About

Tournament of Summoners is a turn-based card game that progressively gets harder with each stage where you fight other summoners. At the beginning of each stage you're able to purchase new cards for your deck which you then play to fight your opponent.

Lore

As your consciousness fades away your mind is being put to a test of endurance to fear. You are one of many contestants of the Tournament of Summoners. As a summoner you're able to control the power of fears and curse your enemy with said fears thus damaging his psyche and securing your place at the tournament. But be careful since you're not immune to the curses yourself. Will you be able to withstand many different fears that might damage your mental possibly for ever?

Development

  • @VladImperator - engine / game coding
  • @tuh - graphical assets / sound effects and music

We both are very passionate about the game and poured our hearts into it. Even though many features had to be cut out from the game since we were running out of time, we still are very proud of the final outcome. This is our first ludum dare game and we hope to make more. The game was developed on my(@VladImperator) own game engine written in C#.

Guide

Card

ScreenT1.png - If the card is not inverted the card's power is how much damage it's gonna deal - If the card is inverted the card's power is how much it's gonna heal you - Card's usage cost is how much energy it will cost you to play the card - Pay attention to the card's kind so you can chain it with other cards

Energy

ScreenT2.png - Energy acts as both health and well energy to play your cards

Stage

ScreenT3.png - You advance to next stage after you beat your opponent - There are 3 different phases: - > Shop (orange background) - where you buy new cards - > Play (purple background) - where you select cards for the fight phase - > Fight (green background) - where all the cards play out

Fight

  • After all the cards play out and you and your opponent are still standing the game goes into play phase again and you get 1 random card that you played back
  • When you defeat your opponent you get all the cards played this duel back
  • When you lose the battle you get reset to stage 1

Controls

  • Left and right arrow keys - select card
  • Up arrow key - buy card / pick card during play phase
  • Down arrow key - invert card during play phase
  • Spacebar - exit the shop / confirm a hand during play phase

System requirements

  • Vulkan 1.3 capable graphics card
  • Windows x64

Disclaimer

On some systems graphical inconsistencies might appear (slightly brighter image and wonky background).

Game's executable file is Summoner.exe

Update

I had to update the game since there were two minor bugs: - Inverting and picking a card at the same time during play phase would crash the game - Small oversight in the code caused one of the cards to not appear in the shop

A wonderful card game with fairly simple rules. I regret that there aren't more cards.

Nicely creepy art style :) It took me a bit to understand how the cards really worked, but I probably was just overthinking it. Made it until stage 14 during first try, before I stopped. By that time the reportet FPS went down, from an average of 1300 to 400 ;)
Maybe it would be a nice feature when the cards your opponent plays would also interact with yours. Like when the hand of God might Backfire, because the opponent also played one, destroying your set of two.

@archaeognathus I'm glad you enjoyed the game. As for the opponent's cards interacting with yours, we had many ideas for the cards and it was one of them but the time didn't allow us to add all of our ideas. One of the things we had to scrap would be the items which you could buy just like the cards which would alter the cards' effects. Fps go down because the game is really unoptimized, for example when a card disappears it doesn't actually disappear but just turns invisible. I didn't put much effort into fixing the issue since it's not really that important especially for a jam game. Thank you for playing our game!

Could not run the game on my computer (Win11 x64). After clicking on the the Summoner.exe a window open with a white screen and then closed after a couple of seconds. No Error message.

@martenj I'm very sorry for that and if you're still interested in playing our game I'll do my best to help you. If you download [this](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KF-XArTttiwOL6VLOvCy0wAOMjc_C-tT/view?usp=sharing) and replace it in the game files, the game will start saving logs in Logs folder. If you could send me the log I might be able to help you.

Other reviewers like "a bit hard to understand at first" and I'm over here staring trying to click on things for a solid 2 min before I realized I'm supposed to use a keyboard :crying_cat_face:

@kristinamay Yeah, a simple tutorial would've probably been a good idea. We're sorry

ah I crashed on a tie I think, but the animations of the card expaning and flipping really created a nice atmosphere, well done :)

Cool art, especially love the background. I'm a little confused on how the combat works though, and responsiveness of buttons was slow. Otherwise a cool concept though
