Hardwork Simulator by LDJam user 261208

[raw]
made by LDJam user 261208 for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

Update:

I just decided bringing this game to Steam, developing it on my free time. If you wanna help me decide the direction to go with this project, please wishlist the game to stay tunned: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1781880/Hardwork_Simulator/

HardworkLogo.png

It was a normal day at work. But your text editor started to get pretty Unstable.

movie_022.gif

Hardwork Simulator is the perfect game for you to play at work, on the university computer, or any other time you just want to have fun playing a game while everyone around you thinks you are working as hard as hell.

Sounds fun, right? But not everything will be fun. Angry stickmen try to unmask you while you smash your keyboard trying to reach the end of the document. Prevent that the mouse pointers thrown by the stickmen hit your text. And try not to make the text editor too unstable or you'll face the Blue Screen of Death!

Change Log:

  • I created a Steam Wishlist button inside the game

Change Log:

Now that Play and Rate is over, I'm updating the WebGL version with the main feedbacks I received during LudumDare. Here are the updates made to the current WebGL version: - Boss fight! Against a bigger and stronger sitckman - View at the bottom of the document, relevant information about the player's progress - Now the sitckmen are killed (not just knocked out temporarily). It was pretty pointless to attack the stickmen in the original version - Added a command for the player to choose to increase or decrease typing speed. The feedback was very recurrent that when restarting the game, the start could be very slow. - Now you can hold SPACE and BACKSPACE!

If you want to play the original version developed during LudumDare COMPO, download the PC zip version.

Really fun idea, would be interesting if mixed with a spelling game somehow, mashing the keyboard got tiring after a while. Great job though!

Oh boy, that was fun! I swear I've seen you post it with text in Portuguese before. 🇧🇷

That was such a fun game! I love the concept, ive never seen someone have an idea like this before. Great work! and i love the physics on the little stick guy. A few suggestions: maybe increase the character dropped limit, it feels like its too low for how many arrows get thrown. Good work!

Thanks @delightfullymad @r3l0ad1 @lex ! Justed rated your games as well!

Yes @lex. I'm BR! Needed Google Translator help at last minute. haha 🇧🇷!

I'm actually considering bringing this game to Steam. If you want to follow along, follow my developer page on steam and get notified when the game is released:

Your idea is very creative and hilarious, and you honestly executed it quite well. The mechanic of dropping your letters to stop cursors and stickmen is very cool. The fact that your typing actually has some meaning is really cool as well. The stickmen don't really feel like threats, though. Also, your game should be called arm-sore simulator, because the amount of typing you have to do is kind of tiring. The ending blue screen could have also showed more detail, such as how many words you typed. Great game!

The idea is super creative, I only wish the pointers were more scary and important to deal with, because at some point I realised it's easier to just speed through the text instead trying to shoot them down :/

honestly, one of my favorite games here. really cool idea I even enjoyed reading the text lol, also that blue screen scared me for some reason, like I know it's just a game but I still feel uncomfortable for some reason, really well done

Amazingly original idea! I'd like to be able to hold down space as my thumb got a bit tired, but I absolutely loved the concept :D

Dude this is such a cool idea for a game, although I can't imagine how long it took you to write that entire essay. Or now that I'm thinking about it you probably just used an essay you already had or something. Regardless, awesome game, I've never seen a game like it

Hi guys! Awesome feedbacks! Thanks a lot!
I will rate all your games in a moment as well.

@slimmerburger , I wrote the begining of the text. When it says "I'm going to start creating some random texts so you can focus on the task", I used text generators like this one:
https://shortlyai.com/

It uses something that you wrote and automatically generate more text using AI :D

@cabjhegas Ah I see, that's really cool. I was thinking while I was playing that it would've taken ages to write that which wouldn't be good in a jam

Really cool idea, the only thing I would change is adding some kind of progress indicator. Because as it, you feel pointless to play since each some other lines amount you will be pushed back up, and since it's not dependent on anything - it feels kinda pointless to play after some time. Otherwise - really great concept, and flawless execution.

Fantastic and very funny! Balancing dropping letters and creating new ones was a very satisfying game loop, and the concept was really interesting. I love entries like this that get super creative with the prompt!

I didn't really enjoy the gameplay. I am simply mashing keys aimlessly. For a game that requires so much finger action, I would have liked the on-screen action to match.

