Infernup's Ablazummon by Colisan

[raw]
made by Colisan for Ludum Dare 55 (COMPO)

preview.gif

You play as Ablazummon, a hellish demon stuck in Infernup's famous ever-descending human-Summoning™ lava pit. No hope of getting out of there... but while you're at it, you might as well sacrifice a few extra humans, until... the inevitable. :fire::smiling_imp::fire:

Armed with your summonner's staff, dodge lava and manipulate the Summoning™ Pentacle to absorb humans, and you'll be able to re-summon them later: as platform to move around, or on sacrificial altars to gather score :fire:

Infernup's Ablazummon is a fun arcade-platformer, where you play and replay short games to chase the leaderboard. Heartbeat goes up, palms go sweaty : The game is exigent, it's expected that you'll die a lot, that's how you learn! Each game length is calibrated to last no more than a few minutes.

Instructions

Controls

Move using WASD (rebindable!)

Orient the Summoning™ Pentacle using mouse cursor

Summon humans using mouse click

In menus: Space as "Ok", Esc as "Back" (rebindable!)

You can score points!

score_crop.gif

Summoning™ the humans you've fetch in your pentacle on an altar will give you points.

The more a specific altar has been used before, the more points you'll get! :fire:

You can double jump!

summon_crop.gif

Well, no, not really.

However, Summoning™ the humans mid-air act as temporary platforms. You can even fetch them back in your portal once they start falling again! :fire:

You can build!

build_crop.gif

Summoning™ the humans you've fetched next to a platform will create new platforms.

Unlike humans summoned mid-air, platform ones can't be re-fetched later! :fire:

You can die in lava

No .gif needed for this one, you'll see!

About the game

Made in 48h for the 55th Ludum Dare gamejam, "compo" category.

Tool used : crappy ol' Clickteam Fusion 2.5+, Aseprite, BFXR, Bosca Ceoil, ShareX, & some more.

Very proud of how the game ended up. I hope you'll enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed wasting time doing so instead of working on it during the 48h!:sparkles:

POST-JAM changelog

  • UI mouse controls
  • Summoning™ range subtle highlight
  • Allow placing the Pentacle over the character
  • Hold mouse to auto-click altars
  • QoL platforming stuff (jump input buffering, edge deflection, ledge grab, coyote time)
  • Allow a-bit-higher jump for easier summon above altars
  • Less RNG human positions (~3x bag, so if a lot fall on the left you can expect more on the right soon)
  • Fixed glitching in generating platforms bug
  • 8 click/sec max limit on the altars
  • Balanced sounds volume (sliders still WIP)
  • Changed fullscreen fill color to black
  • and more :fire: ... (I forgot)

:point_right: TL;DR:

Hover to fetch human, click to summon, summon on altar to score :fire:

This game is good! I love the theme and all the visuals are great. The music fits perfectly.
It took me a couple tries to realize that my score is how many humans I get on the platform - and shortly after had the realization that I spent all my humans on score and couldn't escape the lava. That risk/reward incentive is great.

I think an indicator of how far you can place/collect humans would go far, and maybe not being able to accidentally collect the ones you've placed.

Loved it though, nice job!

Yea, this is a great entry. Graphics and sound are top notch. I found the gameplay a little hard. I didn't get very high on the leaderboard. I enjoyed it a lot though. Great stuff :8ball:

Heavy metal! Or, I guess, molten rock and burning humans. Incredible entry, so much fun. Thanks for sharing! <3

Love tower sinking games like this, and the twist mechanic of the summoning dudes is awesome!

Really fun and addictive game! Managed to make it to top 8 as of now. May grind it some more later.![highscoreinfenral.png](///raw/564/b2/z/63a60.png)

@sariiger you're actually top 1 of "players excluding my viewers during the dev stream", well played! My own score is not that far up 👀💦

@colisan hearing that motivated me to grind the game a little more, and I managed to get it! 600 is still really far away though.

very cool idea! sometimes absorbing / summoning feels imprecise due to the grid snapping. I'm also unsure if I like the current way the scoring is done - I think it favors good starting positions which are random. It might be cool if it gave increasing points if a sacrifice is made higher on the screen. But yeah, its a pretty well polished game, especially for compo. I also like the synergies between falling humans, absorbing and sacrificing. Well done!

