Gunslinger Glitch by ugly_robot

[raw]
made by ugly_robot for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

(This game is pretty ugly and small - so fair warning lol.)

A quickdraw duel against cutting edge A.I. - can you tell which faces are human, and which are synthesized? Put your draw speed an psychological skills to the test.

You will meet gunslingers with the photos and quotes of real humans, and amongst them, traitorous androids with generated photos and quotes.

The portraits are created with a hyper-GAN and the text was generated with OpenApi's GPT-3.

Web based, play in browser - no need to download anything!

Nice one! It was too hard to find who's a human in time so I didn't make it to the top but it didn't stop me trying :) I like the westworld mood and graphics. I'll try it again for sure.

Cool idea!
There doesn't seem to be enough time to properly look at faces and read the quotes, but eventually I learned to recognize which faces are AI which then made it pretty easy :)

@barrier Wow! That's a skill in itself! There's about 100 AI faces (and about 100 human)

@ugly-robot Cleared a couple more buildings. I did shoot 2 humans though :D

If the photo includes some recognizable objects then its probably a human. The robots usually have weird abstract backgrounds and pretty faces :D

I feel like you could always tell if the quote was real or AI when it was sarcastic which is hilarious

The concept is absolutely amazing, direct 5 for innovation! It was very difficult for me to tell what is real and what not :D I don't know if you generated faces on your GPU but there's website for that: thispersondoesnotexist.com :P

In my first attempt I was shooting whoever I dont liked the picture and after passing 5-6 said "I am shooting but is there a way to know they are droids or not" then I failed and turn back to first floor hahaha Inovative and not ugly game if you ask me, good job!

@jellybean haha, right? A few of feel like intentionally sassy quotes making fun of 'deep quotes'. So funny what ML creates.

@barrier fantastic work! That is so cool you figured that background tip out - I hadn't even noticed. Probably my favorite part about this experiment is learning a few of the algorithm's endless quirks.

@furfel thanks! And yes, their model is exactly what I used ^,^

@mlkvr haha maybe your subconscious is just that good at discerning synthesized faces!

@jiri-hysek yeah the difficulty can be tough - ducking can be a good strategy to buy yourself a bit of time (sometimes)

Amazing idea for a game! Had a nice consistent style, and amazing replayability value. Really enjoyed it :+1

Pretty fun game! I lost more times than I can count, yet really enjoyed spent time.

Art is stylish and every pixel is in place. Sounds harmonize with game and do not distract.
Gameplay is simple, but engaging.

Keep up the good work!

What this taught me is that my autistic brain is awful at noticing the difference between real and AI quotes. Some AI pictures have artefacts in them, so they're really off, but outside of them, it was a 50/50 every time for me. I ended up getting to the end after seeing 37 faces, I really wanted to get to the end. Very interesting twist on the theme.

@mrbell270 thank you so much! I really loved your game, so I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed mine!

@masaru haha don't worry - its super hard for me too. Really it's a testament to how great GAN models have become, and the hard work of the researchers (and computers!) that created them. Thanks for playing!

Very creative. Like others have mentioned there are certain tells because of how the AI was trained, but it fits with the fiction. It also makes it more skill based once you learn what they are. Not enough that you're always certain, but enough to make you feel like you're smart.

Super innovative! Learning how to spot the AI better felt very compelling and satisfying. The lofi style compliments it well, and the music added a unique flavor that I enjoyed quite a bit!

@irwatts haha thanks! My music skills are pretty lacking so I was really happy to get a chance to work on them, glad it turned out alright

The ai guys generally dont have detailed background, very cool concept for a game, probably most unique game i've played so far, love the reloading animation and sound. Only drawback is it doesnt fit the theme beyond surface level backstory. Good job.

Really interesting concept! I never really got 'good' at it and ended up just getting used to recognizing which quotes were or weren't safe. Still enjoyed myself despite finding it a bit too difficult to play 'correctly'!

An interesting idea. I was often too slow to read the quotes and when I did I mostly got them wrong. Managed to get to the top guessing on just the photos.

@jakefriend @harmadillo so cool to see how different folks have different methods of detective work! Seems like everyone's got a slightly different take

Fun fact - there are also ways to discern based on their behavior with their weapon, not sure if anyone has used that - I think it's the one I rely on most when playing myself (though, of course, I'm cheating - I know all the secrets! lol)

Very impressive work!

I think you are being a little too harsh on yourself, the game is really good. It is very impressive if you've actually used AP-based quotes for this game.

I think there certain times in the game where I really have a hard time distinguishing what's fake from what's real. Which is both scary for real life, but also a little frustrating when playing, because it feels like you can't base yourself on any logical principle.

Besides that, audio/gfx/gameplay is really good and THANK YOU for including a volume control for the sfx and the bg music.

This was a really good LD entry, especially considering this is a compo on top of all things!

I was CONSISTENTLY shooting humans omg. Game seemed quite well made and the elevator mechanic was quite interesting. Other than the frustration of not really knowing how to do better at the game it was quite nice.

Damn this is really cool! A really neat idea, and really fun! Also... really hard! AI is scary good now huh.
A little unclear on the theme, but the graphics and audio work well with the idea. Well done!

This is a really cool idea for a game. I didn't really have time to read the quotes, so I just guessed based on the faces. I wish it would restart right away after you mess up, it seemed like it took a while in some cases. Great job!

I love the idea of using real AI for a project like this, fantastic well done. I will say however, I managed to get to the top floor on my second and third try (fist one was figuring out controls), by simply looking at images. AI is really fascinating to me and there is a certain framing to the way that most AI faces are generated that gives them away, but well done never the less, great idea!
