Floodwater by John Gabriel

[raw]
made by John Gabriel for Ludum Dare 54 (COMPO)

banner.png

A flooding cave is a terrible place to find yourself - especially if you happen to be water-soluble.

In Floodwater, you must ascend through a series of eight floors, solving puzzles to clear a path as you race against an ever-expanding pool of deadly water.

The game can be controlled entirely with the arrow keys. If you get stuck, you can restart a level by pressing X.

Great music and audio! The puzzles were fun, and I liked how every new mechanic had a level where it showcased how to use it before giving us anything hard. Well done!

Really fantastic game!

The level design is very well thought out. I love the "show, don't tell" that you've implemented throughout the levels, and the difficulty strikes a perfect balance of struggle and success.
The music is an absolute bop, and the graphics are wonderfully nostalgic.

Thanks for making this; I had a great deal of fun.

Was worried I'd end up in a situation where I know what to do but just can't do it fast enough but was glad that didn't really happen. Liked gradual introduction of new mechanics.

This game is awesome! At first I was confused because the Z key is looks like a O in the menu, but once I got past that I absolutely loved this game. The puzzles were great and its such a clever use of the them. I also love the vibe and the art! Great job

Wau, really good puzzle game. I really liked that you had tutorial level and next level used mechanic from that tutorial level. Each new mechanic was introduced with tutorial level. The correct way to introduce game mechanics.

264 seconds! Is it good?
Took me a while to start it though, I could not make out what key I had to press.. basically tried my full keyboard and something worked!
Liked how the game taught me the new mechanics organically, good job on that!

Nice game page design! Haha it took me a little while to figure out I can push the box :) So my only nit is to explain that and that the button only works with boxes!

Music and art is fitting!

Congrats on finishing the polished game! I wish there were more levels!

OK. This is not my type of game, but. Sometimes great gamedesign just smacks you in the face. I think you did a great job of introducing new mechanics at a great pace, the puzzels where the right amount of difficult for me. You made me feel smart. The game was just long enought for a gamejam game aswell. Perfect in most every way. I loved this game and have given the link to my friends. Wow. Thank you for making it.

Great level design & I think it's wonderful how you introduce the new mechanics on their own mini-level. Feels very complete despite the low level count, but it's a 48 hour jam so I'm not sure I can expect more

If there was a level design rating category, I'd give you 5 stars there

Great game, one of my favourites so far! Really good art and music, the core idea is strong and well expanded upon with each new level. My only complaint would be that there's not enough levels (or not enough hard levels). I'm really not playing puzzle games usually and I still found it pretty easy. One more involved level before introducing a new concept would make it a perfect jam entry for me!

I really liked the tile transition effects, really cool. I felt while the water mechanic added some interesting locality to the kind of "step constraint" thing, the tightness of the constraint felt kind of limiting. I guess it might just be me liking puzzles that can have a few paths to the goal, but otherwise it was really cool.

![Speed2.png](///raw/5d0/72/z/5f4fe.png)

Anyway, very nice game! It was a pretty unique twist on a sokoban, and you managed to make an impressive amount of mechanics and levels for the time limit. The levels were a bit on the easy side, but the final one still gave me some trouble, so it was fine. I also liked the music and graphics. Some sort of display for when will the water move and when will it not would've helped, but other than that, great entry!

03. Oct 2023 · 22:39 UTC
I did pretty good once I got the hang of it. 233 seconds, 330 steps, died 7 times. That "died 7 times" part was because I didn't realize you could push the box to block the water on the first level. Once I got the hang of that, I was ok. My friend developed a similar game in PICO-8 called Mushroom Mountain, so I was used to the mechanics.

Echoing a lot of other comments. Great fun, neat mechanics and great pacing.

My only comment is that it took me an embarrassingly long time (until the final level) to realize that the game was actually tun based. I was running around like a madman clearing levels because I thought it was time based and I needed to move fast. I think the last level required exact movement, so once I realized I could go at my own pace it changed the game. Maybe make that more apparent somehow? Or maybe it was written somewhere and I'm just a moron?

Fantastic! It feels really innovative to have such a sense of danger and immediacy in a puzzle game like this, the water moves so quick so you have to be very precise! My one critique would be the graphics and the level readability - making the door and the box the same shade makes my brain have to do a little bit extra work to parse what I need to achieve

"I thoroughly enjoyed all the puzzles. However, at the beginning, I was a bit uncertain about which key to press to start. The screen seemed to suggest the letter 'O' or the number zero, but neither seemed to work. After some trial and error, it appeared to be 'Z' or 'X'? I wasn't completely sure. Nonetheless, the game was nicely done!
