Frogmented World by spudboy

[raw]
made by spudboy for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

CoverImageLudumDare.png

A short puzzle platformer with a neat space-bending mechanic.

The original idea had more to do with the theme, but the more theme-relevant stuff got cut. Oh well! 😃🤷‍♂️

10/06/2021: Uploaded a "version 1.01" with the following changes: - Fixed robot enemies not falling into the void. - Fixed victory screen background sometimes being in front of the player. - Tweaked audio balance of various SFX.

adorable game!!!! unfortunately i think i got stuck on the second level? i pressed control, the particles popped up, but when i went to the edge of the screen it didn't teleport me to the other side and i got stuck D: super cool idea tho!

Great art style, character control is good. I like the concept for switching between the modes for traversing the levels. Puzzles were well though out too. Beautiful, thanks for the game!

you weren't kidding; it IS a neat space-bending mechanic. Your level pacing is on point, introducing new techniques gradually so the player gets acquainted with the mechanic before mixing it up again. Really well done

Cute frog! I like the world wrapping mechanic. Reminded me of old arcade games where you could wrap around to the other side. Couldn't figure out how to get past the switch in the third or fourth level. It does feel like this game was made for a different theme.

I loved this one! The art is lovely and I can tell how much time and care went into it. The core mechanic is fantastic, and the levels are very cleverly designed around it. I was a big fan of the cloud at the end, too. :) Great job!

This is quite cute! The jumping sound was a little loud for me. The level where the door is in an enclosed space was a little wonky for me, I kept getting stuck on nothing on the left side, and then falling if I moved or turned off warping. The jumping felt pretty good, and I know that's not always easy to do.

Don't worry about the theme not fitting enough, this was really clever and fun! I think the levels were really well designed to show off the mechanic, and the way you introduced it was perfect. I finished the game and I was looking forward to more but satisfied with what I played, which is perfect for a jam!

Gameplay is awesome, also i liked feeling of mario-like jump. In my opinion it does not fit the theme, but the game is really good!

Really cool idea! You've explored it quite well so far, the puzzles were satisfying. Would love to see more (and more complicated) levels, this has potential. Quite nice graphics and sound too.

Very cute game! I like the idea of having additional controls to solve the levels. Unfortunately I did not manage to open that door and got stuck.
Would be interested to see how that game would be if pushing the concept further.
Good job!

The space-bending mechanic was fun and easy to learn! The puzzles were well crafted and satisfying to solve.

Well done! I thought the game was bugged at first because I didn't understand what pressing R did. I don't know how you could better teach that though.

Once I figured it out though, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the experience. I think the SFX were a little repetitive and loud (compared to the music). The level/puzzle design was really well done though. It was straight-forward in the difficulty and learning curve and never felt too overwhelming despite the potential to do a lot.

Sometimes the theme doesn't make it into the game and the game does better for it. Well done :)

Liked the space-bending, took me a while to figure out that it also applies to enemies :)

This is such a clever puzzle platformer. I’m curious to know what you had planned that would’ve made it more on theme. In any case, I love the mechanic… well done!

@hellequinne Basically the original idea was more plot-based in regards to the theme. A character from a pixel platformer would find his video game world glitching more and more and would have to use the glitches to solve levels.

The mechanic in the game turned out to be the most fun glitch I could think of and I figured putting work into the plot elements (writing, coding a system to display text in a nice-looking way, etc.) would be too much time that I could spend making the rest of the game good. Just prioritized the part that seemed fun haha.

What a wonderful mechanic! One of the few games I've played all the way through. Really cute graphics and I love how you use the mechanic once it is introduced.

@hellequinne I realized after playing your game that your team's entry is something very much like my initial idea I described haha. Funny coincidence there.

Really loved the idea! This MUST become a full game, the graphics are awesome, the energy doors give me Commander Keen 1 vibes. Very fun to play and really nice puzzles!

Fantastic! I had this "Oooooh!" moment when I learned about mechanics in the game. And the next level with the robot, what a clever idea!

And thank you for making this. What were the more "theme-fitted" mechanics you wanted to add? Just curious :)

interesting and smart level design!

music audio and art are very cute, which suit for the game!

control in html version has a little problem, download version is complete fine. so I think it's ok :)

Very cool puzzle platformer! I like how the mechanics gradually build on themselves. I didn't understand the warping mechanic at first, until I accidentally walked into the particles, so maybe it needs a sentence or two on this page to onboard people a little better. The levels with the robots and the diagonal jump traversal are BRILLIANT! The first robot one stumped me for a while but I was so delighted when I figured it out. The froggy sprite is super cute too but the puzzle design is what really stands out about Frogmented World. Definitely worth a play!

Really excellent little puzzles here. The mechanic works really well, with a button press the camera locks and the player can wrap around the room. Definitely a lot of potential here, I can imagine a mind bending Metroidvania with this mechanic and the myriad ways it could expand with items, powerups, big maps, and so on. The pixel art and music are nice, it is a relaxing atmosphere. Nice job!

At first glance, this seems to be a simple platformer involving a frog, but upon closer look the gameplay and level design is simple yet really brain-twisting. A lot of the levels stumped me until I figured out how to use the simple glitch mechanic to my advantage, and then you had an "a-ha" moment. This is one of those games where you shouldn't judge it by its simpleness. Overall amazing job.
