Welcome to Bubble Bud Island!

The Deities of Chill Chilly and Chillie summoned you as a Bubble Bud to compete in their name in a... Beach Yukigassen Game?! Where instead of Snowballs, you throw dimension-shifting water baloons?! Whahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Controls:

- wasd: movement - space: jump/ respawn (if in ghostworld and picked up a soul) - shift: run - hold rmb: target - lmb: shoot - hold tab: birdeye-view (Camera) pic4.png

Chilly vs. Chillie

Represent Chilly the Ancient Snowman against the team assembled by the red Behemoth Chillie. The rules are simple: Exterminate all 9 lives of the opponent or Steal their Surfboard and bring it to your own to win! Be careful though, as it is rumored these surfboards summon a dangerous crashing wave on even the slightest touch!

It's not all sunshine and rainbows...

Once hit, your soul is transported immediately to the Spirit Realm - it's what the Chill Deities play over in the first place. Snatch back your soul to be granted passage back to the living. Choose your respawn location wisely, as you'll bring a exoplasm-waterballon pickup back with you.

You are not prepared...

The jam version of the game consists of shooting, pickups and destructible terrain and the basic controllers of the Player, Ghost and Surfing-Bud. There is no enemy and no winning condition, which makes this more of a toy.

UPDATE: The new Extra version does have Multiplayer Gameplay! Get some friends together and play! O: ...that is as long as the server's not bugging out.

The Future...

The intention was to focus on multiplayer via Websocket Server, yet the implementation did rob much more time than anticipated. I do intend to release the full game soon. It's hard to predict how much time I can spend on the game from now on, but if I get to it, I may convert the entry to Extra.

UPDATE: I did decide on Extra and uploaded the Multiplayer version an hour before Rating ended. Writing server logic did take even longer than "one more day", which is why I kind of couldn't celebrate Ludum Dare as I would've liked. But at least my game is playable now n_n!

Inspiration

I knew I wanted to make a Yukigassen (Snowball Fight Sports) videogame conversion even before the jam began. The rules as I understood them sound fairly videogame-like already. Concessions I had to make due to it being a video game were regarding the number of people competing against each other. Usually it's seven players on each team, which I reduced to 3 per team for more visual clarity and strategic play. Other changes were made to make the game more engaging (dropping soul/ balloon on changing phases, for example). I also intended the game to be multiplayer only, due to the very sports-like character.

Firsts:

  • Working on a shooter
  • Rigging and animating in Blender
  • Working on controllers in 3D
  • Websocket-logic in a game
  • Having more time due to just generating my music instead of trying and failing to compose myself :D

Tech used:

  • Godot 4.2
  • Blender
  • Inkscape & Gimp
  • Node.js
  • Suno.com (AI Music Generation)

I love seeing your games being more and more ambitious. From what I read in your initial version of this page, it sounds like you spent a ton of time implementing the websocket multiplayer stuff that ultimately was left unimplemented. I've yet to try and make a multiplayer game myself, so I will absolutely applaud you for taking that on during a game jam. In addition to that, the destructible terrain, 3d models with animations, and really cool skyboxes show that there was genuine effort spent making this. There's a lot of attention to detail!

You have the start of a fun party game here. Keep it up!

Here's my recorded session for more feedback.

I enjoy the aesthetics in this one. And the music fits perfectly to the "snowball party on the beach" I think you have a start of a very nice atmosphere here!

It's hard to say anything much about the game, as it's really not anything it will be at the moment. There is a lot here, and you made impressive progress in such a short time, but no game yet  The inspiration for this whole endeavor sounds quite interesting (never heard of it before), and seems like a base for a solid multiplayer experience.

I went surfing on a ghostboard

A very interesting game concept. You have good possibilities if you continue to work on this game. The music is good, the graphics are very well done (the highlight of your project), and the controls seem to work well. I’m curious to know more about the future of this idea!

Good job!

Thank you all so much for giving my game a chance u_u
Rest assured, I played and rated all of yours as well even if I didn't give timely feedback. I took this last week only to make my game actually playable, something I assumed would only take "one more day" haha. Yeah.

but that being said...

### Huge Update! Multiplayer Game can finally multiplayer!

Yes, you've heard that right. You can now play against each other and actually experience real gameplay! Of course due to my bad timing, nobody at the moment plays the game, which is why you should definitely get at least one friend involved :D

There are still shortcuts I had to take to remain within the Extra timeframe such as quitting the game after one game, the tutorial island being only used for the player to get to the lobby, and instead of having good looking Combat UI resolving to "tutorial-texts" trying to guide players. I'm nowhere near happy with even this current version, which is why I plan to bring the game to a somewhat stable build as soon as possible.

Hopefully I'll have some more time come October!
