Neo City Express by Pedro Medeiros

[raw]
made by Pedro Medeiros for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

Neo City Express is a madcap arcade game about making extremely poor decisions while driving.

You play as Daggers McBlack, the heir to his family's delivery company. Guide him through 6 top-down arcade racing levels, dodging cars and sorting out his personal affairs. In order to take the company to new heights, Daggers will push himself to questionable limits. But he's traveling with the loving memory of his grandma, so perhaps with her guidance everything will turn out alright.

WASD or arrow keys to move, type to write!

Before playing

The game has auto-save, feel free to stop and continue later.

We just released a post Jam design rebalance on Itch.Io. It includes no new content, just a difficulty balance. You can also play the original version here, but it's much more difficult. The itch.io version also has QWERTY, AZERTY, COLEMAK and DVORAK support, choose yours in the options screen.

I never gave an all-5 rating to any game until now. My god, everything is just so good! The art is stunning, the music is catchy as all hell, the gameplay gimmicks are fun and innovative, and the writing, god, the writing!

The game constantly throws all these absurd curveballs at the player, all within the context and narrative of the story. Talking about this game will make anyone sound insane - 'yeah, I crashed on stage 4 because I was double-dating on Tinder while driving sleep-deprived'. I love it, seriously, I love it.

It's sort of like that old Flash game Multitask, except instead of trying to balance a ball you're trying not to crash a janky car, and instead of having to watch out for squares you're flirting with cute girls on Tinder.

10/10

The game was a ton of fun! I actually type with my voice because of RSI so that gave me I think a kind of unique experience with this game. It made some stuff easier and some stuff a lot harder. I really like the mechanics building on each other, the presentation and the music.

It took me a while to understand how to interact with the tinder prompt! Eventually I got it by accident by screaming random voice commands, haha. I also saw a bug where when I paused the game and pressed resume it skipped one of the days.

Really good job!

Honestly amazing and original!!Loved everything and its amazing its only done in 3 days! The only problem I had is that you can totally ignore the "press space to fix swerve" mechanic by just holding right and by spamming space I once skipped dialogue which was a bummer because the dialogue was very fun. Other than that cant say anything except that I had a great time and it was really fun! Love how hectic it was and how you had to press a million things! Ps. Daggers McBlack is the coolest edgy name for this dude.

that's an amazing game! the amount of polish here is incredible for a 72-hour jam. the idea of how to make the driving harder is very original and fun, the writing, art and music are incredible! that's actually a gem, although i found it kind of frustrating that i almost didn't get to choose what kind of message i want to send if either of them started with W, A, S or D

WOW. JUST WOW. I am in awe. :open_mouth:  :fire:

Everything is so ridiculously good. And even when I crashed in a fiery ball of flames I was laughing my ass off.

I'm also crazy inspired and just as angry that you could create something so insanely good in a single weekend.

Ooof. The last day was murderously difficult. Great game though. I guess the only issue is that it can be a little too hard at times to keep track of everthing ( especially the swerving ), but otherwise it's very pog. Great job

Also, on the 6th day I wasn't really able to backspace texts.

I just loved it, congrats!! I think maybe the sfx are not too polish compared to the rest of the game? But the music is awesome!!

Well, I'm a huge fan of your respective works in general, so when I saw the entry on Twitter I tried it immediately.

I expected to play an excellent entry for this jam. Instead, I've played the best game so far of the year.

I'm truly amazed and overexcited. This is a masterclass. Congratulations and thank you for this entry.

Well wow! Easily my favourite game of the jam.

Too bad one my arrow keys sometimes doesn't work, I couldn't finish the game. And I can't use WASD since I also need to type (and I can't type in QWERTY). I wish you used the physical position of keys for movement.

But as I said, I'm impressed by the work. Everything is so good. I'm sad I can't see the rest of the story.
Really good job

I've been dying to play something like this for so much time after playing Textorcist, this is awesome! Everything feels fluid, responsive and balanced overall. The humour in this is just perfect hahahaha, I had a lot of good laughs and a great challenge. The art is beautiful and everything well polished. Great work!!

This is really amazing on all different levels, from art and music to quality of texts. The thing that comes in mind is only "how was this made in 3 days and how can I become as equally cool?"

