Farmer Survivor by LDJam user 388487

[raw]
made by LDJam user 388487 for Ludum Dare 55 (COMPO)

Thanks for checking out my first game ever! It’s a clone of vampire survivors, where you summon animals instead of using weapons to fight off monsters.

Made in Godot, Strudel (for music generation) and Procreate!

Web Version available on itch.io (down in the links), didn't work here because of SharedArrayBuffer...

Controls: movement with WASD, Mouse Click to pick upgrade
You have a shovel, that attacks enemies once in a while.

You have three animals to choose from: 1. Sheep shoots in all directions 2. Chicken lays bombeggs 3. Cow deals contact damage to enemies

Your final score is XP that you picked up during the game

Known bugs: 1. If you get level up when standing on summoning circle. It will lock infinitely in «full» state, and you won’t be able to use it anymore 2. To pick and upgrade you have to click on the card background (not on the icon or text on top) 3. MacOS Gatekeeper might dislike the game for not being signed 4. Same with Windows, also missing icon and proper exe details

My completely abandoned twitter, where I'll try to post updates about my gamedev journey: @pupirkaa_

Changelog:

15/04 11:06 UTC:

  • Fixed summoning circle breaking, if you level up on top of it
  • Fixed unable to pick upgrade when clicking on upgrade icon

I enjoyed the game. In particular the art was very pretty. It was hard to tell that my shovel was doing damage. I could only figure out how to spawn the cow. When I walked in the circle a cow came, I wonder how to get the chicken.

@mrVentures Thank you for playing! Circles all work the same - when you stay in the circle for 3 seconds, an animal appears and you lost half a heart. Did progress bar appear in chicken summoning circle?

I was eventually consumed by my own animals and pushed off the screen. 10/10, would farm here again. High score: 465

Wow I can't wait to show your lovely art to my kids! It took me a bit to realize I need to stand in the circles to summon an animal, after I learned that the difficulty plummeted by quite a bit. It would be great if I could sell my animals or combine them to mutate them to stronger forms.

My biggest gripe with your game is that its too zoomed in, I would like to better view my surroundings.

I think sometimes a completed progress bar gets stuck and doesnt visually update anymore. The circle then still spawns new animals but there's just a completed progress bar on top of it.

So this is your very first game? You did a great job!

The graphics is cute.
The view is too near the player (web version).
There is a lack of feedback and sound when monsters dies, take damage etc....
It's **again** a game like vampire survivor's.
i didn't know the cow can eat monsters, i thinked it was vegetarian.
This is a good start.

I'm a sucker for vampire survivors-likes, and this one is pretty cool.

I'm not sure why I would summon multiple animal instead of upgrading a single kind. Because of the low amount of upgrades, I can upgrade f.ex. chicken almost every level. There' might be a reason I'm not seeing, but I do fine without it.

On the theme: I like that you picked something other than the default warlock, but then the farmer uses summon circles anyways? Feels a bit off? The sacrifice health mechanic was cool, but again it doesn't really fit the farming theme? A warlock might have made more sense here

This post ended up a bit negative, but I think this game is really cool, and the art looks great

@ooboob Thank you so much for your feedback! I've chosen "cozy farming" style cause I wanted to rethink it in another genre. I really like Patch Quest game as an example - it's really cute game this awesome roguelike gameplay

@pupirka I really like the theme, and it looks great, but sacrificing health to summon animals, does not seem like something a farmer would do. Does that make sense?

Not gonna lie, this is pretty impressive for the first game (itch io game description says so).

Make animals poop and let the player clean this mess up and you get a Cult of the Lamb lol.

I think the game difficulty is more of less static, this is why I felt overpowered after a few upgrade levels. The main danger is your own army because in the end I was surrounded to submission.

I recorded myself playing the game if you're into that weird kind of stuff (such as watching other people play your games):

@quasilyte Thank you so much for feedback! I totally agree with all your comments, game is truly unpolished now. I have got your video in Youtube recommendations few minutes ago and was really surprised :smile_cat:

Ah, I forgot to say that chicken are quite OP.
It took me a while to notice the way sheep are attacking.
Overall, it was good to know that every unit has its own mechanics.
I haven't read the game description but I was able to get this info while playing the game itself.

It's an interesting take on the vampire survivors style genre, the art is really cute too!
It's good, and I think with a bit more polish it could be great! Things like more animations, sfx, particle effects, feedback when taking damage etc.
Overall really nice work, especially considering it's your first jam!

Game is super cute!
I'm not sure if it's a bug or a feature but when I press space I get XP for free.
Eventually I got stuck in the corner of the screen trampled by my lovely :cow:.

This is one of my favorite games of the jam!!
Love the mood, the artworks are super cute and very coherent, spent a lot of time playing it and to me the chicken are the most powerful pets haha
Really good job!

Fun game, I like the way health is used as a resource to buy more animals. Nice learning curve at the beginning.

I got stuck several times in my herd, at one point I got pinned to a corner and couldn't progress anymore.

Very fun and cute.

Something I haven't noticed anyone else say yet, I think you may have used a positional audio to play the BGM, if you used streamaudio2d, try just stream audio

That was really fun! I found it difficult at first to tell when damage was being done. I'm still not sure if the issue is the size of the hitboxes or the damage that my animals do. Once you get a bunch of animals this doesn't matter as much and the game really falls into it's groove. It's surprisingly relaxing for the genre which really makes for a good mood. Great job!

Extremely impressive for a first game ever! This was obviously a lot of work too. Only thing I really disliked was getting blocked by my own summons. You're a great game dev, keep learning!

good job for your first game jam! I got stuck in the corner with all my animals but they're so cute and protect me anyway haha. I think the gameplay could be a bit more interesting if the pathfinding for the enemies and animals were a bit more varied. The art style was so cute, love the chill vibes.

The art style is great! I love the colors and the characters are very cute. Good job on making them all stand out in their own way.

The game was a lot of fun. I haven't played vampire survivor much but I really enjoyed your variation on it, the summoning mechanic made for interesting strategic choices on when to risk your hearts to get more minions.

Cute little game! I love the art style, although I'd appreciate more visual feedback (when someone is hit) and some sound effects. Also, I ended up stuck at the end of the screen surrounded by my animals. I couldn't move but I felt safe :) I believe I could get a great score if I let it run for a couple of days :D Anyway, it was a very enjoyable experience!

Wow, super cute and consistent art! Played two rounds, as the second time the game very easy and got too many animal friends summoned. After awhile, my friends turned against me and pushed me to the wall so that I was not able to move

I see a lot of potential in this survivors style game, keep it up!

This game is so stinkin' cute, it's melting my heart into a puddle of goo. The puzzles are crafted with such clever whimsy, my girlfriend and I are head over heels for your game. It's like you sprinkled confetti on our fun factor!![C7C88E47507CAE69D61DEBDEFAFF1368.gif](///raw/367/d5/z/63fcc.gif)

Hi, it was really cute! Like many others, I soon got overpowered and then stuck, surrounded by my allies, unable to die because no enemy could get close xD the best part are the cute graphics!

I had a very similar idea of summoning chickens and selling their eggs while at the same time trying to fight enemies :D

It's very cute and art looks awesome!

As for me there could be more sound effects to indicate what's happening better.
