Neo City Express by Pedro Medeiros
Neo City Express is a madcap arcade game about making extremely poor decisions while driving.
You play as Daggers McBlack, the heir to his family's delivery company. Guide him through 6 top-down arcade racing levels, dodging cars and sorting out his personal affairs. In order to take the company to new heights, Daggers will push himself to questionable limits. But he's traveling with the loving memory of his grandma, so perhaps with her guidance everything will turn out alright.

Before playing
The game has auto-save, feel free to stop and continue later.
We just released a post Jam design rebalance on Itch.Io. It includes no new content, just a difficulty balance. You can also play the original version here, but it's much more difficult. The itch.io version also has QWERTY, AZERTY, COLEMAK and DVORAK support, choose yours in the options screen.

The game constantly throws all these absurd curveballs at the player, all within the context and narrative of the story. Talking about this game will make anyone sound insane - 'yeah, I crashed on stage 4 because I was double-dating on Tinder while driving sleep-deprived'. I love it, seriously, I love it.
10/10
It took me a while to understand how to interact with the tinder prompt! Eventually I got it by accident by screaming random voice commands, haha. I also saw a bug where when I paused the game and pressed resume it skipped one of the days.
Really good job!
Audio is great, gameplay is amazing, graphics even more
Everything is so ridiculously good. And even when I crashed in a fiery ball of flames I was laughing my ass off.
I'm also crazy inspired and just as angry that you could create something so insanely good in a single weekend.
Also, on the 6th day I wasn't really able to backspace texts.
I expected to play an excellent entry for this jam. Instead, I've played the best game so far of the year.
I'm truly amazed and overexcited. This is a masterclass. Congratulations and thank you for this entry.
Too bad one my arrow keys sometimes doesn't work, I couldn't finish the game. And I can't use WASD since I also need to type (and I can't type in QWERTY). I wish you used the physical position of keys for movement.
But as I said, I'm impressed by the work. Everything is so good. I'm sad I can't see the rest of the story.
Really good job
Gameplay idea is definetely fresh. Can't say I've seen anything similar apart from Textorcist, but here it's much more engaging in actual texts you write, that's a plus for me.
One problem I had was the tinder part: for texting I was told I should type with keyboard, but for Tinder I was told nothing, and common sense told me to swipe the cards. Yes, after I started thinking what can I do I eventually understood that I needed to press 1/2 keys, but man, in the flow I had only one brain cell not thinking about avoiding cars, I just searched for text tutorial of how to swipe and completely wrecked the car
Anyways. You guys rock, keep up the good work!
5/5
Please hook me up to your drug dealer, you must have been on some real Soma 31-37 to get this out in three days!
The car voice being honks had me in stitches. Awesome stuff!
We made a similar game in LD51 (driving while texting) so it's fun to see how different teams come up with their own spin on the same idea!
PS: I love the baby delivery comment lol, way to get that into the game in addition to being a game about making deliveries 🤣
Everything about was this perfect, 10/10 from me. Actually I think it's my favorite jam game. Amazing job guys!!
please come to brazil
…and i'm so happy because it was a crazy experience! first of all the first thing you see is the game is more than polished, everything feels well designed, art is incredible and music is great too!
about gameplay, i simply loved it! the difficulty curve was good, and every new mechanic was introduced with subtlety and humour (but i'll get to that later). the gameplay totally serves the point of the story and it's quite rare to note that in a jam game. i also liked the fact that you have room for error, like for example you can press the wrong keys while texting and it will only slow you because you'll have to press the right keys after, but you don't have something like a penalty for bad typing (although it could have been fun to send messages like "wwwwhelsllowdsdddontasssaazworrwy"). maybe there is an ending with 0% typing error, but i won't be the test player for this one haha
speaking of endings, i got the good ending and "the" (?) ending. first of all, it's great to have several endings, i may test it even more and roleplay to test if there are other endings (you never know with davey wreden). i really liked the falsely naive happy-end style, it was really funny, and that brings me to my last point:
humour is incredible in this game! dialogs are perfectly written, situations are really funny, and i got myself bursting of laughter many times (when you open tinder for the first time was so unexpected, the whole dialog with car is a masterclass, the never ending list of drugs, i mean i can continue but here was my top 3 funny moments).
honestly i don't see anything in this game which is not great, i'm so happy i finally could play it, you totally deserved your incredible ratings, and i'm sorry i haven't rated you before so your medium rating would have been a little bit closer to 5 everywhere!
**congratulations to the whole team!!**
hi @amarokczukay, i'm sorry to hear that! :( have you downloaded the itch.io version of the game? we just updated the builds with a fix for an issue that happened in linux (very similar to what you described). can try if that fix works for your case? we've only tested with a 13.3 mac
if that also doesn't work, you can try running the game from the terminal with ./path/to/app.app/Contents/MacOS/NeoCityExpress, that should generate a crash.log 🙏
Congratulations!