I also didn't like the text because it read like it was generated by a computer. I would have preferred some more intentional humor.

Wow, that is really an innovative game and - at the beginning - a hard one too.
I really loved to play it.
It's well polished and I didn't miss a thing here.

Sometimes the simple games are the best, eh?

Really creative idea, I like it. I had fun, too!

As already mentioned, the text appears somewhat slowly, I would have preferred a higher speed.

I liked reading the texts that appeared, they were quite funny by themselves.

Impressive game, good job!

Sometimes I can be pretty skeptical about awesome looking LD gifs - that the gameplay might end up not being fun and it's all show. That's not the case here. Even though the concept didn't sound great when I started the game, I go to see what it really was over time.

This gameplay was super novel, it was a variation of Space Invaders but done in such a way that it tests many other skills, like timing and resource management. Often I would miss a cursor, and then quickly calculate if I can either make it to the next line, or burn all my letters trying to hunt it down.

And uh, of course it tests your mashing skills as well :)

Just a really great idea overall. The art isn't just slapped onto the game as theming. You did an incredible job marrying the gameplay with the theme and presentation. This game is impressive!

Very original concept and the button mashing is fun!

However the fail state makes you have to revisit the initial intro bit - could be skipped upon a retry.

Tons of fun! Just wished I didn't have to redo the whole intro bit every time, oh that and the sound effects are **way** too loud! Other than that, great game!

Fantastic idea and execution, using all the right elements that make it feel whole. The familiarity of the word editor and the humour of the stick men is top quality. Great!

Great job! This was **a very novel approach to the theme**, and very innovative gameplay. I enjoyed it. I have to appreciate the little game juice touches. Dropping a letter felt very satisfying. Also, the writing was well done! Up to a certain point, I was too slow because I kept reading what was being written, and the fact that I was not jumping at the chance to mash the keyboard shows how engrossing such a thing can be.

However, **I did feel it got a little slow at times.** Maybe I wasn't mashing hard enough, but when there are one or two stickmen, it feels like they aren't doing much. I also would have like some sort of progress indicator as to when we would reach the end. I guess it just felt too real, typing and typing with no end in sight. I guess it really is a hard work simulator.

Suffice to say, I don't think these little things took away from the game too much. It was still an enjoyable experience, and I congratulate you on a job **well done!**

This is a really cool concept. I wonder how this could be further developed. A story based game about a writer whos characters come to life in the editor to attack the text? A programmer at work who gets a virus that attacks their code? Really interesting concept here!

I love that concept, typing like crazy in a memable fashion while real text appears on screen is the best thing that happened to me today!

This has a lot of potential :) I like how there's some strategy factor, we can't just shoot randomly because it counts towards the lost letters...

Fun fact: I was about to suggest a feature, but I just went back to play again and the feature was already there, haha 😅(I felt bad when my text went past the enemies and had to type a whole new line to reach them... It turns out that *backspace actually works!* 🤦‍♂️)

It's a great concept! Well done!

The thing I could say is that I can't mash spacebar quickly enough to hit the cursor at the right time. It's a bit too difficult. It also lack a goal.

But other than that, I really liked it! It is really fun! Great work!

That's the most unique idea i've seen so far! I like the narration as well, it motivated me to continue playing to read the story. I wish I could press and hold spacebar, so keys would fall automatically, OR! Why don't use backspace instead? It seems more appropriate for deleting text.

This is a very unique interpretation of the theme executed very well. I love the casual narration via the button-mashing, and speaking of which, this is probably one of the few games I played where button-mashing feels relevant and not a method to add artificial challenge. The physics for the letters and the stickfigures were really nice, and I was impressed with how the WebGL ran well on my integrated GPU up until near the end of my run when I had about four layers of letter on the bottom of the screen. I really enjoyed this one-great job.

Really smart game. A brilliant concept that is very well executed. The graphics look good and the way the letters fall is very nice. Really funny text and gameplay. Only recommendation would be that being able to hold the spacebar to quick drop letters would be nice, but I understand it might go against the spirit of the game. Great job!

I like the idea a lot! Not sure about the realization yet, but it's definitely not the worst. And I can tell you that you managed to impress a person who's not a fan of such games, and at work, I'd rather place a bet with a tip from https://takebet.ke/betting-tips/1x2-win-draw-win and watch a sport match, but this game is worth giving a try.
