LD54 - Box Survival by burnedkirby

[raw]
made by burnedkirby for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

Try to survive for as long as you can!
W, Space, Up to jump
A, Left to go left
D, Right to go right

EDIT: I added the capability to do "lighter" jumps by releasing the jump key early. This update was done before the 48 hour deadline.

This entry was my first foray into making something with Godot. It definitely is a step up (several steps up) from writing games from scratch (which I used to do with previous ldjam entries, using libraries like Raylib). What I mean to say, is that this game was more of an experiment to test Godot and it has passed my test. I will not be voting other games (but probably will comment on them) since I am somewhat time restricted (currently taking a course) since I don’t think I was serious enough when making this game, so I don’t think it should get a rating. In the future, I definitely will be using Godot though, and hopefully with a game with more content.

EDIT2: Just realized ldjam.com allows to opt out of ratings, so I'll do that.

I enjoyed trying to improve my highscore! Not challenging in a frustrating way, so well done. The music fits the game, but the graphics are the bare minimum to make the game work. And that's okay! I liked playing it.

All in all a fun time for 2-5 minutes. Pretty good for the time spent. Improvements could be made to the jumping. Such as instead of going to full height every time, allowing the jump to stop by releasing early. The box shrinking over time was a nice nod to the theme and was a good surprise as I didn't notice it at first.

Took me a while to notice the box shrinking, but once I realized what was going on it was a clever way to introduce the theme. I agree with Gallone that variable jumping would be really beneficial to this game; more control over the player would make for more intense moments and higher scores. I loved the particle effects and general feedback whenever you get hit, well done on that!

had fun trying to reach 100 and enjoyed the satisfaction of that ![Screenshot 2023-10-01 080048.png](///raw/941/c5/z/5c556.png)

Very soothing music and "bubbles".
I especially enjoyed the patterns with mixed colors.
Maybe in contrast the "unified color" patterns were slightly less appealing.

Ultimately the slow-pacing doesn't encourage to start again since we know that the game will be too easy (?) for 1 minute. The game really shines when the box gets small.

Ah another Godot game!!! I really like how the progression makes you feel the "Limited Space" I really wanted to get the "end" where the brown box would crush my player but the waves got harder as I had less space to move around in. Good job!

I liked it, especially the hurt particles. Very good use of the theme - nice and simple!

The music is such a banger, I did not expect that

Love the simplicity, and it was pretty addicting. Nice job!

Fun game, amazing music and a great take on the theme congrats! With some more polish this would probably one of the best games in the compo: particles, screeshake, sprite flash, UI and a better color palette

I wish you didn't opt out of ratings, that was really cool. I love a bullet hell, so had so much fun with it. The juice on getting hit too, yum! Great work!

Liked the song and the bullet-hell gameplay! I got 121s. The art could have been better.

This was very fun - I like the minimalist style, even if it was just due to lack of time. It's your choice, but I'd turn on ratings if I were you - it's good to get an idea of how your own view of your game compares to what other people think of it, and if you don't rate other games, the system means you won't get shown to as many people as you would otherwise.

Super fun! I really wish you didn't opt out of ratings. Its obviously very simple, but the controls and handling on a basic level are quite good and consistent, and there's much more enjoyment to be had here than it appears. Good juice, good controls, fuckin' fantastic music. Great job!!!

P.s. I got to 136s, i tried really hard to beat that 150s but I couldn't even after like 10m of trying. It was a fun time trying tho!

really nice idea, it took me a while to notice that the game board was shrinking. Really elegant design :)

Fun little game! I like abstract games.

I also didn't notice at first that the area was shrinking.
On my second run I noticed that the orbs were aiming at a spot where I was before, so I could more easily predict what would happen.
I like the color palette of the orbs.

Well done :)