Gameplay idea is definetely fresh. Can't say I've seen anything similar apart from Textorcist, but here it's much more engaging in actual texts you write, that's a plus for me.
One problem I had was the tinder part: for texting I was told I should type with keyboard, but for Tinder I was told nothing, and common sense told me to swipe the cards. Yes, after I started thinking what can I do I eventually understood that I needed to press 1/2 keys, but man, in the flow I had only one brain cell not thinking about avoiding cars, I just searched for text tutorial of how to swipe and completely wrecked the car

Anyways. You guys rock, keep up the good work!

This is a special kind of crazy and it's awesome! Top art as expected, the audio, story and v/o are all very good, game works really smoothly with no jank. The idea is really cool, it's like a warioware masquerading as a driving game. If I had to nitpick it would be that the base driving game seems to be a bit neglected, I would have appreciated slightly more cars and variety, but the game is great regardless.

We made a similar game in LD51 (driving while texting) so it's fun to see how different teams come up with their own spin on the same idea!

Oh my goodness, this was absolutely hysterica, and it was a lot of fun (and tense af!). I'm soooooooo glad I'm a quick typer cuz otherwise I never would've stood a chance, and the fact that I've actually texted and driven far too many times probably helped too 🤣 But shhhhhhhhhh 100% would not recommend. Seriously though, this was incredible! I had to play without audio so I'm sad I missed out on the voice acting, but seriously this was a huge surprise of a game and had terrific dialogue, gameplay, and art, and it was done for Ludum Dare?!?! Howwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww?!?!?!

PS: I love the baby delivery comment lol, way to get that into the game in addition to being a game about making deliveries 🤣

Incredible! The polish and production value for this game is off the charts! I also love me a typing game (there are so few!). The Cyberpunk aesthetic is really cool! The music is awesome, as is the concept and gameplay! Sadly I think I joined Gram-Gram, suffice to say I'm not very good at texting and driving! I really like the vehicle damage GUI too. Yet another 5 star across the board game! <3

**EDIT: **i've dowloaded the last version of the mac version on itch, and dragging the executable file into the terminal worked just fine!

…and i'm so happy because it was a crazy experience! first of all the first thing you see is the game is more than polished, everything feels well designed, art is incredible and music is great too!

about gameplay, i simply loved it! the difficulty curve was good, and every new mechanic was introduced with subtlety and humour (but i'll get to that later). the gameplay totally serves the point of the story and it's quite rare to note that in a jam game. i also liked the fact that you have room for error, like for example you can press the wrong keys while texting and it will only slow you because you'll have to press the right keys after, but you don't have something like a penalty for bad typing (although it could have been fun to send messages like "wwwwhelsllowdsdddontasssaazworrwy"). maybe there is an ending with 0% typing error, but i won't be the test player for this one haha

speaking of endings, i got the good ending and "the" (?) ending. first of all, it's great to have several endings, i may test it even more and roleplay to test if there are other endings (you never know with davey wreden). i really liked the falsely naive happy-end style, it was really funny, and that brings me to my last point:

humour is incredible in this game! dialogs are perfectly written, situations are really funny, and i got myself bursting of laughter many times (when you open tinder for the first time was so unexpected, the whole dialog with car is a masterclass, the never ending list of drugs, i mean i can continue but here was my top 3 funny moments).

honestly i don't see anything in this game which is not great, i'm so happy i finally could play it, you totally deserved your incredible ratings, and i'm sorry i haven't rated you before so your medium rating would have been a little bit closer to 5 everywhere!

**congratulations to the whole team!!**

**EDIT:** I'm super happy the game worked out!! thanks for the lovely review, I'm glad you enjoyed it <3

hi @amarokczukay, i'm sorry to hear that! :( have you downloaded the itch.io version of the game? we just updated the builds with a fix for an issue that happened in linux (very similar to what you described). can try if that fix works for your case? we've only tested with a 13.3 mac

if that also doesn't work, you can try running the game from the terminal with ./path/to/app.app/Contents/MacOS/NeoCityExpress, that should generate a crash.log 🙏

Great and difficult game, played it through using combination of gamepad and keyboard (and mouse where it was needed). I liked the message that the game was rubbing on the face of the player: Texting while driving is lethal and irl you'll more likely die trying than get good at it. On other aspects the game looked and sounded good, felt very polished and complete experience overall.

Congratulations!
