: WASD/arrows, space, K.

This is pretty much my first game ever and it was a pretty big hurdle to learn this game engine in 48 hours. But it was fun nevertheless!

This is really epic, very satisfying to get big clears. But some colours are hard to tell the difference between. Nice work! :)

Very impressive puzzle game! The art is cute and the music is catchy, and I like the way you designed the menu as well. Well done!

Neat, like the new vehicle for a matcher! I can't tell red apart from pink to save my life, though. Crank up the blue in that pink and splash in some green; a little more pastel will really help it pop to the eye.

What a great little tetris-like! It took me a bit to get used to it, but eventually I got on a roll and got a score of 2950. The pink and red are very difficult to distinguish, and I had a block get stuck inside another block once, but overall the controls felt pretty good and I love the way they jiggle when they push on each other. I found that I didn't really use the grab mechanic, but maybe there's a strategy I missed. I also noticed that you can remove 4 blocks instead of 5 if you put them in a square; not sure if that's intentional or not. Some sound effects would be nice to round it out, but I liked the music and the graphics are cute. Nice work!

Cool idea. My tertris is more regular but you made it almost like an adventure. Graphics/music are good. Could use some effect when you kill yourself. love the facial expressions. The only thing I would change is the colors. it is sometimes hard to differentiate the different reds.

I liked it, good puzzle game ^^ The grab function could push blocks along with pulling them, so that it's easier to manage the board (but it can make the game easier).
I spammed K to end my game after 3000 points or so, and all the blocks suddenly went gray. I do not know if that's a feature, but it may be a bit harder to play :p But it was by spamming K which we should not do if we play it normally, so that's fine

Very fun! So wonderful that people are able to find new, exiting twists on classic, arcade-puzzle joy. Really enjoyed my time with this game - satisfying, cute characters, lovely little tunes, and highly engaging. Really great job!

this is the first game that has ever made me wonder if I'm color blind

I found it really satisfying how the pieces moved - it wasn't just a rigid grid, they could sort of push on each other, which felt nice to play

I also think the game is designed well, having 6 colors on the 5x5 board is a good balance!

@badcop Thanks for the positive feedback! It is actually me that is literally colorblind, but usually where I can tell a small difference in color, people see a large one. But this was one time where it was actually the opposite!

That was really unique, nice job! I think the game needs to have an easier difficulty curve at the start at least, because I was only able to match a single row after playing for a while. Like maybe you only need to match 2 or 3 in a row in the beginning, or there are fewer possible colors, etc.

I think you should keep experimenting with this idea a bit because it's interesting. It kind of reminds me of Wario's Woods for the SNES, where it's a puzzle game with a playable character that's part of the puzzle mechanic. That game was fun as hell.

Also, for your first game this is very impressive!

Tetris is one of my favorite games ever, so naturally I love these types of games. I love the limit of space and the fact that you can pick up the blocks allows for so much more complexity. Super impressive for your first game, cant wait to see what you make next! Well done!

Really cool game! Idk if it was a feature but I got to a point where all of them turned white and then it was pretty unplayable by then. I really like the use of the theme as well. The feedback when moving them around felt really good.

I kinda missed the grab part. Found just putting the clusters in different corners just slightly too easy. Would have been nice with a bit of more eventual ramping difficulty. Maybe random uncolored blocks appearing or some other hurdle to overcome.

Also, what's up with everything turning gray? I'd just started with my custom rule to place everything before 9 to try to force the difficulty up a bit.

Oh, and only take that as constructive criticism, everything else was great! Very cute. Good level of stressful, and very nice small details, like the guys pushing up against each other etc;

It is quite easy if you put the different colors in the corners but once you do one mistake it's hard to recover  Nice concept and execution.

@mrwarranty Thanks! This is actually my first "song" ever created. And I kinda surprised myself with how well it turned out given my lack of skill :P

@bowlercaptain @ben-barsdell Thanks for the feedback! I fixed the colors in a patch shortly after the release. I agree that the rules could be worked on, I thought I would have time to come up with something better... Maybe in the future!

@ben-barsdell @rinkuji @jaykayey @airwaffle Thanks for the feedback! And yes there are quite a few blocks. I don't think I will be able to fix them all at least not for this LD. The combining of 4 10HEADs was lazy coding by me. Being able to squeeze between them was a bit of a limit of the game engine. But the bug of all characters turning white/gray seems to be the game switching to/from OpenGL due to the browser disliking some memory usage by the engine... alas, thanks for pointing it out!

@zimonitrome What did you use for the music? I need something like this for my future jams!

- Graphics are cute, nothing to change. ^.^
- Even tho the music doesn't loop perfectly, it's not bad at all and fits a puzzle game!
- The game seems way too easy, as long as we don't get very bad colors we can go on forever. We don't even need to push most of the time.
- Well, we _could_ go on forever, but there's a memory leak of some kind, the game gets slower and slower over time, until we get the white board shown in a comment above.
- Changing the color of the old pieces is a bad idea in a game where we need to match the same colors. I wasn't sure sometimes if what I was looking at was old red or pink. D:
- The 4-match when it's a square is actually a good idea, even if unintended, because squares are a bit more difficult to fit.

Overall a fun puzzle game that just needs more difficulty and a few minor fixes!

This is absolutely delightful! I loved how the dead squares would 'nudge' when you pushed into them. Really nice controls feedback!

The game is really fun and I like the squishy creatures!
The time limit does not seem to effect much maybe if you had a hold box like in tetris it would effect more, but then it may be to easy...

I think this was a really interesting take on the match 3 concept! I think some of the feedback has already been mentioned by the previous players so I'll skip that. Overall I had fun and I think it's really good for a compo submission! Great job!!

Took me a moment to realize how it work, but after that it was really fun! Simply great idea for the game! Also both graphics and music are super nice too. Amazing job with the game!

Had a lot of fun with this! The music is fitting in a way where it fits right into your mind while playing the game instead of getting repetitive, and I love the little bit squidgyness when you bump into the already placed creatures ahaha

Pretty good! I got a score of about 3000.

I think the movement system could be improved. It's a bit difficult to grab and move the creatures, and I noticed that I would often get stuck on edges. Maybe discrete grid-based movement would be better.
