BRIMSTONE by HolyBlackCat

[raw]
made by HolyBlackCat for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

screenshot_1.png

Play as a piece of fire that destroys anything it touches!

Controls: (explained in the game too)

  • WASD / Arrows — move
  • Space / Z / Up — jump (hold to jump higher)
  • R — restart
  • M — mute music
  • Alt-Enter — toggle fullscreen

Written in C++/OpenGL, using a custom framework.

It's the second time I'm making a game entirely on Linux, without testing on Windows at all. I expected things to be trickier, but it works well so far. :)

Amazing game, finished it in 15 mins. I would like a second mechanic to keep things interesting but this game is still amazing.

Great game! It looks and feels super polished and there are even quite a lot of levels. Excellent job!

Amazing, as soon as I loaded it up I was like aw damn, this is gonna be legit. Awesome pixel art, and the flame burning down the blocks looks incredible. Well done!

awesome game! the tile burning mechanic is really neat, and a lot of the level design was really clever. I loved the art overall, but sometimes I found it hard to see either the spikes or the things I was supposed to light because they are so visually similar to everything else. A very minor issue though :) Linux build works fine btw, thanks for making one!

Great all around. Only nitpicj is that spikes are very hard to see behind fire. so you have to just remember they are there.

Very cool! Really love the decay of the blocks that catch fire, and the physics elements when the platforms give way.

I got stuck on this one :disappointed_relieved:

@johnnysix There's a torch behind the middle spike. :) You can reach it before everything burns down and the spike falls on top of it.

I made it to 7  great stuff! I don't have the reflexes I once did haha.

This is adorable! Definitely fits the theme of unstable with falling platforms and spreading fire. The art is great and the puzzle design was great too! The only problem I had is that I didn't realize it was a variable jump at first so I was stuck on the first level for a little bit *face palm*. I would seriously love to see this expanded in a full game. Great job!

@pixelydian In my defence, the first level has "hold to jump higher" hint, which isn't supposed to go away until you perform a max size jump. :P

Though apparently there is a bug that makes the message disappear if you regrab the jump button while falling.

I'll add it to the game description, just in case.

Sooooo good! I would have been impressed if this was made in an engine like Unity or GameMaker, but the fact that it's also in a custom framework is amazing. The art is lovely, the ambient backing track sets the mood too. And of course, the burn mechanic really adds time pressure and some puzzle gameplay which was a lot of fun. Only feedback I would have is that the particle effects can kind of get in the way of seeing where spikes are, but other than that it was such a good entry and I really hope you get a good overall rating. Congrats

(Also I played on Windows which worked perfectly)

This is great! The graphics are top notch, very expressive and satisfying to look at. The gameplay is also good, I like the puzzles. One gripe I have is that the effect for burning up tiles, while cool looking, sometimes obscured the level too much for me. Making the embers not move up as much would solve that I think. Unfortunately the sound didn't work for me, I tried restarting but got nothing :( This is definitely one of the better games I've played this jam, congratulations on a job well done!

@jakobthequizguy Thanks! c: The lack of sound effects is weird, they should be there, along with some simple ambient.

This is a great game. Just, great! Good puzzles, good sound, good visuals, not too hard, but hard enough to have to retry many levels. We loved the fire graphics and the take on the theme. :)

Gorgeous graphics, and the sounds are fantastic, also love the subtle soundtrack going on in the background.
You really nailed the level design, it was hard, but beatable and the difficulty progressed real smooth!

Overall pretty great, had a blast lighting torches and trying to not succumb to the mayhem i caused by simply being

Absolutely loved it ! I was a bit scared that the fire decay was just a gimmick at first, but you managed to turn it into a very interesting puzzle mechanic ! The graphics are stunning, its difficulty is just right, I had fun overall !

The level design on this is incredible! The art and particle effects are wonderful too and the game feels very polished. The fire spreading mechanic is amazing, especially because it's well integrated in the gameplay!

My only complaint is for the spikes: they are a little hard to see and they kill you even when they're halfway burnt, despite visually looking like they're safe.

Superb entry overall, bravo!

Very solid. These levels were very dense, in that some introduced multiple ideas simultaneously. I think if the levels were spaced out a bit more conceptually and simplified further, it may be easier for folks to progress.

Very very nice graphics, I loved all the particle effects, the background is also really pretty. Nice relaxing music. Well made overall! One thing I think could have improved the game would be adding "coyote time" -- allowing the player to jump for a short while after walking of a platform. Nice job!

This was my favorite entry so far! Great work! The style was awesome, the gameplay was tight and interesting. I would buy this as a full release. Add a few more mechanics, some better sound design, maybe a level editor and drop it for $4.99 on steam and switch! Great work.

I reeeeallly liked this game! Played it till the very end, reminded me of Nitrome games in absolutely good way! Level design + graphics + sounds made reeeallly goood job. I've only added some music, but that it doesn't have any - it's still awesome)