Thanks for stopping by at my stream, sorry for playing the game just for a moment.

I would appreciate an ingame tutorial teaching me the mechanics.

It looks clever, the people platforms look like a great idea :)

Really awesome game with a lot of love put into it! I loved the different animations for the humans falling! I had a small issue where there was a constellation of platforms plus altars that made it basically impossible for me to get to the next level without having like 20 corpses at the ready. I would have liked to maybe also be rewarded a little bit for height gained instead of just through the alters? The corpses linking together was absolutely sick I loved it!

Really well made game. Took me a second to understand the mechanics, but when it clicked it was a lot of fun. Pretty difficult too! Appreciate that you added keybind options and a high score list!

Would be nice to have mouse/keys as alternative menu controls. Just have them all work, I think.
I really like the subtle heat effect.
Scoreboard is neat, I was surprised. You should be able to opt out, though.
Animations are very cute, and I like the buildable human graphics.
It might be good to have a max number of humans, so you're forced to use them as you go.
I would like to be able to walk through the altars.
Very fun once you get the hang of it!

Found this game through the Tobugis stream. It looks pretty fun and cute but for some reason i got all the worst levels (i couldn't reach some lvls because of the altar) and humans that were falling from sky didn't wont to jump into my pocket :') But it's so impressive that you did it on your own, amazing job

I've had an issue with the game not accepting my username anymore, it said the name was already taken. So unfortunately I'm taking up 2 space on the leaderboard now. I don't know if you can manually delete my lower score.
Also, I'm coming for Nasth.

@sariiger The usernames are claimed by IP, yours must have changed  Do as much duplicata as you need, I'll keep the leaderboard clean as it goes =)

Congrats on the 600+, you're on fire! :fire: I'll tryhard a bit today I think :eyes:

Very nice game with an intresting idea, the fact that you did this in a compo is remarkable! the controls are weird at first, but once you get used to feel natural!

Just wow! I'm kind of worried I found myself a new addiction :D All, game mechanics, art style, controls and music are super well polished. The only thing that feels a bit off is having the range limit on marker to gather humans. It is probably necessary for game balance, but... maybe if there was an outline of the area in which player can move it? But it might also look ugly (make the screen too busy), so not sure about that. Amazing game! 10/10!

I made improvements over a short amount of time, and garnered myself a whopping 28. Heck yess. I love how the humans stack onto each other, I think it's funny. XD

EDIT: Post jam, I have made it TOP SCORE.

I gave the post-jam update a try and your improvements on it really are top notch! The overall feeling is being greatly magnified by the ability to hover the summoning portal over the character and by the jump boost on altars (which made me die so much in the previous version).
Keep up the good work :muscle:

In case anyone needs inspiration to grind the leaderboards, here are my PB runs

I don't know where to notify that to you guys, but are you aware that @Nestral is training on the jam version ([leaderboard here](https://loveteit.fr/lib/leaderboard.html?game=6)), and @Markais is ~~training~~ killing it on the post-jam one ([leaderboard here](https://loveteit.fr/lib/leaderboard.html?game=7))?

(the post-jam one is __definitely__ more balanced for scoring)

Very good game! It becomes addictive when you get the gist of it.

To me it felt polished and complete. Pixelart was cute and macabre at the same time and the idea of piling humans was brilliant. The pounding drums and the ever rising lava kept the pressure on all the time. Score list motivated me to try to beat at least the lowest scores.

It was also easy to tell what to do after eyeing through the ludum page.

Great job, I have nothing bad to say about this game

\>170 is my peak for now :P Really good game once I figured out I need to press W instead of spacebar to jump. (I'm not a read-description-first person.) It captures the feeling of having to place bridges very carefully in Nether, Minecraft sometimes. Procedural generations is also not your friend but it doesn't really undermine the overall fun I get.
