Time for Pie! by isayneigh

[raw]
made by isayneigh for Ludum Dare 55 (JAM)

Time for Pie is our entry for the theme of summoning for LD55! The idea is to "summon" a recipe by "summoning" ingredients. Life got in the way with this game jam and we couldn't complete as much as we wanted, but we're happy with the outcome! We think it's well suited as the type of game that sells itself on aesthetic rather than unique and original gameplay. See below for restrictions and a play guide.

Restrictions

  • Time constraints required we make concessions, as such there are some things required to fully enjoy the game. First, the game is outfitted for a 1920x1080 screen. We chose to forgo optimizing for all screen sizes and catered to the most common.
  • Second, the controls are specialized for the xbox controller. TECHNICALLY, it would work for any gamepad, but the icons used are for an xbox controller and using anything different may create a bit of cognitive dissonance.
  • Some intricacies of the game were left out of the game itself to save time (instructions, end conditions, etc), so we've opted to include that in the How-to-play below.
  • This has only been verified to work on Windows. The HTML5 version is too slow, presumably because it needs to map the xbox controller to the browser. A *.zip file has been included for Mac, but it is untested. All of this is available on itch.io and here on the listing.

How-To-Play

  • Complete the button combos beside each ingredient to add the ingredient to your recipe! Complete a full pie to achieve bonus points.
    • Ingredients: 10 points
    • Recipe: 120 points
  • Each time you complete a button combo for an ingredient it will change.

Nice to Haves

  • Too many to list. Missing audio queues, animations, UX, and bonus items (such as whipped cream and ice cream).
    • Okay, not too many to list.

Overall, we're happy with the result. We can see it as something that could be a fun puzzle game for friends to compete with each other on. We hope you enjoy it.

It turns out it requires controller play, which took me some time to find my controller.

I was so excited for a cooking game I blew off the dust from my controller which thankfully is an Xbox one!

It worked, though I felt a bit confused about controls. It doesn't really say which button I have to press on d-pad, for example. Just the whole d-pad. *UPD: I noticed one direction is slightly more gray than others. It helped. But for the future I suggest making it more obvious, maybe highlighting in colour?
Also, I found it peculiar that main menu doesn't seem to respond to any controller input, and there I have to click with a mouse ^^'

On my third try, I managed to make 1 pie but it disappeared so quickly I didn't have time to screenshot :')

Actually, I found the game very fun. I am very biased because I love baking, but the fact the I had to challenge myself a bit, click the combinations fast (especially when I am used to nintendo switch layout now and not xbox one!) - that was really fun! Thank you for the game <3

@kanity thanks for the feedback! I could've predicted every issue you mentioned. They were all decisions we had to make to work on other aspects . I agree the D-pad icons weren't the best, and likewise having to actually click on the "Click to Play" button wasn't obvious. We appreciate your tenacity and willingness to try it multiple times!

@isayneigh no, I figured I have to click as it says "click", just pointing out it's peculiar to have mouse control in controller game :) I think another issue I forgot to mention is when time ran out first few times, game just tells me to quit and closes the app entirely :') So I have to boot it up again for a new try ^^' Hopefully you continue working on it ^^

Congrats on completing an entry!

I enjoyed my time playing your game, and reminded me all the time I've spent on Cook, Serve, Delicious ^^. I achieved to summon a pie on second try, and that's all I needed!

I agree with the feedback about dpad and clicking , and I'll add the loud audio level even though it's very common on jam entries ^^

I hope you enjoyed your time making it, you did good!

A simple yet thrilling game, full of tension. It would be even better if the directional keys were labeled more clearly.
