Molly the Mole by LDJam user 259213

itch.io

This 'game' is more of a tech demo and me playing around with unity. Once again, I made the same mistake I've made countless times — I didn’t plan what the final game would be from the start.

Maybe I’ll learn for next time :)

Very hard to refuse to play a game with a mole (I love moles).
I really like the idea of finding worms by sound, it can give very interesting gameplay, radar-style, where like a hunter you wait for the sound of your next prey. But it's a very good idea to have added visual indicators. I wasn't expecting such an eerie atmosphere :o

great sound design and vibes. the loop of trudging through dirt and then being able to move more quickly along the paths i'd carved made mapping out the space pretty enjoyable. i didn't really pay much attention to the worms or the meters. the atmosphere was perfect and i wanted to explore more areas try to dig up secrets.

Mom: We have food at home

The food at home:

But seriously great game. I love the vibes. It's sad that I could still move when I died but that also allowed my dead corpse to keep gathering food and save molly (and her kids)!

Thank you for your submission!

First off: I saved Molly and her kids! The game has a very fitting mood and atmosphere that really drew me in.

I have a small suggestion regarding the worms — maybe make them a bit pinker so they stand out more. In exchange, you could add more enemies to increase the challenge a bit.

The sound design is also fantastic—really well done!

I really like this idea. I couldn't quite work out if the game had directional sound to tell me where the worms were but it's an incredibly creative idea and I think the idea could be expanded upon into a full game! Well done!

Great atmosphere and game idea! It'd be cool to see it expanded on.

Interesting concept! But the sound for the worms didn't work out for me, even with headphones. I only found them visually. Cool idea though!

Molly and the kids are safe ;) Very interesting concept, and the sounds and graphics made it feel very claustrophobic.
Maybe add more information on what the worms look like ahead of playing the game, or in a tutorial? It took me a while to figure it.
Nice!

Love this game soo much! It has so much potential, and its the first one I played with that dark and pressing mood. But like a lot of games in LD, its demo-ish. Also, I first was confused by that weird swiping thing and then me dying. I first though it was the hand of molly or such.
I defenetly would try making this a bit more clear.
I'd also turn down the brightness and add a vignette.
Also the hand-thingy needs more context.

Gameplay-wise, like I said, a LOT of potential. like, what if molly can build simple structures? You could search up what might be the natural enemies of moles, or such. adding more dangers (and making them rarer btw) would be great!. Some animations would'nt do any harm either. Keeping the scene moving and 'lively' makes it more interesting, which keeps players.

All in all, good job!

Edit:
My procedure would be something like:

Prepare build system;setup basic application;[GJ START];plan out the entire game in 2-4 hours;implement main game-mechanics;implement game-loop;implement levels,etc..; polish game{graphics, difficulty valus}/final playtest

I was happy that I got to save the Kids! It's funny, my team and I also discussed something similar with echo location but decided for something a bit more simple. Really appreciated this game as I love this idea. The SFX gets a little jarring over time but the mole is cute and the static level seems really cool.

First i was a bit confused about if the markers around the mole where danger or food. But it came clear within the first try. Sound design was really good and did contribute a lot to the atmosphere!
Some Audio cues would be good (like when taking damage, or getting a worm).
But overall really good game! :)

There's definitely something to be done with this tech demo! It has potential! I'd love to see the worms more easily. and maybe something to put more pressure on me?

This game was scary! I did not expect the skeletal objects to come flying at me. I really enjoyed building my own sort of hunting trail to re-use, the whole experience felt very intuitive!
Good job!

Great mood, it felt spooky and uneasy at times (in a good way)! Worms were a bit hard to spot at first but very nice overall!

I liked the games atmosphere, and the idea is pretty fun. A bit more visual and perhaps a bit more clear audio clues on what was happening would have been great. But overall a pretty good jam game.

I really like this game! It's cute and creepy, cozy but a bit scary all at once! I thought the game loop was pretty enjoyable, too! I think you should keep fleshing this concept out, I think you're onto something!

A deeply charming entry for the jam! Very simple but very effective. Sound design is extremely well done, and the character is enjoyable.
A couple of hiccups with the controls not being responsive consistently, but very reasonable for a game jam entry! For being such a simple game it has a lot of "vibe" to it - a lot of specific personality, and is executed well. Nice work!

This is a very cute little story! Molly has to survive the attacks of the terrifying skeleton predators and find foods, which is really great. I think it would be better if the attack cues from the predators were more noticeable.

I like the dark vibe of the game! I was not expecting a game a bout a cute little mole could give jumpscares. very Interesting idea, could be quite nice with some more development.

I really liked the mood. Nice that you speed up when an area is cleared. Didn't really complete the "objective", but for some reason I just zoned out and digged around with was great :D good job :)

the dark ambiance is quite good with the sound design. Maybe the danger is not enough here, I walk through the map without worrying touching a bad creature.
Otherwise really good game :)

Very nice game, feels very polished and complete. Usually you can tell where people ran out of time with their jam games (like mine), but this feels like you managed to do everything you set out to do!

Cool demo, idea was interesting and could become something interesting, but for me lack of more obvious visual hints of the predator right before he atacks made it difficult to understand

it was so satisfying to crawl! although i didnt understand at first where is food, i played for a while and enjoyed the sound. the screamers were -- whoah -- dark! i liked it

I came for the cute mole, but I stayed for the eldritch horrors beyond human(mole) understanding. A beautiful story of a single mother putting her life on the line for the well being of her offspring.

Also the digging is fun. I couldn't help but carve out large chunks of the map for the hell of it.

I won! Eerie and I think the blindness of the mole was well executed. Only seeing stuff temporarily due to sound, I think thats what was going on, it worked well. Music was great for the ambience and mood too.

I saved them all! :D When it said 'follow the sounds' I thought it was going to be literal, like a blip or something like that. Might be a nice idea to try? :D

I had a great time playing. Almost at the end, I noticed that there were gray and red circles around the mole indicating danger and food. Maybe making them a bit bigger would help with that. The background audio was cool, especially the rustling noises really sounded like dirt.

I really like the concept of the radars helping guide me away from the enemies. I was very confused at the beginning of the game on what exactly to do, but I eventually figured it out. I think the game has a very interesting atmosphere I haven't seen all too much. Reminds me a bit of older flash games.
